Anton Valukas is the court approved bankruptcy examiner who prepared the 2200 page Lehman Report on the unwinding of Lehman. Valukas showed that Lehman head Fuld was fully knowledgeable of the accounting used to cover up the bank's decline.The report also shows that the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the SEC had knowledge of the same facts but shrugged their shoulders and looked the other way.

The US spends astonishingly only $500 per toddler, about 4% of what advanced countries in Europe spend.The Biden plan is to change that. As jobs grow even with repeated increases in interest rates in 2023, inflation slows to 2.6%, unemployment rate at 3.7%, consumer sentiment is up 29% in 2 months in a UMich survey highest since 1991.US jobs growth of 353,000 in January 2024 the best in a year, twice what experts had predicted. The December figures were also revised upward by the Labor Department from 216,000 to 333,000. Unemployment rate held steady at 3.7%. Wages increased by 4.5%. Job gains in 2023 were mostly in government, healthcare, hotels and restaurants. In January growth was healthy across all private sector industries. The Fed's preferred inflation rate guage was 2.6% in December. Even with repeated increases in the interest rate by the Fed, growth is strong. Much of it could be attributed to the strong investment in infrastructure, and in manufacturing, US technologies by the Biden administration with help of bipartisan support in Congress.

Bush was paid $1.3 million annually for his work at Lehman, and after Lehman was acquired by Barclay's bank $2 million annually. Bush worked under Steve Lessing, a key fund raiser for his brother George W. Bush, at Lehman and Barclay's. The work involved talking to clients including healthcare companies Cigna, insurance company MetLife, and other clients. About half of Bush's time was spent working at the bank as an adviser, not an employee. The only other candidate for president in 2016 who worked at Wall Street, Ohio governor John Kasich, also worked at Lehman from 2001 to 2008. Kasich was reportedly paid $182,000 and a bonus of $432,000 as managing director at the investment banking division, less than Jeb Bush but working full time. When Jeb Bush graduated from the University of Texas in 1974 he worked at Texas Commerce Bank, founded by James Baker III, a close friend of his father George H.W. Bush. He worked there from 1974 to 1980, in the international division looking at country risks in Latin America. Both Jeb Bush and Kasich face the prospect of facing difficult questions about their time at Lehman Brothers, because of the 2008 financial crisis and aggressive leveraged expansion at the bank leading to its collapse....

Reviews of "End of Wall Street" by Roger Lowenstein and the "Big Short" by Michael Lewis show not only how the traders like Michael Burry and Steve Eisman built up credit default swap positions and bet that the housing market with subprime lending would collapse. The Big Short says Gross is a portrait of misfits, which is how the traders are shown in their personal lives. For Eisman a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and the Harvard Law School, his own wife is quoted as saying, that even on Wall Street he was seen as "rude, obnoxious and aggressive." About lives of the men of finance, Lowenstein describes one incident in which Vikram Pandit is spotted at lunch in "Le Bernardin," a top rated restaurant in New York. Pandit sees nothing by the glass and orders a $350 bottle so he could savor a glass of wine worth drinking. All this for doing what Loyd Blankfein described as "doing God's work."

With the rushed approach adopted by the Trump administration not enough consideration was given to winning support in the House from 25 conservatives in the Freedom Caucus. Without their support the bill cannot be passed in the House of Representatives. The fight also includes one over what are essential health benefits including whether  maternity care would be included. As a result some moderate Republicans are also expressing opposition on the grounds that less people will be covered and fewer benefits will be provided under the Republican House plan called AHCA. President Trump has not involved himself in the details, and the bill comes very early in the first 100 days, leading to the perception that health care has become a partisan conflict without really grappling with the problems of high cost of health care and creating a solution that all can support. Democrats are seen as having made the same error early in Obama administration's first term. President Trump sees this as a much needed win with a drop in his approval ratings, making this even less of an effort to come out with a good plan.  ...

The Obama administration announced a policy of increasing the number of refugees accepted in fiscal 2017 to 110,000. This will be an increase from 85,000 in 2016, and 70,000 in the prior 3 years. Secretary of State Kerry says the target is consistent  with the idea that all countries need to do more, and if we could do more we would. After 3 years of cautious policy president Obama now follows Chancellor Merkel's lead.

Difficulties in New York Times reporting on prime minister Manmohan Singh, BJP opposition leader Narendra Modi, and on Indian politics and government. The misleading nature of an analogy to black people in the U.S. for Muslims in India, Muslims in British India. Or Muslims in South Asia going back to the 12th century with the long history and culture of Muslims in the region linking up with Muslim civilization in Iran, highly developed with their own languages and dominant in the region during different historical periods. Yet also in decline during some periods such as the British period because of rapid advances in science and technology.

The Congressional Budget Conference committee meetings offer an alternative to the distrust and failure in negotiations between the White House and the House Republicans. Efforts are underway to make the process of negotiating an agreement work in this Budget Committee chaired by Paul Ryan and Pat Murray. Republicans push for spending cuts as the debt ceiling reaches $16.7 trillion in 2013 compared to $4.9 trillion in 1993, an increase that is triple the increase in the prior 5 decades. Democrats say the cuts would hurt economic growth and the unemployed.
