2013 will be a crucial year for Windows mobile software, according to IDC. IDC analysts say developer support is critical and mobile platforms that fall below 50% in support from developers 'very interested' in developing apps for them are likely to see a gradual demise. IDC's quarterly surveys of more than 4800 mobile apps developers shows Windows 8 tablets having such support from 33% of developers and Windows phone 7 software having 21% support. Research in Motion (RIM) has a mere 9% support for Blackberry phones and 8% for the PlayBook tablet. The figures for Apple iPhone are 85% and iPad are 83%, followed by Android phone 76%, Android tablet 66%.

His departure after 23 years at Microsoft comes after hardware companies working with Microsoft and other teams inside Microsoft described difficulties in working with Sinofsky. Microsoft CEO Brad Smith is taking a different approach with regulators than tech rivals Apple and Google. In this report by WSJ he says that tech is now in the same situation that the financial companies were after the financial misdeeds of 2008 which caused a global financial crisis. Banks had to adapt to the regulation that followed. Tech says Brad Smith will have to do the same after missteps of its own. Better for Microsoft to work proactively with regulators than to stall regulation is Smith'e view.
To do this Smith brings 30 years of experience working with Microsoft and seven as president. During this time he had extensive interface with regulators and government, so that he brings more experience in this field than his peers at Google or Apple.
