The huge stimulus spending in these areas creates new opportunities that companies are pursuing aggressively. One Dept of Energy project in Washington state using IBM technology showed that peak loads on utility grids can be reduced by 15%. Nationally such an advance in the U.S. over a 20 year period would eliminate the need for 30 coal-fired plants. Speaker Mike Johnson says democracy is "messy," as Rep. Greene of Georgia calls for a resolution for him to step down for violating a rule that no legislation would be brought up that lacks majority support. Only 101 Republican members of the House supported it less than half. How then would the funding of the federal government its departments of defense, homeland security, education, health, operate as the deadline for funding it is tonight? This is left unsaid. One can see the Senate and House live on C-SPAN television at this very moment. It appears that the older senior members of the Republican party have not done a good job of talking to their younger less experienced colleagues and building agreement, that the mediocrity of leadership in both parties for the past three decades, even four, is the cause. Unstable politics in the Republican party as it is split with older senior members on  one side and younger many first time elected organized by the Freedom Caucus group on the other.  Many are from the Southern states and some from rustbelt midwest showing the deep divides that still shape the US. Democrat Steny Hoyer the House Minority leader who has worked in Congress for over 40 years called it on the House floor, and he said its a harsh word delaying and "dissemble." Democrats call for compromise to govern, the compromise was finally reached today March 22 to pass the $1.2 trillion spending bill with something for each side or somethings that both sides wanted, funding at border and child care. ...

Older homeowners like Carol Couts of Yuba City, California, who were persuaded to take on mortgages they could not afford on their social security checks which is all they had, often fradulently, are in a position to lose their homes and have nowhere to go. There are say home loan counselors, hundreds of thousands of people like this in places like the Central Valley of California. They do not qualify for the mortgage relief programs of the Obama administration which typically reduce the interest rate and stretch the payments over longer periods to lower the payments substantially. These are people on social security checks, which may be their entire source of earnings, and this is low enough so that the only way they can get relief is to rescind the fradulent loan entirely or cut the principal, things lenders are unwilling to take. These elderly people in such a precarious situation could end up being a blight on the nation, as something like this has not been allowed to happen in the entire post war period....

Todd Schlanger, senior investment strategist at Vanguard, is cited in this WSJ report saying the 60-40 strategy makes sense now because of lower stock valuations and higher bond yields. His forecast for Vanguard for a 60% stocks and 40% bonds globally diversified strategy is for a annualized 10 year median return of 5.4%. Schlanger says 60-40 strategy used to be a bellwether, and that strategy is an enduring strategy.

Stock valuations that Schlanger says are lower are reflected in the S&P 500 which is trading at 18.2 times its expected earnings over the next 12 months, down from 21.6 at the start of 2022. The 10 year average is 17.5.

Rural towns with populations of about 1000 or 1000 to 5000 are in a acute crisis when it comes to labor supply to run school buses, clean offices, run the town offices, run sports programs for kids, mowing the cemetery lawn, taking seniors out for meals, driving Little Leaguers to Away games. Jon Kamp of the WSJ provides this report from Ashland, Maine, pop. 1200. Leland Tarr is 65 years old and doing all these things. Town manager Martin says Tarr can't retire as there is no one to do this, he can't find people or the money to to hire people. And Tarr says "fishing is calling." All across Texas in towns across the vast hinterland, and in the prairie states including Kansas this situation exists. People in the public workforce in these small towns in rural America tend to be older and replacing them is a persistent challenge. These towns have to offer competitive salaries as not many people want to move to Texas towns like Muleshoe population  5000  on the New Mexico border. ...

Accident investigators for the Ethipian and Lions Air crashes say Boeing faile to inform FAA safety inspectors and Southwest safety specialists of the deactivation of a feature that warns pilots about malfunctioning sensors. The new models of the plane had this feature made optional in a new automated stall prevention system called MCAS. Southwest Airlines management and pilots did not know about this in 2017 a year after the planes went into service, and learned about this only after the Lions Air crash in October 2018. After the crash of Lions Air plane Southwest had asked Boeing to activate the alerts on its MAX planes.

The cost will increase the longer the effort for cleanup of PFAS chemicals used in military bases is delayed and could also lead to increased contamination of water in surrounding areas. In 2025 the cost is about $31 billion for 50 US military installations says The Guardian.  The Environmental Working Group policy analysis group senior analyst Jared Hayes is cited in The Guardian- "The DoD is facing a ticking cleanup time bomb as funding falls dramatically behind cleanup costs.” “The DoD has an obligation to its service members, the families living on bases, and the surrounding communities that have already been contaminated, so they need to clean up their mess." Steps taken by Secretary of State Tillerson are drawing criticism from Senator McCain and Democrats in Congress for weakening the diplomatic efforts of the U.S. Before taking office Tillerson, who believes the State Department has a bloated staff, announced a 31% cut in its budget. A year later  the cuts are leading to the departure of many senior diplomats. Some like Mr. Miller have received only a few minutes to talk to Tillerson, six top career diplomats were fired by Tillerson. Most hiring is stopped and a $25,000 buyout is being promoted to get 2000 career diplomats to leave by October 2018. This report describes a retirement class for diplomats with 26 senior employees, including two acting secretaries of statein early 50's who would normally wait many years before retiring. The top two position ranks at State are career ambassador and career minister. This is cut from 39 to 19. Political appointees are also missing to fill positions with only 10 of 44 political positions filled. Some experts see a loss also in diversity as this happens. Differences between the Nikki Haley, who is the next senior official in America's foreign service and a potential successor to Tillerson, and Mr Tillerson are also complicating the situation at the State Department. During the Obama and Bush administrations experts cited the weak role played by the institutions such as diplomatic services in promoting America's role in the world. This was not corrected in any significant way in the last decade. The position of the diplomatic service has weakened further, along with the abandonment of America's leadership role under the presidency of Mr. Trump. It will require a future president's concerted effort to restore the diplomatic service under new leadership and with a new generation of diplomats more in tune with the multipolar world of today.   ...

Alexander Ward's new book Internationalists looks at how Jake Sullivan, senior adviser to president Biden, has come up with anew policy of a foreign policy that works with domestic policy both one and the same, so that a firm economic foundation can be given to American workers and their families. Years of neglect of American workers and families by foreign policy experts and keeping foreign policy distant from domestic needs and policies have led to the deindustrialization of America and hurt workers and families. Jake Sullivan presented his and Biden's vision at the Brookings Institution and delved into domestic economic policy  and foreign policy at the same time. He then presented this vision at the Council of Foreign Relations.

Tankersley of The Washington Post looks at a 30 page analysis of Trump's economic policies by his two senior advisors Peter Navarro, UC Irvine economist, and Wilbur Ross. In it the authors say Trump will be able to increase economic growth from 2% to 3.5% by providing a better and even playing field for American companies in the way they compete with other countries. It means the renegotiation of treaties with these countries will lead to better trade for the U.S. This would include they say the U.S. saying it would leave the WTO unless changes are made. The authors say that with Trump in the White House unfair trading practices would end, instead of it leading to trade wars as some other economists believe.

Lindner met with senior FDP leaders in Potsdam to plan breaking away from the Scholz government 2 months before it happened on November 5. Lindner was fired that day by Scholz after making unacceptable demands including scrapping climate action targets, and reducing investments in infrastructure. The supplementary budget passed by Scholz was to reidirect 60 billion euros of unspend Covid money to needed infrastructure and climate action projects. The German Constitutional Court declared it unconstitutional.

The FDP is polling 4% which means it is headed to the situation a decade back where it had no seats in parliament. Which explains Lindner's actions seen as a betrayal by the Scholz government. The greens had advocated investment 4 years back which never happened because of Lindner and FDP opposition hurting the German economy's resilience.
