Milbank describes Romney's problem as similiar to that of Al Gore- the feeling one gets that he is just not authentic. He tries to be a regular guy but he is not. He campaigns on his business experience, giving little attention to his record and experience as governor of Massachusetts.

Rogaine developed by Upjohn , then sold by Pfizer and now by J&J, was developed for high blood pressure but because of hair growth as a side effect was turned into a baldness drug. It is now sold in a mousse form. It is marketed like something you need to have in the bathroom like toothpaste, use often even if to prevent future baldness. Sales are still only around $46 million after an effort to boost sales. One see this in many other drugs advertising, but is it something you use like toothpaste?

Drone warfare of 2025 replaces mechanized regiments in Ukraine war says this report in  NYT 2025. Each side Russia and Ukraine plans to produce over 1 million drones in 2025. Abrams tanks are ineffective in this situation- it is World War 1 and World War II at the same time, trench warfare for inches of territory and drone warfare in the air and jamming of drones. There are newer fibre optic drones and AI drones that do not have radio signals that can be jammed. On an on it goes in this report in the NYT showing for the first time how this war has changed. What can be done to stop such a war? NATO was set up to oppose the Soviet Union. It was never reconstituted and changed to take note of the new situation. A new defense architecture's need was ignored when Russia was treated as insignificant for its GDP, just as China and India was treated for its GDP for most of the 20th century. A new defense architecture for Europe with new needs. After the end of the Soviet Union when the Warsaw Pact was dismantled did the NATO alliance that was set up to counter the Soviet Union also need to be dismantled as there was no more Soviet Union, no Warsaw Pact. The failure to integrate the European state in the East did not take place under free market capitalism. The warnings were ignored. Under Obama Russia was treated in terms of its GDP, a fundamental failure to grasp European history. As Le Monde analysis says the fall of the Berlin Wall was not understood in all its aspects including Russia's decision to forge a new path.   ...

As one group of B-2's headed west pver the Pacific, another group quietly headed east to bomb the Iranian nuclear weapons development sites. The intent was to carry out the decision made by the US and the EU and tacitly supported by Russia, China, India, and the world, to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons. It is now evident that since the beginning of 2025 the number on priority of the DJT administration in foreign policy was to end Iran's effort to get a nuclear weapon. This is why the US DJT administration brought together Gulf regimes Qatar and UAE, Saudis for $2 trillion in business and economic deals in a DJT visit in May 2025. It is also evident that when India launched air strikes on Pakistan terrorist bases in June the US president DJT ended the war quickly in 72 hours. The Pakistan military head met with DJT in the White House a week back. This was preparation for the plan to take out the nuclear sites with minimal regional instability, a goal of the American people after Reagan/Bush miscalculations in supporting Hussein in Iraq and creating the Middle East wars Americans have had enough of. It may close a chapter of violent conflicts in the Middle East to be replaced with US support for India, UAE/Qatar/Saudi, Pakistan economic deals economic agreements. Much of the Indian media fails to understand this. The job of a US president if done right has responsibilities to the Nation and the World, after all the missteps of his predecessors DJT is stepping into this role. ...

The U.S. FDIC voted on March 29, 2011, to propose new rules that will require banks to hold at least 5% of the credit risk on securities backed by mortgages. During the mortgage crisis banks were able to sell packages of risky mortgages to investors without having some stake in the loans, leading to speculative behaviours. This proposal was mandated by the Dodd-Frank Act and was voted unanimously at the FDIC. Because the proposal does not apply to securities carrying a government guarantee, which is 90% of the market today, this will not have an immediate impact. Some mortgages are excluded- under one proposal mortgages where a borrower puts a 20% down payment would be excluded, and borrowers would have to meet an income threshold, and be current on all loans. The proposal is a joint effort of the FDIC, and the Securities and Exchange Commission. The idea is to have securitization to occur in an environment where the issuers of securities backed by mortgages have some skin in the game. Securities experts commented favorably on the rule and the proposals. The presence of such a rule would clearly have changed the behaviour of mortgage securities issuers in the U.S. 2008 subprime financial crisis....

Carlos Tavares runs Stellantis the company that combined the operations of France's Peugeot, Italy's Fiat and America's Chrysler right out of his living room in his Lisbon, Portugal home one week every month. He is a believer in the advantages of hybrid work model and says most of the 75,000 workers at the company can work remotely most of the time. The quality time that is generated in this new work model that allows life balance and getting fresh air walks outside is needed when you consider that auto companies such as his are embracing world of electric cars- Stellantis will have 75 models of electric cars by 2030 In this interview with the WSJ shown here he says the fact that one is giving back high quality time that otherwise goes to commuting means you get more time during the day. Carlos Tavares says remote work is an opportunity to recreate a better life balance. He doesn't see any risk in it at all. He sees how hard people are working, harder than they did before, and says giving back one half hour or two hours of quality time actually helps the process of getting good work. Look he says after a long day of remote work people need that time to go out and have a walk for an hour just to refresh one's mind, because the work was so intense. Tavares asks why shouldn't we trust each other? He believes it is the only way to go. Asked about his own work routine for remote work.He says it is the Portuguese routine of  7 am to 4 pm or 5 pm and then an hour out for a walk. He has a small desk in his living room, and he is sitting there with his iPad, grandkids are going by but nobody sees them. Does he miss the face to face contact? He does says Tavares. He still sees other employees as he does go to the office. What about mentoring for junior  employees? This does not have to be five days a week, you may want coaching one day a week, what you don't want is someone on your back five days a week. For Tavares it is all about the quality of time that is used. On company culture the much abused word Tavares makes some good points. If you say this is the culture and hand it to somebody then how do you get that creative mind to exercize his own judgement, how do you get diversity of thinking. Tavares is forthright and honest here- he says if I give you a culture and put you in that box I will get it wrong, and by killing the valuable diversity of thinking I will make it counterproductive. Actually with French, Italian and American operations under one roof and employees of 170 nationalities there is a value in appreciating the value each employee can bring. Practices at Stellantis- Tavares says if you want your people to be in game shape or in great shape mentally don't call them or email them on weekends, so that they can use the weekend to recharge themselves. He even apologizes for calling on a weekend. Or if you email your people tell them to not respond till Monday. ...

Norris provides an insightful account into the research and thinking of Janet Yellen, the new chairwoman of the U.S. Federal Reserve. In her research work Fed chairwoman Yellen has placed importance on the long term unemployment rate and the difficulties workers unemployed for long period have in finding work. This is likely to determine Fed policy on interest rates as the unemployment rate inches closer to the Fed target of 6.5% set by Bernanke in Dec. 2012. Norris points out the emphasis Yelen has placed on this in speeches since being nominated to succeed Ben Bernanke at the Fed. In a recent speech Yellen emphasized that in the recession of the early 1980's median time unemployed people said they were unemployed was 12 weeks, which jumped to 25 weeks for about 6 months in 2010 and is at 17 weeks in the most recent jobs report. Another indicator Yellen has emphasized is labor's share of income in the nonfinancial corporate sector which remained between 66% and 61% from 1950 to early 2000's. This fell below 60% in 2005 and is at 57.1% barely budging from the 2011 figure. In papers written with George Ackerloff, Yellen has advanced the "fair-wage hypothesis," that workers do not do as good a job when wages are held down. Their research also shows its normal for workers in periods of recession to hold out against the lower salaries offered during recession periods, because these workers tend to fall behind newer workers hired with better wages later when the economy recovers. At the confirmation hearing Yellen made it clear that the Fed would do all it can to help the long term unemployed by creating a stronger job market, a job market where these workers would be drawn into work and employers provide job training as well as opportunities for advancement....

Heathrow was built haphazardly as traffic increased since its opening in 1946, with a capacity to handle 45 million passengers at its 4 terminals it was congested and handled 68 million annually. The building of Terminal 5 will ease congestion and increase capacity by 45% making a big difference for British Airways which will operate out of T5 and a big difference in baggage handling ( a million bags weren't ready for passengers at destination in 2006), in the lounges and lounge environments for waiting passengers 2500 at a time) ., and after an annex is built by 2010 passengers will not have to be taken by bus to waiting planes. other airports like Schipol with 4 runways compared to Heathrow's 2 and built with a better layout and plan, and airports in Asia of Singapore Airlines and in the Middle East at Doha are upgrading so BA will only be doing what places are doing. Because the terminal hangups have been costly for British Airways leading to a shrinking of about 20% of its flight network, as it concentrated more on upscale customers, and lost passengers to more efficient airlines., ithe cost will likely be paid off quickly for BA. Demand. is so high at Heathrow that a pair of takeoff and landing spots can cost as much as $50 million and would be going up as Star Alliance and Skyteam member airlines move ito BA's old facilities. Considering the losses from th inefficient setup at the old terminal BA's estimate that T5 savings would cover its cost of 330 million pounds ($660 million) to equip the new building in in the next 10 years may even be understated. Of this 62 million pounds was spent on the new lounges. BA leases the T5 Terminal from Heathrow's BAA owned by Spain's Ferrovial SA, which spent $4.3 billion to build T5. ...

The cultural identity of the Nation that has existed since the founders Washington and Jefferson, and since it's second beginning Lincoln and then TR and FDR,  was seen to be at risk in 2024, yet no party has put forward the need for Cultural Literacy as a Nation as part of national classroom education, a plea by E.D.Hirsch Jr. of University of Virginia, and others, from the 1980's onwards. Kash Patel is a public defender from New York, who worked in the NSC staff in the first Trump term. He is of Gujarati East Africa origin who studied at University of Richmond for history and Pace University for his JD. He actively defended DJT in what is known as the Nunes memo for the Mueller investigation into links with Russia. He also faced opposition after Defense Secretary Esper was replaced and he served as assistant to the new Defense Secretary, in appointment to the FBI, by then Attorney General William Barr. Kash Patel actively campaigned for DJT during the 2024 campaign. Its incorrect to call a loan that has only slightly lower, same or higher monthly payment after modification, a loan modification. The intent is to make a loan affordable in monthly payments for the borrower, for it to be a meaningful modification. Says Tom Miller, the Attorney General of Iowa, "it should'nt be called modifications if people pay more or approximately the same." Many lenders and banks do not want to have to mark to market a whole set of loans of one type in one geographical region, as an accounting rule now requires, just because they have modified one loan of that type, because their reserves are severely depleted and most are already or nearly insolvent. So their way of discouraging loan modifications as a solution is to respond by saying that loans go into foreclosure even after modification, when the modification they are talking about is tacking on interest penalties and fees that accelerate the home into foreclosure in some cases, and in others by leaving payments higher or the same make foreclosure just as likely as before. Tom Miller, attorney general of Iowa, also says that " if you do real modifications, the default rate is significantly lower." Some mortgage companies say that default rates drop significantly, some to as low as 25%, when loan payments are reduced to the 30-40% of borrower income range, which is becoming the standard for a meaningful modification. Analyst Ron Dubitsky's research at Credit Suisse confirms this, showing lower payments reduced defaults to less than 50%. Research by Credit Suisse and Alan White, a law professor at Valparaiso University also show that at this time loan, 2 years into the foreclosure crisis, modification has mostly resulted in higher monthly payments. White says banks like Wells Fargo, a large servicer of loans, have done have modified few loans as apercentage of their delinquent mortgages. Sheila Bair and others have long advocated reducing loan payments to 30-40% of monthly income since early 2007, because foreclosure is costlier for banks than loan modification, but met resistance from the banks and lenders and their lobbying groups. The relevant question is that if the banks are misquided in pursuing this course, and its not in the interests of the banks or the country's economy- because accelerating foreclosures or not taking modification action in the middle of a huge wave of layoffs may result in a even bigger wave of foreclosures that threaten housing prices and effectively leave banks insolventleading to nationalization- then what purpose did all this serve except to exacerbate the crisis and increase the price tag of the government's and country's ultimate rescue of homeowners?...

The S&P 500 was down 41.9% in 1931 and 38.6% in 1937. In 1974 it was down 29.7%. What was it down by in 2008. In 2008 the S&P 500 was down 45.5%. This matched what happened in the Great Depression and we are not through 2008 yet as one can see from what is happening to the share price of Citigroup, other banks and the Detroit automakers. It a hell of a year and the errors during the Great Depression were different but there are errors in policy and in managing the crisis in this one also. For example the announcement by the Treasury Secretary Paulson that none of the money in the bailout will go towards buying mortgage securites may have led to renewed doubts about Citigroup's portfolio of toxic assets. The failure of the banks and other companies to get the uptick rule reinstated also ends up causing a run on the stocks of faltering companies exaggerating the impact of any doubts and creating a need for government help. Whern the history of this is rewritten the management of this crisis and the policy making will also be faulted in amanner that the Great Deprtession policies were faulted but for different reasons. The failure to address foreclosures early in 2008 as Martin Feldstein repeatedly urged in the WSJ since the early months of 2008 and continues to do so, and as other policymakers like Sheila Bair at FDIC have urged repeatedly, will be one of these major errors. Any failure to address the automakers cash funds crisis for operating expenses both with money and with the proper conditions could also go out of control and cause a major unemployment crisis in the midwest that could spread to the rest of the country. The NYT editorial took note of this on November 22, 2008, asking for funds however distasteful the behaviour of the automakers management may be. See this link. And public opinion could get the managemnt to resign or this could be a condition for signing onto the bridge loan from the government. In this particular issueof automakers Detroit automaker's management's serious errors will be written about years from now which combined with any indecision or slippage on the part of awmakers could lead to the economy and unemployment spiralling out of control, because so much is happening at the same time. It comes at atime when the storm is shifting to the consumer side to credit card and other consumer loans even as it is continuing to take its toll on the housing sector in the USA and on exports and the auto industry and other sectors around the world. ...
