Standard and Poor's changed its rating of U.S. Treasury securities from stable to negative. U.S. Treasury securites are still rated AAA. Moody's made no change in the rating. U.S gross debt as a percentage of GDP is 91.6%, with the comparable number for Germany at 80%, France 82%, Canada 84%, the UK at 77%, Japan 221%. The U.S. budget deficit as a percentage of GDP is 10.6%, the comparable number for Germany is 3.3%, France 7%, Canada 5.5%, the UK 10.4%. John Chambers, the head of the sovereign ratings committee at Standard & Poor's stated that "the sign of political gridlock was a key determinant in our outlook change." The budget deficit will go up to $1.5-$1.65 trillion, or over 10% of America's GDP in 2011. The gross debt for the U.S. is at $14.219 trillion, just short of the $14.294 trillion cap. With rising entitlement costs and the interest on debt this is expected to go over the debt ceiling as early as July 8, 2011. Missteps by the Detroit automakers include fighting fuel efficiency legislation in 2005, even when the USA faced higher gas prices, and diluting the fuel efficiency legislation with a target of 35mpg for 2020 at a time when Europeans were taking up more aggressive challenges as public opinion there moved in that direction. They also spent heavily in lobbying spending, about $175 million for GM and Ford in the last 10 years, and some would say lobbying against the national interest and the national security interest of the USA, because failure to reduce consumption of oil through fuel efficient cars weakens the economy by sending hundreds of billions of dollars overseas to mideast countries. The closing of plants in states like Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia and Delaware and consolidating their operations closer to home weakened Congressional support, And the foreign auto makers built plants in places in the south like Alabama resulting in Senator Shelby of Alabama becoming allied with them. Rick Wagoner failed to show the vision and leadership needed, and Detroit failed to realize that vision and leadership were required to run these companies. not coming up through the large bureaucracies of these companies. And people associate him with declining market share and a company in decline and asky why. The whole mood of the country is reflected in newspaper columns across the country, in reader comments that run into the hundreds for each article overwhelmingly negative for taxpayer money going to Detroit automakers. This is the situation today and catches the Detroit automakers management, union, dealers, suppliers, by surprise as they have become so used to the status quo and know nothing different....

Only upto a point does money make a difference and only in an highly unequal society that comes around every 100 years at times like this. This comparison here is with top 10% and bottom 10% when cost of things have gone up tremendously. It is a poor comparison and validates a society that does not value health and character over money. In a more normal situation where incomes are better laid out across the population for decent access to a good life, public investment for health facilities in every town or section of large cities, and looking at people in the middle from 20% to 80% in the income distribution -it is the choices made how much to spend on fruits,  vegetables, ancient grains, and the educational access in a fair deal society that teaches one to make good food choices, avoiding processed foods and eating less meat and poultry, exercizing, and avoiding alcohol and tobacco, meditation, yoga and spiritual life, and use of public health facilities for exercise, can gradually add up to better healthier living at moderate incomes.  ...

Reliance India Limited to build 168,000 b/d Clean shale oil refinery in Brownsville Texas, to cut US trade imbalance of $58 billion with India by $15 billion a year, about 25%. Much of the product could be exported to India from the port of Brownsville in Texas. The president of America First Refining Trey Giggs says- "The United States has a surplus of light shale oil but a shortage of refining capacity designed to process it." The Indian economy grows at 6.3% in the third quarter of 2017. The demonetization, and new GST tax plan, had slowed the economic growth to 5.7% in the second quarter of 2017. Higher economic growth is important to generate the jobs needed as 10 million young people join the workforce each year. The Modi government responded to the slowdown by accelerating spending on infrastructure- a $100 billion spending plan on roads and highways, and $32 billion cash infusion for state run banks with the effort to clean up the bad loans in the banking system. 

Elections in prime minister Modi's home state of Gujarat are coming up and this will give some indication of voter sentiment in 2017. The Pew Research Survey in 2017 shows Modi's personal popularity is high and continues to bolster the government's prospects.

Jet Blue came to Boston in 2004. At the time it had one gate and 30 employees at Boston's Logan International Airport. The airline now has 2300 workers and 17 gates in Jan 2012. It now has 104 nonstop daily flights to 44 locations in the U.S. and Caribbean, with plans to reach 150 flights by 2015. As American and Delta pulled back to focus on their main hubs, Jet Blue expanded quickly. It started as an airline for vacation travellers, but soon attracted business passengers for the cheaper cost of flights, especially for cost conscious travellers after the recession hit in 2008. Jet Blue also offered better service and more leg room for business passengers. Jet Blue's CEO, Dave Barger, says 30% of traffic into and out of Logan now is for business travel.

Tax changes for autombiles as part of a"fiscal correction" were announced by the Finance Minister, Pranab Mukherjee. The base excise tax on most goods manufactured in India was raised from 10% to 12%. The excise tax on larger cars with gasoline engines above 1.2 litres or diesel engines above 1.5 litres was raised to 24% from 22%. The customs tax on imported cars and SUV's over $40,000 and gasoline engine over 3000 cubic centimetres, or diesel engine over 2500 cubic centimetres was increased to 75% from 60%.

IHS reports show the cost of making the Galaxy S 4 smartphone with 16 gigabytes of flash memory is about $244. This is 15% more than the cost for the Galaxy III and 17% more than Apple iPhone 5 with 16 gigabyte memory. Higher cost is due to better sensors, a better processor, and larger full high-definition display for upgrades. Samsung plans to launch the new phone in April 2013 in 155 countries. Unlike Apple Samsung does its own manufacturing providing it an edge in hardware capabilities.

For Brazil the fall in commodity prices led to weakening of the real and derivative contracts unwinding worsened things. Harris's proposal goes beyond this to help the hardest hit households. Harris supports emergency relief funding for homeless. Apple's legal campaign was intended to slow the increasing shipment of Android phones and device makers such as Samsung that make Android phones. THe $15 billion is itself a floor for such assistance in prior years. says Gawain Kripke, policy director for Oxfam International, "at this point the money is not looking all that good." Former South Korean president Lee Myung-bak becomes the fourth person indicted in the Samsung scandal. The case shows close connections between family run business companies and the government in South Korea. The case brings up the involvement of Mr. Lee in the pardoning of the Samsung chairman who was convicted of tax evasion. In this case Samsung made payment in  legal fees of $6 million to an auto parts company DAS Corp. A South Korean court resolved a dispute about the owner of DAS ruling that he was the auto parts company's actual owner. Lee was president from 2008 to 2013. His successor Park Geun-Hye was sentenced to 25 years for corruption that involved Samsung and Hyundai Motor, as reported in the Wall Street Journal. 

In recent years and with the election of president Moon Jae-in South Korean public sentiment has turned against the involvement of business, particularly Samsung, in the nation's politics.

The Labor Department reports U.S. unemployment rate at 4.4% in April 2017, dropping slightly from 4.5% in March. Average hourly wage year over year growth is 2.5%. Including people working part time or those who dropped out of the labor market the unemployment rate was down from 8.9% to 8.6%. 211,000 jobs were added in April 2017- this makes the average for three months 174,000. But the picture for marginalized workers because of skills erosion, location, and other factors is still an issue- the labor participation rate fell from 63% to 62.9%.
