Roberts lost his job at aChrysler plant in Belvidere, near Rockford, Illinois, and Butt lost his job a German auto parts maker. Roberts gets a $64,000 severance package, and 59 weeks of unemployment insurance, with apossible additional 13 weeks, with monthly check of $1426 that is 27% of his income of $64,000 a year when employed. attribute 33 weeks of the 59 weeks to the stimulus measures of President Obama. Butt has 4 months as atransfer worker at full pay, which can be as long as 1 year, then he has till May 2010 at 80% of his pay when employed full time of 2700 euros amonth. The transfer company gives job training and job hunting advice. He continues getting his medical insurance benefits which are provided by the state. Roberts loses his health insurance with his job, and hopes to pay his expenses for a2 bedroom apartment with his girlfriend who makes close to $1500 as an elementary school teacher. He will take a2 year electronic engineering course with a local college using $6000 from Obama's Dislocated Worker's Program. But he isn't sure if he can do his studies after one year when his unemployment benefits expire. Butt can afford to take a vacation to Cyprus and his lifestyle is not much affected he says. His wife works as a nurse at a rheumatism clinic. Butt is like the 64% of Germans who say the crisis is not affecting them personally. Roberts is like the 87% of Americans who say this crisis id hurting them in their persdonal lives. To pay for the state funded benefits the total wage tax burdenas a percentage of labor costs for Butt is 52% in Germany. FOr Roberts it is 30% in the USA. France is at 49% Spain at 39% and the UK at 34%. Germany's public expenditures for these labor benefits are 2.97% of GDP in 2006, the USA's are 0.38%. Spain and France are at 2.32% and the UK at 0.61%. This also explains why the impact in countries like Germany and Spain is not felt so badly as in the USA. In SPain there is also the lower mobility and the safety net of family support helping people cope making it possible to cope with 20% unemployment without serious distress and hardships. Michael Boskin of Stanford University, chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors under the elder Bush, on the risks of protectionism and higher taxes to the economy in the long run, and the need for the Fed to balance the need for providing help with rate cut with the need to keep inflation at low levels. He suggests workouts of the losses from subprime mortgages not bailouts is the correct answer. P.S. A note on December 6, 2008, after the crisis with Bear Stearns in early 2008, and the severe October credit crisis and a series of bailouts of banks, financial institutions and the Detroit auto industry. If one looks for the thinking that was behind the Republican Bush administration's early stand to take no proactive steps to improve things in the economy, then Boskin's article summarizes some of the thinking behind it. Lowering rates at the time except gradually,after the Greenspan moves in preceding years to lower rates and let them stay that way too long (leaving too much liquidity and loose lending in the financial markets), was not to be taken lightly with additional concerns of pushing inflation upwards. And Boskin way underestimated the losses from subprime in December 2007 when he used the estimate of $300 billion investor losses centred in real estate made by the OECD at the time, or as he puts it just one-half of 1% of American's net worth. Concluding that in a $14 trillion economy such losses could be absorbed. He anticipated delays in financing and the need to mitigate that but did not anticipate a collapse of credit markets. Part of this may stem from not realizing the impact of highly leveraged debt on the books of financial institutions and what it could do if fear gripped the financial markets, and underestimating the impact of subprime debt with mortgage securities that had no transparency and distorted credit ratings. Which is why he says that policy should be for workouts not bailouts, emphasizing that the worst idea out there is for a broad interest rate freeze for mortgage borrowers which would throw into question the sanctity of private contracts and thus deter investment. This policy of resisting loan modifications continued as policy of the Bush administration even as Martin Feldstein, another Harvard economist and Reagan administration economic advisor, advocated just that from early 2008 with repeated oped articles in the WSJ throughout the rest of the year....

Now in March 2008 it appears that defaults on construction loans by smaller regional and local banks to single family home builders is spreading across the nation to the point where it may bring the credit squeeze for home, auto and credit card loans to local communities in smaller towns across America. This will be further slowdown not just housing but consumption at the local Walmart and retail stores. Loans to single family home builders went down from a peak about 2 years ago of $350 billion to about $250 billion in 2007. now the delinquencies on these loans is 8% in the 4th quarter 2007 according to Foresight Analytics. Its much higher at 14% in states like Ohio and Michigan. The Atlanta afffiliate of National Home Builders Association says that 20% of these builders are late in payments in that area. In states like Florida, Arizona and Arkansas, and Minnesota the delinquencies is at 10%. Note that the highly reputed ones like the Levitt and Sons that built Levittown in the post war period are also taking bankruptcy as banks are calling in their loans to be paid in full when they see builders losing money. What first appeared as signs of trouble in the Cleveland area is now spreading across the nation. Mr Whitlatch who studied planning at the University of Pennsylvania and went into building homes in the Clevelad area since 1969 is one of the home builders who is declaring bankruptcy after 9 million dollars in debt and using up $2 million of his own money and now selling off his family home. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have been authorized by the Bush Administration to put $200 billion into the mortgage market to keep things from getting worse in the housing market but much of the damage is already underway. How else will this affect local economies the local banks will be in trouble. Analysts estimate that about 150 local smaller and regional banks will go under in the next 3 years. Compared to this about 900 local banks went under in the S&L crisis over 5 years. It will put new stress on the local communities and their economy in coming months and years as the economic crisis goes from big cities to smaller towns and communities throughout America. ...

Ford gains market share in California, as Toyota and Honda's share of the market declines. Ford's market share is up 2 percentage points on the east and west coasts compared to 5 years ago, according to R.L. Polk data. The Ford Fusion sales for the first half of 2013 are up 18% over the prior year and exceed 300,000. Growth in the coastal U.S. markets comes from the 2013 Fusion, the C-Max, hybrids, and the redesigned Escape. Cars and crossovers are especially important in coastal markets. In the past Ford depended mostly on SUV sales in the midwestern markets with imports dominant in coastal markets. This is now changing with models like the Fusion and hyrids introduced by Ford. With it the image of Ford is also changing, as buyers in California are among the most affluent and culturally influential in setting trends.

Couple of things stand out. First an aging workforce at the oil companies. At ConocoPhillips half of the workers are eligible for retirement in 5 years. According to the Society of Petroleum Engineers about 40% of petroleum engineers are over 50 today. This also means that they are higher paid employees and takes up more of Conoco's budget for exploration of $11 billion as a compared to a younger workforce. What the industry needs is lots of people to do the explortation and drilling jobs from construction labor to project managers, to geologists and petroleum engineers to geoscientists. About half a million petroleum related jobs were lost between 1982 and 2000 when the oil industry had low prices and plenty of supply leading to large layoffs. During 1982 to 2003 petroleum related undergraduate programs saw enrolment drop dramitically by 85%. Now the industry is paying the price with severe people constraints when demand has picked up. Cambridge Energy Associates estimate is that there would be about a 10-15% deficit of people even a few years from now in 2010 because it takes time to turno out new engineers and geologists. Today there is big interest on campuses in petroleum engineering and petroleum related fields. Its the highest paid field for college grauates at $68,000 average and at schools like Texas Tech its $100,000 average. Still only 3700 petroleum engineering students are enrolled on campuses compared to the peak of 11,000 in 1983 so there is some hesitation about this field because of the cycles of ups and downs. The novel approach that oil companies are adopting of turning to the auto industry and to academia to fill the people needs is worth watching because here are 2 industries going in opposite directions and whereas one has a shortage the other has qualified people who have no opportunity, a shift makes sense and training to make that shift makes a lot of sense. The Association of Drilling Contractors has teamed up with Ford Motor Company to hold a career fair to attract auto employees who are subject to buyouts....

The European automobile market staged a recovery in 2014 with sales up 5.7% to 12.6 million, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association. The big gains were made by the lower cost brands such as Renault's Dacia made in Romania, and VW's Skoda made in the Czech Republic. Dacia sales increased in 2014 by 24% to 359,141 and Skoda's sales increased by 14% to 554,479. A Dacia Sandero without air conditioning, power locks or radio is priced at 7,990 euros in France compared to a better equiped Skoda Fabia at 12,640 euros and a VW Golf at 17,388, a big price difference for budget car buyers. The major brands continue to dominate with the Golf model continuing as the best selling model in Europe. GM and Ford with the Opel Corsa and Ford Fiesta also increased market share. VW's market share is 12.7%, Skoda's 4.4%.

American manufacturers are importing more of the parts that go into each product. According to Susan Houseman, a senior economist at the W.E. Upjohn Institute in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the imported portion for these parts is up to 25% from 17%. Even the Bureau of Economic Analysis figure of the share of GDP coming from manufacturing is overstated, says Houseman. That figure was 11.2% for 2009, but is closer to 10.5% if all the imported components are included instead of being counted as domestically made. This is down from 14.2% ten years ago, and about 30% in the 1950's. There is deep concern that the manufacturing decline has weakened America. Houseman says that one cannot separate manufacturing from innovation, and she asks if America can continue to be strong in R&D with a shrunken manufacturing base. James Jordan of the Interstate Maglev project, says Maglev- which uses special magnets to levitate and propel high-speed trains- was invented in the United States. Today equipment for that technology is manufactured and used in Japan, and innovation in high speed trains is taking place in Japan and Germany. The decline in manufacturing is shockingly large. From 1979 employment in manufacturing went down by 8.1 million to 11.6 million, with the largest drop occurring in the last ten years. With it America is losing something significant- all the knowhow and skills that go into making things. Today the airplane wings for several Boeing airliners are made in Japan and shipped here. In a not too distant past these wings would have been built here, and workers with the knowhow and skills for these critical components were part of Boeing's workforce....

With higher growth overseas multinational companies are increasingly investing outside their local base country. Germany has strong trade unions and German companies are investing outside Germany, in Eastern Europe and other countries. This is leading to a shift in investment to countries in Eastern Europe, China, India, etc. where there is growth and labor costs are attractive. The multinational companies still do a lot of the advanced research and manufacturing in their home base and say the growth overseas makes them stronger financially to continue to invest at home. The shift may also be due to the trade union factor- an example being the UAW union in the U.S., rigid labor rules, and other distortions from high wages and benefits that cannot be supported in the global economy. This includes distortions such as the Jobs Bank in the Detroit auto industry. Similiar situations exist in Europe where unions are strong and there is not enough of the flexibility needed for companies to grow in the global economy....

Highlighted green for fuel economy miles per gallon information and green for types of vehicles sold and the mix which is weighted towards bigger vehicles. More than 55% of all new vehicles purchased in 2005 were minivans, pickup trucks, vans or SUVs, says R.L. Polk, an auto-data provider in Southfield, Mich. Despite gas prices topping $3 a gallon in California and other parts of the country, light trucks have outsold passenger-car vehicles for the first six months of this year, making up 52.5% of total vehicle sales, according to Autodata Corp. The average fuel economy of new 2006 models was virtually flat with a year ago at 21 miles per gallon, according to the latest EPA report, despite the increasing deployment of technologies such as systems that shut off cylinders in V-8 engines and six-speed transmissions. The incremental gains from those technologies were offset by consumers, who continued to buy lower-mileage minivans, pickup trucks and sport-utility vehicles....

How Toyota's labor cost advantage is disappearing. By late 2009 Toyota's Georgetown Kentucky plant, 23 years old, where most workers are at the top of the pay scale could be the highest labor cost auto factory in the USA. A large number of Toyota workers are at the top wage of $25 an hour. Detroit's 4 year deal with the UAW gives them a 2 tier wage contract where lower paid workers earn only $26 an hour including benefits according to the Center for Automotive Research. At GM in 2011 its estimated the number of workers will be down by 6500 to 68000 workers, and one third of them earning the lower wage. How is Toyota responding? New hires will take 5 years not 3 to get to the top wage. And starting pay at a plant in Mississippi will be lower than the traditional $16. Its also cutting health care costs by setting up medical centers on site as at its San Antonio factory.

Peter Coy, Economics editor of Business Week, agrees with Paul Krugman's point made in a recent NYT op-ed column favoring staying on the course the Bernanke Fed has set, which is to continue its policy of monetary expansion as long as credit is tight and the economy is weak. The Fed has expanded monetary reserves Coy says by 114% over this year through May. The biggest increase since 1960 has been 16%. Coy says there is good reason for this. As other experts have pointed out, see links, most of the extra money the Fed has introduced into the economy has piled up in the reserves of banks. Consumers who who have debt at about 100% of USA GDP are not borrowing, businesses are not borrowing to invest, banks are not lending as before, and consumers are in a long period of debt reduction that will take years. This is why it is not inflationary. Consumer frugality, see links, is another factor that makes this situation a long term change in consumer behaviour, and a force for deflation. All this is happening in the background of a huge slack in the system as manufacturing capacity utilization is low at 68% and unemployment is increasing. Which is why informed experts looking at the situation on the ground see staying the course as the right action plan....

A transcript of remarks by Ben Benrnake as Fed Governor on Dec. 9, 2003, at meeting of the Federal Open Market Comittee which makes monetary policy in the USA. Bernanke is teling his colleagues here that it would be amistake to choke off growth unnecessarily by raising rates, that critics who say inflation is a threat are not well informed, and that the Open Market Comittee should remain patient. Here he points out that the large decline in the share of the population that is working -with one survey showing household employment at 2.9 million jobs below normal at that time- suggesting that employment could rise significantly before seeing pressure on wages and unit labor costs. With the underutilization of labor, the withdrawal of people from the full time labor force, and increase in parttime employment, there are todfay anumber of changes ocurring in the labor markets that build additional slack into the system from what the unemployment rate of 9% today would suggest. A similiar case could be made today with factory capacity utilization at 68% and dropping, and manufacturing hard hit and seeing a permanent downsizing in industries like automobiles. What about raw materials prices? Bernanke shows agraph of historical data, that suggest convincingly he says, even very large movements of raw materials prices appear to have muted effects on intermediate goods prices and no discernible effects on final goods inflation. The reason for this is that raw materials prices are only asmall portion oftotal costs, and unit labor costs are a far larger factor in inflation determination that raw materials prices. And at that time as is happening today wage growth is slow or negative. What about the dollar falling in value making imports more expensive, which we face today? Here Bernanke says that asimilar anlysis applies to the dollar. Large movements of the dollar he says, translate into smaller movements against the U.S. trade-weighted basket of currencies, and into smaller effects on import prices because of imperfect pass-throughs. And he goes on to say that the nonoil import prices, in turn, are are a relatively modest part of the overall price index, making the ultimate effects quite small. This analysis by Bernanke of the impact of rising raw materials prices and falling dollar having a muted effect, and the important role slack and underutilization of labor in the labor markets play in inflation, helps respond to critics like Laffer and others who say inflation is a threat and call for changes in the policy course the Fed has set....

At the end of September Deutsche Bank had $23.9 billion in tangible net worth, which is shareholders equity after stripping out intangible assets.
