A message for Mr. Modi, Nirmala Sitharaman and all who see Indian exports as a key driver in the economic recovery. Indian logistics costs are at 14-16% compared to 8-9% in nations of Europe and the US. This Economic Times report shows 20 Government of India ministries and agencies are involved in logistics for exports. A recent shipment of mahua flowers from Chhatisgarh to Le Havre port in France was held up for 2 weeks at Mumbai's Nava Shheva port, as cited here in the The Economic Times. Logistics help from Maersk helped China build its industrial capabilities. The port capabilities in logistics grew year after year from small beginnings in the 1990 period. Mr. Modi is starting this process in India as it is a key driver for foreign investment in the country. As China's logistics capabilities grew companies had the confidence that products manufactured in the country could be delivered to US and Europe efficiently and at low cost. This process takes a decade and the time to start building this capability is now with plans, stretch goals, investment and timely delivery. Maersk, a Danish company, has a big role to play in this effort in India. Government incentives could play a role, as well as negotiations with Maersk and with the assistance of the government of Denmark for technological collaboration at Indian ports. ...

With an extraordinary sentiment for China's people Joe Stilwell showed America as different from the colonial powers of which Japan was a part with its occupation of Korea and China in 1930-1945. America should recognize and be proud of men like  Joe Stilwell who commanded all American Forces in China and the Asian sector in World War II. Such forced labor as shown in Tuchman's book "Stilwell and the American Experience in China," was never seen in its human aspect. Stilwell was the first American to understand the ordinary Chinese people struggles of that period. He participated in their struggles, once even hid himself in Chinese freight trains in the 1930's to collect intelligence about Japanese intentions in northern China.  The war conditions for the Imperial Japanese war effort railway built through dense jungle between Rangoon and Bangkok in 1942-43. Tamil Indian and Indonesian laborers who died working on the railway are remembered here. 250,000 romusha or forced laborers of whom 90,000 died were Asian Indian. A much smaller number were Britishers and European POW's 12,000 in number immortalized in Bridge over the River Kwai, a movie about this period. Till now most of the Indian laborers remained obscure like so many millions obscure in the history books about the colonial period for Indonesia and India, with a population now numbering 1.7 billion people in the world. China with 1.2 billion people suffered the same fate in bombings by Imperial Japanese forces that rampaged across China in the war years. Such forced labor as shown in Tuchman's book "Stilwell and the American Experience in China," was never seen in its human aspect. Stilwell was the first American to understand the ordinary Chinese people struggles of that period. Domestic tourist trips up 19% over 2019 in China as China opens up to tourism are leading to only a 1% increase in total tourist spending, as tourists are just plain thrifty. Food inflation that is 10-15% in the US is about a catastrophic 40% in Europe with creeping higher margins of grocery stores. Compare that with China where inflation is less than 1%. WSJ looks at Zibo a city in China that was like hundreds of smaller industrial cities in China until a government publicity campaign got about 4.7 million people to visit it for its barbecue pancakes. The prices were relatively inexpensive with two people eating for $20. Yet this type of tourism is not boosting the Chinese economy when exports are slowing and the construction sector is in poor shape financially.

How quickly things can change - Italy is now growing faster than Germany or France. The construction industry is booming with energy efficient home renovation. The superbonus 110 is a payment by the Italian government for energy efficient housing improvements. The government pays 65% of the cost to homeowners making better energy efficient renovations plus 10%. As introduced by the Five Star movement government it was 100% plus additional 10%. Giorgia Meloni's government lowered it to 65% from 75% in 2023. This has boosted the construction industry in Italy and revived Italy's growth where it is growing faster than France and Germany. Germany is seeing about 0.3% growth compared to 0.7% predicted by OECD for Italy in 2024. Giorgia Meloni the new Italian prime minister, after Mario Draghi a central banking official, has continued Draghi's policies and provided a measure of stability and leadership to the government.  Much of the capital comes from the $216 billion or $200 billion euros that will be given to Italy from the COVID Recovery Fund. The US tariff on China made EV"s imported into the US is 100%. The EU has a 10% tariff. It has now imposed additional tariffs that range from 17% to 38% depending on its investigation with Chinese companies on how much support they get from the Chinese government as hidden subsidies. This move is to level the playing field. The result is that BYD faces a 17% tariff because it has operated relatively on its own. For Geely and SAIC it goes up to 38%. The tariff on European companies making EV's in China and exporting them is additional 21%. US carmakers (GM and Ford) have only a small presence in the Chinese car market compared to the Europeans who  make and sell 3 million luxury cars in the Chinese market (BMW, Audi, Mercedes Benz). About 25% of EV's sold in Europe are now China made EV's. The EU wants to level the playing field so that local makers maintain a strong presence in their home markets. The US with no significant car manufacturing presence in China of Ford, GM to protect is taking stronger action. ...

The most striking aspect about Pew Research on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion practices and DEI in companies in Nov 2024 compared to early 2023 is the shift in sentiment about how much it hurts White Men. 36% of Americans now think it hurts White Men compared to 14% a shift of 22%. Among Republicans also there is a striking shift of 10% in just over a year. Asians no longer see it improving their situation. It comes also at a time when White Men are going through an unprecedented drop in college enrollment compared to women after financial crises and surging college costs, the kind of trend that is seen as unhealthy for the Nation.  Overall the shift shows says PEW Research that workers are more likely to believe that focussing on DEI is a bad thing and too much attention is going into doing this at companies. Reports in WSJ on Jan 10, 2025 say CEO's are making a shift away from DEI in 2025 consistent with the change in sentiment nationally.  ...

About the family's ownership of the New York Times for many generations, Sulzberger would say that nepotism works. Sulzberger transformed and renewed the Times from what it was in the sixties before turning the paper over to management by his son in the nineties. The Times has been a family operation since being bought by Sulzberger's grandfather Adolph Ochs in 1896. Most of the newspapers in the U.S. are no longer run by the families that once owned them. The merits of a well run family operation are to be seen not just in the newspaper business. One of the most famous global brands is Toyota- which has returned to its family roots after a crisis and was in the postwar years led by Soichiro Toyoda and now by his son Akio Toyoda.

India under the leadership of prime minister Modi hosting the G20 meeting of world leaders may have for the world passed the test of the ages on November 16, 2023. On that day the G20 with China, India, (and Russia's Lavrov), and the US issued the statement saying-  "The use of threat of using nuclear weapons is inadmissible. The peaceful resolution of conflicts, efforts to address crises, as well as diplomacy and dialogue, are vital. Today's era must not be of war." The words "Today's era must not be of war," were words Modi had stated repeatedly to the Russian president.  In dire situations that it can be conceived that small nuclear weapons with half the destructive capacity as Hiroshima bomb that could be put on a small missile could be used is a new threat. Hennigan in the NYT reports that as Ukrainian forces moved towards Kharkiv and other Russian held territory and were seen as a threat to Russian held Crimea, on October 23, 2023 the Russian minister of defense Sergei Shoigu, contacted the Defense ministers of US, Britain, France and Turkey about Ukrainian fighters it believed planning to launch a dirty bomb -a conventional explosive wrapped in radioactive material- on their own territory to frame Moscow. Hennigan in this NYT report says US Defense Minister Lloyd Austin and Jt. Chief of Staff General Mark Milley, held 3 phone calls in 4 days during this time around October 23, 2023, with their Russian counterparts. By November 16 Indian prime minister Modi and Chinese president Xi had their discussions with the Russian president to prevent accidental nuclear escalation. ...

Trade is just one aspect of the Biden Economic plan. It covers US manufacturing and jobs, Climate Change Action and Renewable Energy, Cost of Living and Wages for workers, Interest rates and inflation, and Capital Allocation with government partnering with the private sector in key industries such as electric cars, solar panels. It has the overwhelming support of most Americans- seven out of 10 Americans favor it polls show. What is described here in the Washington Post as a change from decades of trade policy since Reagan/Bush, Clinton/Obama, is also a response to the loss of key midwestern states by Democrats to Trump in thepresidential election of 2016, and the upheavals for democracy that Biden calls the struggle for the soul of the nation on the White House website. Biden is simply saying that the old policies were a mistake, a huge mistake, and Biden is correcting the Trump response which was loud but lacked the substance that is in the Biden plan through capital allocation in size and government actions to back this up. In this move he now has the support of both Democrats and Republicans. As Greg Ip has pointed out in the WSj no one during the Clinton administration when it engaged China with the World Trade Organization on trade imagined China would replace America as the dominant nation in manufacturing, the size and th scale also affected the climate, the environment in China, and created huge inequalities in the US and China that both nations are trying to correct, Biden in the US and Xi in China. It could even be said these policies were a failure because the size and scale simply overwhelmed everything else with growth rates in China of 12-14%, and the fallout in the near collapse of the economy in the years ahead from hypergrowth.  ...

The US supports F-16 training for Ukrainian pilots. Initial training showed Ukrainian pilots able to learn flying the planes in just 4 months. President Biden made this decision and informed G7 leaders in Hiroshima. Biden also agreed to NATO allies transferring F16s to Ukraine. The changes are coming as Ukraine launches a counter offensive against Russian occupation of parts of the country in the east and south. This report says the idea behind it is that it would bring Russia to the negotiating table to arrange an armistice even though it does not settle the key issues behind the war. It would bring an end to the war through a cessation of hostilities. Tighter controls are also put on economic sanctions to limit Russian ability to finance the war without also seeing its effects.

South Pars Field and Qatar North Field, the largest natural gas fields in the world, are Explained in DW.com. The two fields are divided by a maritime line and form an island divided between Qatar and Iran. Israel attacked the South Pars FIeld and Iran retaliated with an attack on Qatar North Field on March 18, 2026. South Pars field natural gas supplies homes in Iran and is used for fertilizer inside Iran. It also supplies Turkey and Bahrain with natural gas.
