Today their struggles are seen in the next generation, with Alessandro's daughter Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House, and Fred Trump's son Donald Trump in the White House. Maureen Dowd writes in her inimitable style about the U.S. president views being shaped by his wealthy upbringing, and Pelosi's views shaped living with Italian families and immigrants in the post wartime years after 1945, with the trauma suffered in the war.

The chip industry is affected by price declines and overcapacity. No. 3 maker Elpida Memory filed for bankruptcy. Samsung has a 45% share of the market and Hynix Semiconductor has a 21.5% share, with Micron at 12.1%. Elpida Memory's CEO, Mr. Sakamoto says: "we never imagined the yen would become this strong." Plans for an alliance with Micron Technology did not materialize. Elpida was the result of merging the operations of NEC and Hitachi in chipmaking in 1999. Japanese chipmakers subsequently focussed on the high end chips for smartphones, moving production of lower margin chips to Taiwanese operations. Ironically Elpida comes from the Greek word "elpis" meaning hope, and the d for dynamic and a for association.

Good tips for wellbeing and mental health during another election cycle. Amanda Ripley has some good advice in the Washington Post. Move out of a 24 hour news cycle and pause to decide what to read and not to read. Relationships are real and matter, will be there when all this is over years from now. It is about equanimity, maintaining mindfulness. Being a good moral person and teaching your kids the right things, are you doing what is important. Accepting that there was Beaverbrook type journalism before after a British press baron from the last century who loved crises and profited by selling tons of newspapers. Today's versions simply do it using video and podcasts and electronic versions. So it means getting off the rollercoaster ride that profits some press baron. Think in terms of years- a couple of years later there will be 2027 primaries, and five years from now even ten years from now. For someone older one can remember JFK and the New Frontier speeches- was president Harry Truman right to ask John Kennedy not to run because he was too young, would history have turned out better if his energy and zeal for America could have come up later in the nineteen seventies or eighties? Then people worried about too young a candidate, today it is the opposite. The Lord says I am partial to none but supremely dear to me are the wise, in the Bhagavad Gita, in Buddhist texts and in the Bible. And again he says by the raft of knowledge alone you shall go across all sin. Listening well and openness are the road to knowledge and wisdom, leading to mindfulness and peace in 2024 and beyond. ...

The BBC looks at the divisions left behind by the Brexit campaigns and the healing needed for Britain to look to the future. Prime minister Boris Johnson has called for healing divisions. What is meant by "healing," and what is needed to do the healing. To understand this one needs to know why people feel strongly. One of the dangers in describing people, places and regions as "Leave" or "Remain" is that no place is entirely one or the other. Even in the most pro-Brexit places as Lincolnshire a quarter of people opted for Remain. In London called a "Remain" city more Londoners voted to leave the UK than voted for the Remain supporting Mayor. New polling done for the BBC gives one a better understanding of core beliefs. The phrase "influences from other countries and cultures makes Britain a better place to live" was preferred by Remain voters. The phrase "Britain will be stronger in the future if it sticks to its traditions and ways of life" was preferred by Leave voters. Leave people were more likely to celebrate Britain's history, heritage, Christian tradition and national identity. What the BBC points out is that the two ideas are not exclusive. This is also suggested in the percentage of Leave and Remain supporting their core beliefs, which hovers around 50 to 55%. Part of the problem is the way politics is organized to be for or against, part of it from echo chambers and living in relative isolation from people with other ideas, sort of in different bubbles. This means getting everyone out of their comfort zone to embrace what they have "More in Common." Organizations and institutions need to work to bridge divides not only in Britain, but also in the U.S. and Europe, with more people to people interface and more of the conversation shifting to beliefs held "More in Common." Wanting to value one's own culture and traditions and wanting to be part of the global conversation are not mutually exclusive ideas. This is the key point, and a balance has to be found between continuity and change, between respecting traditions and grappling with change, and most importantly listening to unheard or neglected voices.  ...

The rapid de-escalation after strikes on nuclear weapons development  sites was similar to the India- Pakistan war within days the US after strikes of its own on Fordow and Isfahan called for a ceasefire and an end to the war.

In briefings following the US strikes Lt Gen Dan Caine showed extraordinary composure and professional skills that were displayed throughout the crisis unlike anything seen in recent American military history. His rapport and connection with junior military officers was something that gives new confidence to the armed services of the United States.

Macron as president of France does not agree to cohabitation appointing 4 prime ministers over 4 years who are replaced or lose public confidence. The last Bayrou is an experinced politician who tried to get austerity cuts including eliminating 2 public holidays. The Socialist bloc led by Melenchon and Le Pen's Marie Pen bring down Bayrou in a no confidence vote. Following the election of the National Assembly Macron had an opportunity he missed of cohabitation with the Socialists Party bloc and letting its leader Melenchon or someone else in the Socialist Bloc, a more acceptable face to the Macronists form a new government. Instead he has weakened France and it's economy by taking a rigid approach. This is a reversal of his posture during his entry into politics which depended on the Socialists leader president Hollande accepting Macron into his government as Minister for the economy. Macron formed his own party with deft moves to retire the Gaullist and Socialist parties that have ruled France since 1945. Winning the presidency once and barely winning the second time after protests by Yellow Vests on the cost of living and an imperial presidency, the very same problem that Nicholas Sarkozy had of not being close to the people and their concerns about migrants, cost of living and the deindustrialized parts of France, neglect of farmers and rural areas also seen in the US. With this France is in a bit of drift with younger voters looking elsewhere for the future. ...

Shell's new CEO in 2014, Ben Van Beurden, says Shell needs to "sharpen its performance" after a decade of efforts to boost production and heavy spending on long term projects. Shell's 4th quarter 2013 earnings showed profit was 71% less than the prior year as spending surged. Cash flow was exceeded by spending on capital projects, acquisitions and dividends. He told a news conference profit was "too low" and spending too high. Big projects had in his view "convoluted" things for setting targets for cash flow and production. He says Shell will suspend plans to drill in the Arctic and will not drill in Alaska.

H-P sales and profits continue to decline in its core printer and PC businesses. Sales in the printer group were down 5% in the third quarter 2012. Sales in the PC business in the third quarter 2012 declined 14% over the prior year quarter. Sales in the services business declined 6%. Add to this the large charge for $8.8 billion for Autonomy Inc. and investor response was "no mas" for H-P shares. CEO Meg Whitman promised to focus on the core businesses and not let the Autonomy business become a distraction, as Autonomy represents less than 1% of the H-P sales.

The progress of efforts to be inclusive as seen in the UC University of California system of colleges over 25 years has increased the representation of Hispanics to 36%, blacks marginally to 2.5%, and reduced the presence of white Americans to about 18%, while allowing Asians to increase representation to above 40%. As white communities declined with the outshoring of manufacturing the loss of income opportunities was accompanied with less access to education. In this sense it has created problems of negatively impacting non-minority access as it worked to solve a problem of minority representation. The other problem the Supreme Court noted in its decision to stop race based admission or affirmative action was its stereotyping students into groups not treating them with respect for individual character. The bigger problem that has emerged that now overshadows others in its effect on America is the poor access to college for white people particularly white men, over three decades in which manufacturing shipped overseas has destroyed the middle class incomes in manufacturing with whole manufacturing  based communities erased off the map of America. Restoring college opportunity for all Americans, including black people, and including the sons and daughters of generations of white Americans and settlers who built America is the task of this generation, so badly has it been eroded. ...

The stadiums were full, 743,000 people attended venues on July 30, and millions of people lined the streets for the men's and women's cycling road races. "The Games took place amid a great atmosphere, and the police were very well received by both Parisians and tourists, who cooperated well with them," says Axel Ronde of the CFTC police services union. Clarisse Agbegnenou, bronze winner in the women’s 63kg judo category was a member of the police force. 75,000 police, private security and soldiers were used for smoothly carrying out the Olympic games with the Olympics integrated into the city of Paris for opening and closing ceremonies in a way not seen before. It was also intended to revitalize neighborhoods of Paris that had fallen into decline. In this sense the designers aspired for something different and can draw satisfaction that they made the effort and it may leave a lasting value in revitalization of Paris. Yet considering the lack of adequate investment most cities in Europe and the US were getting over three decades of laissez faire economic theory of Reagan/Friedman there is a lot that remains to be done with new investment scale and spirit. ...

To get across to voters how her plan for the economy stands in contrast to the former president in the belief that once people get to know her economic plan they will support her for a better future for America.  There is also the realization that this campaign is compressed into three months August-September-October. The change from Biden to Harris integrating the campaigns had to seamless, and this has been seamless, an essential prerequisite. Another is that it had to be nonstop in every corner of the nation indifferent to rural and urban, red or blue. Nothing matters more than talking to all parts of the nation, to young and old, Republican and Democrat, urban and rural, men and women, to fight for every single vote, and this is happening in this campaign. The essential prerequisite to do this was to do it as the underdog which is how the Harris campaign is being carried out in these last weeks and days. ...

It may come as a surprise that changing retirement age in France faced huge opposition yet was enacted into law for moving it from 62 years to 64  years in 2023,  but was never acted upon in China where it is 60 years. China raises its retirement age for men to 63 years from 60, to be done incrementally a few months at a time till 2040. For women it goes from 50 to 58 years, 55 years for blue collar workers. Why the hesitation. It appears that there is much age related discrimination in China so that many workers feared they would be laid off in their fifties and not get pensions till 60-64 years. This could have created much unrest as it did even in France where there is more discrimination for age than other parts of the EU.  When countries have aging populations do they have an alternative? How could they support pensions at 60 or 62 years as in France and in China? In China the social safety net is weak which leads to more resistance and caution by the government fearing unrest. Yet it is not the best time to tackle this problem as the economy slows, resources are constrained, and there is higher unemployment. ...

U.S. Senator Ben Sasse suggests an alternative approach of simply repealing the Affordable Care Act called Obamacare and replacing it at a later date. This is endorsed by president Trump. This is the new Republican strategy in July 2017. Forty nine senators voted in favor of this repeal in 2015, when president Obama vetoed this legislation. Two more senators are expected to support repeal according to Ben Sasse.

Rewriting the Constitution was one of the demands of protests that lasted for months leading to the election of president Boric. After decades under a constitution written by Gen. Pinochet that favored mining companies and industry Chileans protested the way pensions were organized and the way Chile was run that neglected the working class and middle class families.

The Wall Street Journal offers this exceptional video that looks at what each of the indictments of Mr. Trump mean and how they affect his campaign, and how the campaign strategy of playing to public opinion may or may not work. It is possible that all the four trials could take place during the campaign season and Mr. Trump would have to defend in court as well as conduct his election campaign at the same time, says this video.

This report in the Washington Post says the cancellation of the Trump meeting with Kim Jong-un of North Korea was the result of a lack of detailed planning and lower level meetings before a top level meeting. The more that Trump mentioned "Libya" the more North Korea turned hostile leading to the cancellation by president Trump. North Korea has long seen the Libyan route where Moammar Khaddafi of Libya closed all nuclear facilities as leading to the fall of the dictator and his government.  Experts say the Trump unconventional way of diplomacy is not entirely disproven, yet this shows it has its limits in what can be accomplished. It is also one of highs and lows, moving in one direction and then in the opposite direction in a short period.
