About 53% of the world's lithium is mined in Australia and shipped to China, says this report in the NYT. At the Pilbara mineral mine in rural western Australia the ore is turned into spudomene that is 6% lithium, and is sold at $5700 a ton to China where it is refined into lithium that goes into batteries for EV cars. Australia is changing its mindset to refine more of it in Australia for battery supplies and how and where lithium is exported says this report.

A study by Blanchard and Bernanke shows energy prices and supply chain constraints were key factors in creating the surge in inflation that happened in 2022. President Biden's payments to these workers gave them enough room to make a definite choice that they would not take the risks during the pandemic and the stress and opted for shifting to other jobs. Employers struggled to fill vacancies and raised wages in response. To reduce inflation the Fed opted to raise rates to slow the demand for goods and services in the economy which has led to a moderating of inflation from the high of 7% in 2022 to falling below 5% by April 2023. Fed chairman Powell's aggressive attitude to inflation was based on not letting an inflationary psychology set in, that could damage the interests of workers and families who had already suffered from the pandemic's effects. This is where we are today as the economy adjusts to the fight against climate change, investments in renewable energy and infrastructure, and efforts to reduce the deficit by president Biden in a way that reduces the widening gaps and social divisions in society.   ...

Applied Materials, a maker of machines that make computer chips, will invest $4 billion over 7 years in a new research center in Sunnyvale, California. Part of this investment comes from federal subsidies in president Biden's CHIPS Act to increase American semiconductor production inside the US. The investment will create jobs for 2000 engineers. The idea is to build an ecosystem for research and experimentation in Silicon Valley close to other research centers and universities so that the cost of production can be brought down with the access to latest technologies in usable form.

China's efforts to build its own core technologies in chip production leads to a ban on American manufacturer Micron for supplying China's chip needs. This allows Chinese companies to fill the need as China pursues its own Made in China model similar to America's Made in America model that president Biden is taking up to catch up with Taiwan. The title is a misnomer as there is no clash as such with the US when countries are developing their own safer supply chains as the US is doing and working with its European allies on this. In fact the competition is with Taiwan, in an effort to correct a mistaken decision for the US under the pressure of laissez faire advocates in the US to not let the federal government support American chip makers that over two decades has created this huge gap with Taiwan. Laissez faire means to leave alone, which came at the wrong time when competing nations including Taiwan and South Korea were supporting their chipmakers aggressively and covertly and presenting their costs as something the US could not compete with. US president Biden has every intention to correct his and the Biden CHIPS Act is only the first step to do this.  ...
