Safety checks at Norfolk Southern are the subject of this report in the WSJ. The derailment of a freight train leading to spill of toxic chemicals in Ohio on Feb 3, 2023, led to concern about the safety practices at American railroads in the efforts to cut costs. The National Transportation Safety Board has opened a probe into the safety culture and practices of Norfolk Southern. One practice called PSR or precison scheduled railroading has been used by railroads in America to cut costs. This means fewer employees, longer freight trains as long as 3 miles, and fewer locomotives. The result is that employees count went down from 159,000 in 2011 to 115,000 in 2021 a drop of 28% even when freight dropped by 11%. This increased profits resulting in higher dividends and stock buybacks, with a heavier workload and less time off  even for sick days until a threatened strike. President Biden intervened to set a new pay and work deal and an element of fairness for workers. ...

Three new cable stay bridges are coming up in New York, the first between Queens and Brooklyn replaces the old Kosciuszko bridge and is already constructed, the second replaces the Tappan Zee across the Hudson river just 10 miles north of the Bronx, the third  replaces the Goethals between Staten Island and Elizabeth, New Jersey. The cable-stay design is becoming popular because of its aesthetic looks and because its easier and economical to construct. This gives a face lift to the city. Much of the work is done under the leadership of the State Department of Transportation, New York State Thruway Authority, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The Brooklyn Bridge built in 1883 has this kind of cable design but from an earlier era.

EU and Netherlands laws limiting these emissions would require a much smaller population of cows. To meet the cuts in emissions Dutch dairy farmers will have to significantly reduce their farming operations and number of cows in each farm. Netherlands is a major dairy farming nation with 8.2 billion euros of dairy exports including Edam and Gouda cheeses and 13.8 billion kilos of milk.  Dutch farmers have launched nitrogen protests for 2 years saying their livelihood is threatened. In a nation of 17 million people about 40% supports the farmers, but this support is declining with increasing impact of droughts and fires, impact on agriculture and transportation on rivers, takes its toll on Europe and the rest of the world. Netherlands has set aside $25 billion to aid farmers making the transition to a smaller nitrogen footprint. Biodiesel is having a tougher time to win acceptance as the costs of making it in Europe have gone up and its much costlier to make than regular diesel. And their are costs to the environment of making more biodiesel as it involves more use of land and water resources. Biodiesl costs $1440 per ton or $4.80 per gallon compared to $840 per ton or $2.80 per gallon for regular crude oil based diesel. This is because the prices of most of the crops used to make biodiesel have doubled and oil companies are finding that it is too expensive to buy compared to fossil fuel. Europe only uses 2 % of transportation fuels in the form of nonfossil fuels like biodiesel and the goals of getting to 10% of transportation fuels for nonfossil fuel is now more elusive than ever now that biodiesel is not taking off.

Three events September 29 Sunday to October 5 Saturday described as "week from hell" for the Biden White House in this report. President Biden can feel a huge sigh of relief for having overcome in each event. The hurricane Helene devastating a swath of western North Carolina, parts of rural Georgia, and western Florida. The president was working round the clock for relief efforts and visiting the flooded regions. Then there was the large missile strike by Iran over Israel following its bombing of Lebanon. This was averted using US missile defense. President Biden supported the dockworkers efforts to have shipping ports owners in Asia and Europe to share huge profits with dockworkers.  All the time the hard work at the White House and agencies for relief efforts paid off. And Zient, Buttigieg, Transportation Secretary Brainard at NEC, were on the phone with port owners overseas at 5.30 am Thursday to setup a stopgap agreement till Jan 15 for settlement.
