The most eco-friendly Athletes Village of any Olympics is finished in time in the poorer suburb of Ile-St-Dennis in Paris, France. French president Macron opens the Athletes Village facility in this video in FR24. 40 lowrise tower blocks are shown and they will house 14,000 Olympic athletes. This is the first time a 'sober' model is being used by reducing the cost- using existing facilities, recycling, re-use, and putting climate change low carbon technologies. The organizer Nicholas Ferrand says the project was done by using the best know-how in France on how to best respond to the challenge of urbanization in 21st century. It uses low carbon concrete, wood structures and geothermal heating to cut carbon emissions in half compared to conventional methods. It is located by the river Seine in a regeneration effort in the economically deprived suburb of Seine-St-Dennis. The suburb also holds the national stadium and is the poorest and most crime ridden of France.

It has fallen behind as competitors launched phones with new features and sleeker designs like the iPhone from Apple and Nokia's new line of phones, with a whole set of new features and careful attention to customers future needs, constantly staying ahead of the curve. Motorola has had one shot hits like the recent Razr phone but has not had the management vision, leadership and structure to keep ahead of the changing customer needs and development of new technologies- which together have created new kinds of phones and new designs for different market segments in different countries. The companies successful in such an industry have to have mangement direction, capabilities and drive and speed to keep coming up with new features and combinations of features for different sets of customers in different countries. New technologies mean faster internet access, iPhone type features, exchanging pictures, being able to see internet information on their phones and changes every year or two years. The nature of this industry requires companies to stay ahead of technologies and customers, and have good people on the field who can help you understand the changing markets in each region. This includes designers and technology access, with execution abilities and people to do it who can put it all together, again and again each time the customers needs change and the market takes a new turn. Nokia has in contrast to Motorola stayed ahead of the game. Even if it has missed a step it has regained the momentum quickly, and set up a structure of people that can generate the new phones customers want before other companies. Here Motorola is having a free fall in market share and no product to meet the competition at least not till the end of this year, a long time in this fast paced industry....

The fire with burning of 460 tons of lead from the roof and spire led to scattering of dust to other parts of Paris, to neighborhoods, schools, day care centers, according to this report in the New York Times. The government plans to rebuild the cathedral in 5 years, but this report says not enough attention has gone to the issue of contamination from the fire, and the public has very little idea of the potential dangers to health.

The Oxford second generation vaccine is being developed to handle several strains of the mutating virus at the same time. The Oxford team developing the vaccine is following what the vaccine is doing, in the way it is mutating, to develop the new vaccine.

The Oxford vaccine uses a virus that has been modified to contain a piece of genetic code from the coronavirus. When injected it causes human cells to produce the coronavirus spike protein, which the immune system learns to recognize. A single vaccine would contain different lines of benign virus, each containing the genetic code for the spike protein of a different variant so that the immune system can recognize several mutated coronavirus strains at the same time. This is also how the flu vaccine works. 

Quick regulatory approval is expected with much smaller trials that would be followed by immunization shots given in September 2021 when winter arrives.

This report in the WSJ shows Cubans lacking water for washing, sanitation, and having electricity blackouts or electricity for only 4 hours a day. Cuba lacks money to buy oil. The economy has long been shown to be frozen in the past without the technological change seen in other countries in the developing world. It shows the only model that works is one of good governance, access to US and European capital and technology for modernization, close relations with the US, building domestic knowledge base and engineers for  modernization, as sine qua non essental conditions in the Modern World since 1950. China and India tried under Mao and Nehru under socialist regimes but failed. The Monroe Doctrine is not for the US, it is an essential pre condition for countries in the western hemisphere on which the other essential conditions are laid to create modern societies. China and India with the essential conditions achieving modernization under Modi and Deng and his successors. It is true that Cuban dictator Batista's regime was a bad one in the 1950's, yet the answer is not to put in its place or as a reaction to this an idealistic version which like human nature is prone to corruption and decline, but build on sound and firm ground foundations tsuch as these essential conditions and sine qua non that stand the test of time and are good for the American continent. ...
