Ford gains market share in California, as Toyota and Honda's share of the market declines. Ford's market share is up 2 percentage points on the east and west coasts compared to 5 years ago, according to R.L. Polk data. The Ford Fusion sales for the first half of 2013 are up 18% over the prior year and exceed 300,000. Growth in the coastal U.S. markets comes from the 2013 Fusion, the C-Max, hybrids, and the redesigned Escape. Cars and crossovers are especially important in coastal markets. In the past Ford depended mostly on SUV sales in the midwestern markets with imports dominant in coastal markets. This is now changing with models like the Fusion and hyrids introduced by Ford. With it the image of Ford is also changing, as buyers in California are among the most affluent and culturally influential in setting trends.

The economic crisis is global because with a few exceptions like Germany the housing prices have seen a bubble around the world, worse than in the US in places like Ireland and the UK, and similiar to Florida and California in Spain, and also in places like China and India whwere a stock market bubble helped sustain housing price increases. In China and India the crisis comes in the shape of higher inflation, food prices, and huge stock market declines, along with the housing declines, and lower economic growth as China shifts from an export model to domestic consumption letting a third of the low cost factories in Guangdong province close down. Look for serious effects and global economic slowdown from a series of intertwined crisis housing credit and in Asia stock markets.

Carl Schramm of the Kauffman Foundation which supports entrepreneurship says Venture Capital Funds have failed in recent years. With less and less of the partner's capital as low as 1% and more money from pension funds and other sources with short term pressures for performance, and the VC funds own 2-20 model (taking 2% each year as management fees and 20% of profits at time of IPO's) these funds have gone more into keeping companies only for afew years and selling them off rather than nurturing for the long run. In an earlier era the VC funds tried to nurthure the companies and did not take in so much in fees and profits. Today they are flipping more like the private equity firms do.And with the poor results turned in by the funds Schramm points out that returns are negative since 1997 for many of these funds. So VC funds are not supporting the new investments in biotech and clean energy even though there is a big need for investments. VC funds invested only $4.8 billion in 637 companies in the 3rd quarter of 2009 down 33% from $7.2 billion and 994 businesses in 2008 acccording to Price WaterhouseCoopers and the National Venture Capital Association....

In his resignation speech to the House of Commons UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting told the House on May 20, 2026. He calls for bold action based on a bold vision not simply treading water.  "I left the government because we are in the fight of our lives against nationalism, and it is a fight that we are currently losing." "Unless we change course, we risk handing the keys of No 10 to Reform, and I do not want that on our consciences." "For the first time in our history, nationalists are in power in every corner of the United Kingdom." "Scottish and Welsh nationalism represents an existential threat to the future integrity of the United Kingdom." "And Reform UK represent a threat to the values and ideals that have made this country great." “Never waste a minute – that’s been my mantra in government, and it’s why I don’t believe our party has time to waste in government treading water,” Streeting told MPs. “The Labour party was elected to deliver real change. We still can.”   ...

The latest version of the Galaxy smartphones is the Galaxy Note 8, which replaces the Galaxy Note 7. The Galaxy Note 7 had fire prone batteries which led to a costly recall costing about $6.5 billion. The Galaxy 8 has an "infinity" display that covers the entire front of the phone, for 6.3 inches. It has a dual lens camera and other features to match the iPhone 7. The Galaxy Note 8 effort was led by mobile chief D.J. Koh, who told his engineers not to hesitate in pushing the frontiers of technology, pointing out that Samsung could compete only if it was not afraid to innovate. Actions taken by Koh to prevent quality failures include signing 3 years instead of 1 year contracts with suppliers. The crisis with the Galaxy Note 7 forced Samsung to have its teams work with closer coordination. Samsung's sales have increased with the 6% increase in the market in the second quarter. Samsung had 22% of total shipments, compared to Apple's 11%, and Huawei Technologies 11%, according to Strategy Analytics. Samsung had 20 million shipments of Galaxy S8 and the S8+ since April 2017. A cross-referencing initiative by the new government of Mario Monti in Italy called the "income-o-meter," will be setup in the next few months. Under this initiative the government will cross reference different transactions and compare bank accounts with declared income to take action against tax evasion. Tax evasion is so widespread in Italy that an estimated $150 billion is lost in uncollected taxes. This would help Italy bring down its defict and reduce the debt burden in the current crisis. Attilio Befera, director of Agenzia delle Entrate, Italy's internal revenue service, says that the new cross-referencing initiative will prevent someone from declaring income of $26,000 and buying real estate worth $1.3 million. Tax officials say that in a country with 2.5 million luxury cars, only 2% of 41 million taxpayers showed an annual income of more than $260,000.

The Economist cites figures showing Canada lost 500,000 manufacturing jobs since 2005, with employment in manufacturing down to 1.7 million by 2013. From 2000 to 2013 manufacturing's share of GDP declined from 18% to 10%. This situation is shown by the decaying manufacturing towns seen in Ontario. About 500,000 manufacturing jobs were lost between 2005 and 2013, as the price of oil increased to the $100-$120 range and the Canadian currency was overvalued, leaving the Canadian economy more dependent on energy exports. Some of the auto manufacturing supplier base has shifted from the midwest to southern U.S. states, reducing the attractiveness of Ontario for manufacturing investment. Overvalued currencies have hurt the manufacturing sector of commodity producing countries dependent on exports of mining products or oil, especially Brazil and Canada. The depreciation of the Canadian currency in 2014-2015 may not help, as many of these jobs are not likely to return.

Years of neglect under the Mubarak government have led to a situation in which Egypt imports 80% of its wheat supplies and agricultural products. Corruption in the sale of fertile land to developers for building homes, lack of electric supplies to farmers to pump water, lack of investment in infrastructure and irrigation, and the liberalization efforts which led to farmers diversifying from wheat into more profitable products such as fruit and flowers, have led to the current situation.

Davidoff describes the hype in Silicon Valley that leads to soaring valuations- hype about Nest includes founder Fadell's reference to his vision for home thermostats that would change the world. All the participants benefit says Davidoff, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, venture capital firms and firms acquired such as Nest. Nest was acquired by Google for $3.1 billion, when it would have been valued at about $2 billion before Google showed interest. The hype lets Google present itself as the company of the future, and boost its image, which means a lot in getting investors to support the huge valuations.
