Neil Irwin of the NYT provides some positive news on U.S. housing. Access to housing at affordable prices is improving as more home are built at the lower end. In July home buyers bought single family houses at the annual rate of 654,000, highest since 2007, according to government reports. This is an increase of 31% over 2015. Builders are building new houses at the rate of one million homes a year every month since April 2015. Census Bureau report shows median sale price at 294,600 for new homes in July down from $310,500, largely because more homes are being supplied which is good for first time buyers. And home price increases are moderate, about 5% a year for the last 2 years, based on S&P/Case Shiller home price index composite of 20 cities. The home ownership rate is now at 62.9%, and though this is down from 69% in 2016, this is close to the 63-64% that prevailed during the period from 1965 to the eighties.  It could move higher as the economy improves and supply at the lower end increases further, but other factors are present such as delaying buying a house as student debt has soared, or not buying at all because of lack of affordable prices. Investment in housing is likely to increase- at 3.8% of GDP it is still below the 4.6% average since 1947.   ...

Penney's sales fell by 20% in its fiscal first quarter for 2012. Penney is going through a transformation from a promotional retailer to one that focuses on everyday value and presentation, under Ron Johnson, former Apple executive for retail stores. As part of the restructuring Penney will reduce staff by 15% at its Plano, Texas headquarters. Penney showed a loss of $163 million for the quarter, including restructuring costs.

British Airways and Iberia Airlines made the winning bid for British Midland International (BMI) from Lufthansa for 172.5 million pounds. The acquisition is only for BMI's mainland carrier which serves Europe, the Middle East and Africa. This gives British Airways 56 additional daily takeoff and landing slots at Heathrow airport where it has 45% of commercial airtraffic. Lufthansa paid 223 million pounds for BMI in 1999 and when it purchased the remaining 50% of founder Michael Bishop's share in the airline in 2008.

In 20 months the Trump administration approved 1617 generic drugs, 81 a month on average or a 17% increase over the preceding 20 months. Profit margins are thin about 1% in a very competitive pricing market.  Metrics are based on revenue per user of $9 per user from an installed base of 190 million smartphone users, spending 54 minutes a day using Xiaomi's app, game and other services, or 20% of the phone use time. Revenue per user comes from advertising, and from commissions on the apps and games it sells to its user base. In 2015 Xiaomi had a loss, in 2016 sales dropped, in 2017 new products led to a resurgence in the market with sales increasing 68%. As Xiaomi goes into its IPO, experts say much of the $10 billion from the IPO could go into reinvestment as Xiaomi reinvents itself and moves into other internet business. ...
