Health insurance premiums for family plans increased by 9% in 2011 according to a survey by Kaiser Family Foundation. A similiar survey by Mercer showed premium increases around 6%. Another change is that health insurance plans are becoming less comprehensive and deductibles are higher, with higher copays and employees contributing more to premiums.

The Treasury Department Report to U.S. president Reagan in Nov. 1984 offers an approach based on fairness that has great relevance to today's effort at tax reform. This approach resulted in the the Tax Reform Act of 1986. Similiar families with the same income were expected to pay the same amount in taxes in the interests of fairness. The tax revenues were set without any loopholes or exemptions, and the question was asked how much does marginal rates of everyone have to go up so that a particular group gets its exemption or loophole supported by its lobbyist?

The Australian government forecasts lower GDP growth in 2012- dropping to 3.25% fro 4% earlier. The government plans spending cuts of 11.5 billion Australian dollars over the next 4 years, which will further affect economic growth.
