A revised pact with Columbia will require that Columbia revise its laws to include specific protections for union leaders, activists and workers trying to organize or form a union, and protect aginst actions that adversely affect fundamental workers' rights. This is meant to take into account a history of violence against labor organizers in Columbia, and to make the trade deal with Columbia more acceptable to U.S. unions. This also makes it possible to move forward with passage of the free trade agreements with S. Korea and Panama.

Lower oil prices are reflected in the lower foreign trade numbers for the U.S., but something else is happening in the way foreign trade is declining globally. Citigroup Economist Wieting estimates that the drop in exports in October if sustained across the quarter would have taken 2.2 points from GDP, a bigger hit than declining consumer spending that makes up 70% of GDP.

How Hiroshi Harunari is changing the way Mitsubishi is doing business. He personally answers emails from employees and dealers from 7 to 9 am every day to know what frustrated employees and dealers are thinking and have to deal with. He flies into Dallas and personally drives an Outlander to dealers in Dallas, San Antonio, Austin and other cities to talk to them and listen to what they are struggling with and what their customers are telling them. In 2 months in early 2006 his first 2 months on the job, Hiroshi visited 139 Mitsubishi dealerships in 29 states. He has launched a dealer co-op program to help dealers with advertising (as dealers had suggested) and Mitsubishi uses an upbeat advertising slogan " the next 25 years begin today" suggesting a completely new way of doing things. Hiroshi came from the Mitsubishi Group which financed struggling Mitsubishi Motors with $3 billion infusion after Daimler Chrysler pulled out in 1995. As part of the new plan for Mitsubishi it decided to get out of the old situation where younger drivers with bad credit had been targeted resulting in bad consumer loan losses. It now targeted more financially able customers with the Lancer sedan. It had Merrill Lynch do the financing of customer loans. For the year ending March 31, 2007 Misubishi sold 124,000 cars up 8% over the previous year with sales at dealerships increasing 24%, reversing a 4 year decline in sales, and pulling Mitsubishi USA to a $5 million profit. In 2005 Mitsubishi had lost nearly $2 billion so its quite a reversal. Hiroshi says he had to show that he was ready to pick up the chestnut from the flames, that he had the courage and energy to go out and listen to hundreds of dealers and customers and employees in 29 states in the USA and act immediately to satisfy their concerns. ...

The last days and the last hours for Wachovia, as Robert Steel- formerly at the Treasury, who became CEO at Wachovia in July 2008- tried to save Wachovia as its share price plummeted. The immediate cause of the crisis was an imminent downgrade of ratings of Wachovia by the credit ratings agencies just as as the bank had billions of dollars in debt coming due this week, and the collapse of WaMu that created crisis conditions for Wachovia with its large holdings of so called toxic assets. Steel tried to negotiate a deal with Wells Fargo's Kovacevich, who initially offered a price in the tens of billions (about $20 billion), and said he could do it on his own without FDIC help. Then on the last day he backed off saying he had concerns for some of Wachovia loan portfolios. At this point Fed, FDIC and Treasury officials were huddled together in meetings to figure out what should be done. Steel was in conversations with Citigroup's Pandit at this point, and FDIC offered to guarantee losses on bad loan portfolios of Wachovia above $42 billion, in exchange Citi would give the FDIC warrants on Citi stock and preferred shares worth $12 billion as an insurance payment. The price at which Citigroup acquired Wachovia at this point was nearly $2 billion. One thing remained. What about the bondholders. WaMu's bondholders were wiped out, so this time Treasury did not want to rattle the credit markets further. It needed someone to shoulder Wachovia's $54 billion debt, which Citigroup at this point agreed to do. Citi gets a large number of Wachovia branches and depositors with this deal, combining the $393 billion of deposits of Wachovia with its $208 billion in deposits, making it the 3rd largest bank in the USA in terms of deposits after Bank of America and Chase. The factor that push oil to test new thresholds. How the value of the dollar against other currencies such as euro affects all this. Goldman's year end forecast of $85 per barrel with a risk of it hitting $90 because of poor supply- demand situation. The dollar declined 6% against the euro since the beginning of this year 2007, so this affects the purchasing power of the oil producing countries as oil prices are denominated in US$, and it affects the dollar cost of imported oil into the US because it takes more dollars to buy the same amount of oil. Other factors affecting demand are the credit crunch affecting smaller oil companies exploration budgets, higher prices have not yet affected demand globally, the lower level of inventories at this time compared with last year, and the upcoming hurricane season in the USA.

Major policy changes for Wen Biao's second term as Prime Minister with the reorganization of government ministries to streamline them to focus on new policy priorities of reducing pollution, becoming energy efficient, improving the environment, and providing better housing and health care services to migrants and the poorer sections of society. How will this work in execution and in practice remains a question. there will be a new cabinet level Ministry for the Environment.
