Kristof of the NYT says about American unions that the basic reality is that with the decline of trade unions in the last two decades workers got stiffed. The wages of new auto workers at $17 an hour dropped to levels close to the minimum wage of $16 in California in 2022. At $34,000 a year these workers were below the Federal Poverty Level for families of $35,000 to $40,000. Workers lost dignity and standards of living declined. After 15 years of covering the crisis of America's working class he says he lost his disdain for unions, and he has come to believe that unions are not just good for the workers but also for America itself. Unions he says are imperfect just as capitalism is imperfect, but essential for America.

One can also take inspiration from other cuisines- Lebanese, Israeli, Mediterranean, Italian, Japanese, Indian. Plant based including millets are anything but boring. In fact Indian cooking experts used millet and plant based in the G20 cuisine in India recently for all guests. There is a lot of room for creativity in the cooking.

Sanchez needs support from 24 of 25 members of parliament from separatist parties of Catalonia to reach the 176 he needs to form a government. The UAW added 7000 workers to the 18000 already on strike at Ford, GM, Stellantis.The UAW is making progress in its talks on Stellantis on cost of living adjustments and outsourcing, and says it will spare Stellantis from more walkouts. Stellantis also has the least hourly workers of the three US auto companies. Stellantis has operations in Europe and gets half of its profit outside the US. The UAW is also not stopping work at the largest SUV and pickup truck plants that make the most money for the auto companies. The idea is to do only what is needed to achieve its goals of fair pay and benefits for the auto workers.

As the national airline of Australia it is 51% owned by domestic investors. It was founded in 1920, nationalized in 1947, and private investors were slowly given a stake in the airline after 1990. Quantas received $900 million in government aid during the pandemic. Quantas management illegally outsourced jobs for 1700 baggage handlers to prevent union action. In the last year it made $1.8 billion in profits. Yet its reputation has suffered from its handling of baggage handlers and workers demand for higher wages.
