One of the problems facing the Republican People's Party, the CHP, is how to connect with religious voters. CHP is the party that is most closely associated with modern Turkey's founder, Kemal Ataturk. CHP was the main party in Turkey till the recent dominance of the AKP Party in elections. AKP drew support from the more religious and rural population in the parts of Turkey outside cities such as Ankara and Istanbul. CHP rarely identified itself with street protest and remained aloof from ordinary people making it hard for it to contest elections against the AKP - winning Ankara and Istanbul but losing the elections in the last decade. The AKP also allied itself with Turkey's Ottoman heritage and appealed to nationalist sentiment against a conservative aloof CHP leading to a split in Turkey between the secular urban and the religious minded more rural people. CHP also did not work with minorities such as the Kurds to build a broader coalition. This is changing with the march from Ankara to Istanbul led by CHP leader Kilicdaroglu. The march came after the justice system appeared to be allied with president Erdogan, and a 25 year sentence was given to one of Kilicdaroglu's deputies. Erdogan now appoints the judges in the judiciary and the crackdown on the opposition since the failed coup of 2016, has led to a sense that Turkey is now run as a one party state. An estimated 1.5 million Turks participated in the rally in Istanbul, according to DW, showing that the opposition is forming to the arbitrary rule since the emergency powers assumed by the president. For the last decade Erdogan and the AKP Party formed the government. What changed since 2016 is the new constitution that gives new powers to the president and the arbitrary rule since the crackdown on the opposition that intensified after 2014, and which has increased since the failed coup in 2016.  ...

Eiji Toyoda, a cousin of Toyota founder, Kiichiro Toyoda, headed the company in a crucial period of its growth in the sixties and seventies. He was president for 1967-1982, was chairman till 1992 and honorary chairman till 1999. During this period going back to the 1950's he set the stage for Toyota to introduce its efficient production systems and rapid growth in the U.S. market following the success of the Corolla in 1968. He passed away in 2013 at the age of 100.

Israel's Yesh Atid (there is a future) party came in second with 19 seats after the party of prime minister Netanyahu in Jan 2013 Israeli elecions. Yair Lapid helped organize the middle class protests for social justice in the summer of 2011. He founded the Yesh Atid party to fight for better opportunities for the struggling middle class. Many of the votes came from Tel Aviv. Lapid writes a column for the newspaper Yediot Aharonot under the title, "Where's the money?" He writes in the newspaper: "This is the big question asked by Israel's middle class, the same sector on whose behalf I am going into politics. Where's the money? Why is it that the productive sector, which pays the taxes, fufills its obligations, performs reserve duy and carries the entire country on its back, doesn't see the money?" The summer protests were about an Israeli middle class that is falling behind like the middle class in the U.S. Yair Lapid started as a print journalist and went on to anchor the Channel 2 Friday evening news. His father is a Holocaust survivor from Budapest, Hungary, who went on to become Justice minister. Unlike his father who was strongly secular, Yatid's support comes from all parts of Israeli society including the ultra-religious, and is mainly focussed on the middle class. ...

Comments about Edward Whitacre, who put AT&T together after becomng CEO of Southwestern Bell, and built the new business around cellular, wireless and internet services once the long distance market collapsed. Says board member and leader Kent Kresa, of Henderson and Whitacre, "they are both open to the ideas and opinions of others. I think there will be a good dialogue." Says a colleague Haskell Monroe, on the AT&T board, " he faces the facts, he looks for the truth and he is a person who takes responsibility for his decisions." IMV architecture for rugged vehicles and the Hilux brand of vehicles for emerging markets, are two favorable factors that Toyota hopes will generate half a million more sales than the old Hilux line. Toyota has spent $1.4 billion on building plants in India, Indonesia, Argentina and S. Africa and other countries to develop the new vehicles with new chassis, engines and other parts made in developing countries. These plants say chief engineer Hoskawa help reduce costs by 20-25% for the Hilux line of rugged vehicles with new chassis. But a port strike in India which makes the manual transmitssions, and a problem at the plant in Indonesia which makes gasoline engines- which are then shipped to plants for assembly in South Africa and Argentina- could cause problems. To cushion against such events Toyota keeps 2 weeks supply of engines and other parts in Thailand.

This WSJ editorial points out that the current corruption drive in China is opaque and politically driven. Transparency International in its Corruption Perceptions Index shows China at 36 points having dropped by 20 places because of the lack of transparency in tackling corruption. Whistleblower protection should be part of an effecive drive says Transparency International. Also needed is an independent judiciary, free speech and the rule of law, institutions China has still to develop.

GM's decision to close the NUMMI plant, a joint venture with Toyota that makes the Pontiac Vibe which is being discontinued, the Corolla, and the Tacoma truck. Its a way to reduce excess capacity for Toyota but also is a sensitive point as Toyoa has pledged to keep plants open. Toyota may decide to make the Prius at NUMMI. About 4600 workerts are employed in the San Francisco Bay area at the NUMMI plant.

With Toyota facing amajor crisis the company speeded up the appointment of the new CEO, the grandson of Kiichiro Toyoda, who founded the automaker as it diversified from its textile automated looms in the prewar years. Note the statement by Koji Endo, analyst of Credit Suisse in Tokyo, that he expects Toyota to lose up to three times the 1.7 billion loss of the current fiscal year ending March 31, in the next fiscal year of 2009. This suggests that a lot will be happening at Toyota as major actions to reduce capacity and to improve management, reduce bureaucracy and speedup decisionmaking are taken by the new President. Especially so as Akio Toyoda, the new CEO, is different from the tradiitonal CEO's who have come up through manufacturing and not educated in the U.S. He will not have the same patience and comfort factor with Toyota's bureaucracy as these other CEO's like Watanabe who preceded him. By pushing the transition up the other elders like Shoichiro Toyoda may want to give Akio time to prepare for the tough decisions he will have to make, and to setup his own management team as early as possible....
