By 2010 sales from China India Brazil and Middle East will total $50 billion compared to 30 billion today. thst is an increase of 67% over 3 years. Power is a big chunk of this in addition there are aircraft engines and health care equipment. See the other article on middle east growth July 19, 2007 WSJ. The corn crop estimate for 2008 by USDA economists is 13.1 billon bushels vs 12.1 in 2007 a drop of 7.3%. Ethanol industry will use 4 billion bushels of this from the crop collected in autumn. This corn crop will be used by food companies into late 2009 for everything fom feeding cattle and pigs and dairy cows to making soft drinks and breakfast cereal and a host of other fod products. USDA forecasts a price of $5.50 per bushel for 2008 compared to $4.40 for 2007. USDA expects Consumer Price Index for food to go up 5% in 2008. Other experts expect it to be higher and go into 2009. At the same time the FDA forecasts that for grain the world will produce more grain in 2008 than it will use helping build stockpiles for wheat and rice. Reason for this is that governments are responding to current shortages by attracting more investment and freeing up more land for food production. In the US land will shift from corn and cotton to more profitable crops like wheat and soyabeans.

Interview with Jim Press by Michelle Krebs of Business Week. It gives deep insights into the thinking of Toyota- its approach to the automobile business and the marketing of its cars. Being admired by the new generationof buyers, the perception of Toyota in the mind of buyers is important to Toyota. It will try to be strong in each community. The example of San Antonio is given so its roots will stretch deeper. Press tell Krebs that being part of the community is important for Toyota. See the related article by Ed Wallace, Business Week, May 25, 2006. Press says attrition is one of the reasons GM lost its high regard and perception with buyers. By that he means the older generations, two generations, that respected General Motors for its innovation and contributions, has passed away. This is replaced by younger people and a new generation which does not have the same recorded perceptions in its memory. In fact it may see just the opposite, in terms of Detroits attitude perceived as arrogant, in terms of fuel efficiency perceived as wasteful, in terms of quality perceived as not upto the higher bar set by the Japanese competition of Toyota and Honda. Toyota does not look like a pioneer in the ethanol vehicle field, so GM and Ford have a opening here they can use. Toyota will continue to set the bar higher on Quality. And this is not a company about to be complacent about its success . Press sees Toyota's success stemming partly from the failure of GM and Ford to maintain market share and only partly from its own better qualities. One of Toyota's goals is to keep increasing local content so it can show that its a truly American company to this new generation....

More details about Akio Toyoda and his father Shoichiro Toyoda. Yoshi Inaba is expected to be akey advisor and Shoichiro will be advising his son, as the idea is to mentor him for the new position while the elder Shoichiro still is in good health. Akio is hands on, and likes to drop in without any publicity, anonymously, to look into how things are going and see for himself. He did this at an Ann Arbor dealership last summer, and has dropped in on Jim Lentz, a senior executive in the Americanoperations in the same way. He is unpretentious and can mix with younger exectutives and talks directly in English. He is expected to be more involved in the global operations of Toyota, to travel widely and introduce diversity into Toyota's executive ranks, which have remained Japan centric all these years for a company that is so global.

The Republican party (GOP) chances with Trump as the candidate in 2024 are seen with much skepticism by Karl Rove in the WSJ. Republicans need to keep the presidential field of candidates not too crowded for too long, as pluralities in primaries led to Trump winning a large share of delegates even with about one third of the vote in the early primaries for the 2020 election. Another challenge is the work of Trump supporting leaders in states such as Michigan who want to select delegates by convention and not through primaries. Ron de Santis, Governor of Florida, is seeking the Republican nomination, and faces a strong challenge from the former president. De Santis, 44 years, is from Dunedin, Florida, His mother was a nurse and his father installed Nielsen TV rating boxes, with great-great grandparents immigrating from Italy Benevento, Avellino) in 1904. He studied history at Yale and went to Harvard Law School, Navy Justice School after joining the Navy. De Santis was elected to the US Congress in 2014 and 2016 where he served as the chariman of the sub committee on National Security. He founded the Freedom Caucus in these years. In 2018 he ran for Governor of Florida winning by 0.4%, running again in 2022 he won by about 20 percentage points. ...

The port of Long Beach which takes in 20% of the container shipping of the USA,, and is next only to Los Angeles port in container shipping, is becoming a story of two economies, the American and the Chinese. Thousands of cars from Toyota, Nissan and Mercedes are piling on port property turning it into one huge parking lot, as dealers across the country say they have no need for them, and piles of paper and metal baled together to be shipped back on these ships to China to be recycled into cardboard for export boxes are also piling up as China no longer needs them. The drivers who drive the trucks are also being laid offf and looking for new jobs, which are signs that a deeper economic downturn is underway and the the Detroit automakers GM and Ford CEO's who told the Banking committee that they are making their estimates for 2009 on the basis of a 13- 14 million vehicle sales year may be in for another rude shock. The figure for the last quarter may be running at 10 million, and if this continues into 2009 as its expected to do, even the producton of cars after accelerated plant closures may have nowhere to go in 2009. Which is why there are so many questions about what is going on in the auto industry and so much need for candour and frank discussion that was missing in the evasiveness apparent in the Senate hearings on November 18, 2008, as CEO and union president skirted around the issues and senators failed to ask many other questions like these on what is happening on demand as well as many others....

A new CBS-New York Times opinion poll in June 2012 shows 44% of those polled approve the job the Supreme Court is performing and about three fourths say the decisions of justices of the court are influenced by their political and personal views. By comparison only 15% approve of the job done by the U.S. Congress in the most recent poll. Only one in eight say the justices make decisions based solely on legal analysis. About 60% say they agree that life tenure for justices is bad because it gives too much power to justices. On the health care law two thirds of those polled say they hope some or all of the 2010 Obama health care law is overturned.

Modifications proposed for Agnipath recruitment to the Indian armed services include full healthcare benefits and pension benefits for the scheme. The government has presented a fact vs. myth explanation to provide a clear understanding of the intent of the scheme to reflect a younger population and integrated India without the regimental bias towards caste and region present since British times. Job security is always a concern in India. The better technically trained and better financed Agniveer recruit would have more opportunities for education and training after 4 years and become an attractive asset for the private and public sector. A program of this kind was the GI Bill in the US that Franklin Roosevelt signed in 1944 and the Veteran Act of 2008 that continued educational benefits for free college. These programs have resulted in benefit of great value to the US economy and to the military veterans who used these benefits. In India's fast growth period after 2025 the Indian economy would be 50% larger and be easily able to take in these graduates from the armed services with technical training and advanced courses just as the US economy did decades ago. During the days following the pandemic there is a sense of pessimism in some sections and the government can enhance the package with added pension benefits and healthcare and still keep the financial aspects in good shape. ...

50% of European CFO's surveyed by CFO magazine and 60% of Asian CFO's think the dollar decline is permanent devaluation compared to a third of US CFO's. The Commerce Dept figures show January exports 16.6% higher than a year earlier, and the trade deficit down by 7% in 2007 vs 2006 which will accelerae in 2008 with the larger dollar decline. As long as European and Asian economies continue to grow a bit slowly but not in a recession like the US the positive effect of growing exports should continue. So far for the last 6 quarters according to the WSJ exports have contributed 1 percentage point on average to economic growth measured at annual rate while the housing slump has subtracted just over one percentage point on average. So this is no small feat for exports and it has helped make the economy more resilient to the shocks of housing and oil price. As long as the growth overseas is not affected to a great extent by the economic slowdown in the US exports can continue to play this role. As the housing crisis is primarily a US and UK phenomenon this should not seruiously damage the economies of Asia and Europe and their ability to take in US exports....

The Economist magazine points out that Indian companies will have to invest more in innovation if they are to maintain return on investment. It says the GST, government action to reduce corruption since 2012 through court decision on crony capitalism, better functioning markets for land, natural resources and capital, more efficient supply chains, will force large Indian companies to compete by becoming more efficient. Under the previous regime before 2012 large Indian companies were able to make high ROI but this was an illusory advantage, as the growth in the Indian economy could create opportunities for firms that can compete with innovation, quality and efficiency. In this sense the Indian economy is entering a new phase under the Modi administration with stretch goals and efforts to create  the next ten year period of growth very different from the past.

Toyota moves back to its utilitarian roots, where costs matter and pricing matters. Higher cost technological advances are being rejected in favor of older approaches that accomplish the same thing in the manufacturing process at alower cost. And pricier features like the solar ventilation system option on the new Prius are being rejected so that the price can be made more competitive with American cars. Even the idea of pricing Toyota's cars at apremium of $1000 or $1500 over American cars is being questioned in this market. The new Prius mad due to come out this year, developed at a time when Toyota was coasting as it emerged as the most profitable and the largest auto manufacturer in the world, has a price tag of $28,000 versus the $22,000 for the current Prius. This has alarmed some of the bigger Toyota dealers so much that Akio Toyoda the new CEO visited Southern California to talk to these dealers about what has gone wrong with the pricing. These dealers told him that they were worried about that price when they were drastically discounting current Prius models to maintain their sales rate. This is also happening when Toyotas are piling up unsold on car lots at most ports in the US. As Toyota competed with GM for top spot in sales Toyota's management of Watanabe and Kinoshita, the outgoing CEO and his assistant, say critics inside Toyota, lost sight of the need for caution as the company's manufacturing capacity expanded in Japan and overseas. Now with the selection of Akio Toyoda to succeed Watanabe as new CEO, the decision has been made to make a shift to anew generation of managers, with the retirement of 3 executives including Kinoshita and Watanabe. ...
