Russia's national airline, Aeroflot, has goen through a transformation by improving safety and inflight service through a rigorous program of training for pilots and inflight service personnel by 2015. It is 51 percent state owned. Aeroflot has the advantage of the Moscow hub which cuts passenger travel time to distant destinations by 2 hours compared to Dubai hub of Emirates airlines. A flight New York to Shanghai is shorter by 2 hours for Chinese travellers. The Moscow- Rome flight is 80 percent filled by Chinese passengers for example. Passenger volume is up 10.3 percent in the first 9 months of the year, even as air travel in Russia was down 3.4 percent in Russia, according to Aeroflot and transport ministry. One advantage enjoyed by Aeroflot is its very young fleet of planes, with age of 4.3 years on average in 2014, compared to Delta at 17 years and British Airways at 12.6. It has 118 Airbuses and 25 Boeings, and has added 21 locally made Sukhoi Superjets to support the local aircraft maker. ...

Aeroflot is listed on the London stock exchange. It is going through a makeover by ordering Boeing and Airbus planes to become profitable, because the older Russian made Tu-154 planes were costly to operate with higher fuel consumption. The Sukhoi Superjets are being built in partnership with Boeing. Kramer says the aircraft industry operates on long timelines so that the lack of local aircraft comparable to Embraer of Brazil and Bombardier of Canada is more a reflection of the situation in the 1990's than of today. Newer aircraft are planned for the next decade for smaller midrange planes. In the meantime Aeroflot is selling all of its Tupolev aircraft and plans to layoff 6000 workers during the transition to profitability. Till 2009 Aeroflot was run by Yeltsin's son-in-law, as were many other companies managed by Yeltsin's inner circle during that period. The new price of the Leaf is $35,200 for the 2012 model year as more features were made standard by Nissan. The Leaf will now cost $27,700 after a $7,500 federal tax credit in the U.S. The higher price also reflects the stronger yen as the Leaf is made in Japan. Every Leaf is sold from a waiting list, with sales in only some states- including Arizona, California, Hawaii, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas and Washington. Nissan's marketing chief, Brian Carolin, says about 1000 vehicles a month will be sold for the remainder of 2011. The average customer of the Leaf drives the car with an all electric range of 75 miles, for 30 miles each day and charges it for 3 hours a day. Average household income is $140,000. The 2012 standard model comes with a cold weather package, heated seats, battery warmer and steering wheel, and a fast charging arrangement that gets it recharged in 30 minutes, instead of the 8 hours.

Harwood asks Perry tough questions about his 20% flat tax, spending cuts and the deficit (response: the only way to get the country working again is to reduce the tax burden across the board and create the incentives to invest), raising the retirement age for Social Security (response: will discuss this one with Congress), views on regulation (response: regulators did not do their job, nothing wrong with the old regulatory system). Perry saying that this is the way America has always worked- by creating the incentives to invest. Perry say he is for a bold plan not something that will trim things at the edges as Romney would do.

This Journal editorial says Portugal's focus should be on making the Portuguese economy more competitive, and not merely the fiscal tightening and tax raising policies recommended by the IMF in the past. The focus should be on growth, a freer labor market, creating more efficient firms, and lower costs to compete in the European free trade zone. The euro currency reduced Portugal's borrowing costs in the past, but growth requires a more productive workforce. Only 28% of working age Portuguese have completed high school, showing an alarming lack of investment in education. (See the group on education in Portugal). The Journal also questions the lofty sounding agenda of the Lisbon agenda after the2000 EU summit in Lisbon, as it did not get down to addressing problems in individual countries.
