How brokers could earn a "yield spread premium" which could amount to $8000 on a 400,000 loan, or 2% of the loan amount, i f the borrower's interest rate was an extra 1.25% higher than lender's listed rates. These yield spread premiums encouraged brokers to push borrowers into more expensive loans. A study done for the Wall Streeet Journal has shown that borrowers with credit scores above 620 who would be able to get a conventional loan were a large part of the subprime borrowers since 2000. In 2005 borrowers with such credit scores got 55% of all subprime mortgages, with this rising higher to 61% in 2006. In 2000 that figure was 41% according to this study. A sizable number of people with top notch credit signed up for expensive subprime loans. The analysis looked at $2.5 trillion mortgage loans since 2000. The study was done by a San Francisco research firm, First American LoanPerformance.

BMW lags Mercedes in return on sales its 6% vs Mercedes 8%. Improving profitability to have an 8%-10% return on sales by 2012 is the goal of BMW and it hopes to achieve this with a plan to create costs savings of 6 billion euros in a five yer plan announced by CEO Reithofer. in September 2007. This will mean thousands of layoffs and will mean that it will affect those with temporary contracts first and will include some buyouts also. BMW sales are growing and could reach 1.8 million by 2012.

Inflation went upto 15.7% in February in Vietnam, the highest in 13 years. The dollar peg of Vietnam's currency helped to boost textile and electronics exports because they were chaeaper than products made in Thailand or Malaysia, the dollar being pegged by the central bank and its being allowed to rise or fall 0.75 a day.But now its boosting inflation as the dollar loses value and Vietnam's central bank widened the narrow band for the dong to 1% from 0.75 %, and the bank says it plans to expand the band to 2% for a rise or fall in one day. The black market rate has devalued the dollar by 3% since March 10, 2008 to 15500 dong to a dollar. Most Vietnamese ae now trying to get their hands on dong and exchanging dollars. The dong's increase in value will help reduce inflation but exporters who get dollars see their revenues in dong fall.

Inflation on an annual basis hit 27% in June. The central bank widened the band it alloed the dong to rise or fall against the dollar each day from 1% to 2% and announced a devaluation of 2% in June 2008. At this time the dollar buys 19000 dong on the black market compared to the official rate of 16600 dong, and the official rate is climbing up to the higher unofficial rate. A large part of the inflation is caused by a flood of foreign investment and bank loans to state owned companies, and the spending by state owned companies. The state owned companies like the Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Group are controllinng their spending. Some of the inflationary influx is investment from foreign manufacturers trying to escape rising costs in China, showing the risks if this and other factors are not carefully managed. Recently Greenspan advised Vietnamese premier Nguyen Dung to mop up the liquidity surge and restrict spending by state owned firms.

FDIC program for loan modification at IndyMac Bank. About 3500 loans were modified, and 15,000 borrowers contacted in recent weeks with offers for lower affordable monthly payments. FDIC's innovation is to create a comprehensive program with clear guidelines so that a lot of loans can be modified without doing it on a case by case basis which would take too long. Loans are modified by reducing interest rates and the principal amount so that the payments are affordable each month, and the FDIC has come up with 38 to 40% of the previous monthly payment as about the right amount. It also looks at tax information to verify earnings. There have been complaints about the responsiveness of FDIC Indymac call centers which may have inadvertently turned down some homeowners looking for help. A big problem is that the FDIC can do little for loans sold to other investors so that out of 653,000 loans serviced by Indymac Bank only about 47,000 are eligible for FDIC modification program. ...

The Hispanic vote counts for crucial vote margins not only in the southwest but in places like Pennsylvania and Virginia where they are 5% of the voting population. About 10 million Hispanics voted up from 7.8 million in 2004 accounting for 8% of the voting population. That is an increase of 2.2 million voters and abig part of grass roots efforts to get them to register both by Hillary Clinton, and Obama. This grass roots effort was crucial. And mobilized by immigration policies of the Republicans and by the economic downturn and by a new generation of younger latino voters they voted nationally 66% to 32% for Obama over McCain. In Florida the older generation of Cuban Americans were eclipsed by new younger Cuban American voters and South and Central American immigrants giving Obama 57% to 42% edge over McCain. In Colorado the Latino vote was 17% of the vote with 73% of Hispanics voting Obama. Newly registered voters were 35% in Colorado, 34% in Florida.

The 41 year old actor and comedian Volodymyr Zelensky, is elected president of Ukraine winning 73% of the vote, compared to 24% for Petro Poroshenko. He plays a fictional Ukrainian president in a popular television comedy Servant of the People. Zelensky's team has promised a new era in which political and business interests are unable to interfere in the judicial system. Poroshenko made similar promises but failed to live upto them. A member of the Zelensky team Ruslan Stefanchuk, says "we need to cut the lines between the presidential administration and the courts and prosecutors."

Many of the countries in Eastern Europe that emerged from the fall of the Soviet bloc, face similar challenges. Zelensky emerged as Ukrainians were struggling with the issues of corruption and deteriorating relations with Russia following a separatist movement in the eastern part of Ukraine supported by Russia.

Cohen talks to Nicholas Bay, secretary general of the National Front, who says this election is about patriotism, the nation state vs globalization, as the National Front tries to portray its opposition as being less pro-France, and less pro French culture. The centrist candidate Macron stands in front of a statue of Alexandre Dumas in Picardy, an hour northeast of Paris, and says he is for an "open patriotism" that embraces people of different origins and embraces refugees. Cohen attends a Le Pen rally in Metz, Lorraine, talks to a National Front mayor in Picardy and left party supporters in the town, talks to foreigners in the banlieu of Sevran. Cohen says a National Front victory is possible if enough voters who support the far left party of Melenchon do not vote for centrist candidate Macron, and enough voters of centre right Fillon supporting French culture and nationalism drift to Le Pen. As in the Dutch election with Moroccans derided by the far right the immigrant issue is a factor. Against this background is how events play out in the last weeks of the election. The Trump campaign has 14 million followers on Twitter, and 50 million "engagement" accounts on Facebook- that cost very little. Social media is to Trump in 2016 what community networking on the PC dashboard was to Obama in 2008. As the WSJ pointed out in an editorial, the splitting of the Republican vote among many candidates, and the failure of candidates to grasp the nature of the unconventional campaign waged by Trump- descending into attacks based on target groups of voters on every candidate except Trump- created the opportunity Trump has grasped with his knack for improvising along the way. Commonsense campaigning without sophisticated strategies, improvising often along the way, using the available medium of social media at little cost to get the message and slogan across, helped Trump make the deal with voters to upset the political establishment. The Sanders campaign is also based on careful repetition of the same slogan and facts about inequality and lobbyists, over and over again, offering strong action on health care and college tution just as Trump offers strong action on China trade, immigration with the idea of the wall, and barring entry of Muslims for terrorism till "we figure out what's happening." The difference being that Trump thinks big and targets the entire electorate of his party's voters in the primaries from the beginning, and a broad based campaign on many issues. Underestimating your opponent carries many risks in politics, never more so than when you are out of touch or not listening to voter frustration, and fail to speak up to it....

He was seen as having originality by Silicon Valley companies, which impressed Bill Ford. Hackett, 62 years, has to tackle the job of running a large company, something he has not done before. Eminent climate ecologist Nicholas Stern says India's commitment by 2070 demonstrates real leadership from Mr. Modi of India.The Guardian says India's commitment to net zero emissions by 2070 is realistic considering that it is decades away from its peak in economic growth and energy consumption compared to US or even China. Energy consumption is expected to grow faster than any other country in the next few years. India's population is also expected to pass that of China as the largest in the world. The Guardian says climate experts who did the modeling have said this was the most realistic scenario for India - to achieve net zero emissions by 2070. This also means India's peak energy emissions will be reached by 2030. Eminent climate ecologist Nicholas Stern says - "This was a very significant moment for the summit. This action might mean India's annual natural greenhouse gas emissions could peak by 2030. This demonstrates real leadership from a country whose emissions per capita are about one third of the global average."  Also significant is Mr. Modi's pledge to deliver on 5 commitments 1. 50% of India's power to be generated by renewable energy by 2030. 2. Increase of 500 gigawatts of renewable energy including solar by 2030. 3. Reducing carbon emissions by 1 billion tons by 2030. 4. Reduce carbon intensity of the economy by 45% by 2030. This relates to how efficiently energy is used to generate 1 unit of economic GDP. With 1.3 billion people India is the third largest emitter of carbon dioxide- at about 3 billion tons- after the US and China. In growth terms this means India is going to grow very differently from the way China did in 2000-2020 with its many highly polluting industrial plants. The head of the US Renewable Energy Agency Mr.Birol says in a BBC intervew that the cement and steel plants alone of China have more emissions than the whole of the European Union's total emissions. Much of this comes from old plants and old technologies with surplus production of steel from what is now a bygone era of excess, inefficiency and chaotic growth. India plans to bring climate change emissions and energy efficiency through renewables into its Gat Shakti master plan for the country's economic.development. ...

Macron's party won less than 10% of the vote in the regional elections. The Republicans, former president Sarkozy's party were written off after Macron's win. India lags behind in the number of tourists visiting the country. Part of the reason was the lack of good infrastructure in the country. Indian Railways and new highways, modern river transport has opened up remote parts of the country from the jungles of Assam to deserts of Rajasthan, the mountainous regions of Kashmir, Sikkim, Bhutan and Ladakh, Arunachal, and the river regions of the Brahmaputra river and Ganges to tourism. Compared to France with 100 million tourists a year India has about a tenth of that.  Tourism is now seen as an engine for job growth as small handicraft industries can tap into the tourist market, hotels and restaurants can add to employment. The new budget for 2025-26 recognizes this by almost tripling the 95 million euros budget for 2024 to 283 million euros in 2025. Delhi with images of pollution is a distraction yet the tourist from Europe or America can find much to see in smaller towns and metros in the country from Buddhist and Vedic civilizations thousands of years old and recent history after invasions from Western Asia and Europe since 1600, and interesting cuisine, culture, language and regional influences. ...
