A WSJ/NBC News poll taken in Dec. 2015 after the San Bernardino terrorist attack on Donald Trump's proposed total ban on Muslims entering the country, shows 57% of the people surveyed opposed to it, and 25% supporting it. Among Republican primary voters 39% oppose it and 38% support it showing the Republican voters almost evenly divided on the issue, and the proposed ban not affecting Trump's standing with his supporters. About 56% of Republican voters see Trump in a positive light compared to 26% negatively, showing that Trump has strong support in the Republican party. The divergence in views sharpens when considering that half of Republican primary voters have an unfavorable view of Muslims while 79% of Democratic primary voters having a favorable view. In the country as a whole the poll shows about 60% have a favorable view of Muslims.

Professor Zoubida Charrouf of Mohamed V University in Rabat, Morocco, with the support of Morocco's Ministry of Agriculture is pushing cooperatives in Morocco that produce Argan oil to increase wages for women. Wages are sometimes as low as $50 a month for the women who work with piles of fruit in the countryside along the Atlantic coast. Many work for below the minimum wage in Morocco. Women do most of this work. Argan trees are native to this part of Morocco and Berber women have the skills for this work.  Argan oil is used in Morocco for dipping bread and a food. In Europe and America. Argan oil is used by the cosmetic industry. A similar situation is faced by people in agriculture in other regions. In Ghana cocoa farmers are faced with precarious prices for cocoa and struggle to make a decent living. In Morocco there is the threat also of industrial production of argan- harvesting and production of argan oil using modern machinery, cutting costs but also depriving these Berber women of a chance to earn a living. How can these different factors be processed in a way that leads to a win-win, fair-fair situation for consumers and producers? ...

China's new urbanization plan is for 60% of the population to be urban residents by 2020, up from 52% at the end of 2012. The plan will relax "hukou" residency restrictions, and about 45% of the population will qualify for benefits and services such as pensions and education that are given to qualifying urban residents. Premier Li Keqiang says this will boost growth as domestic consumption is seen as the main growth driver for the future. The cabinet said on a government website that "domestic demand is the fundamental driver of our nation's economic development, and urbanization has the greatest potential to expand domestic demand." Fast rail will be provided to urban areas with population over 500,000 and rail to urban areas with population over 200,000 by 2020. About 90% of the population will be within reach of a nearby airport. Relaxation of "hukou" restrictions will be made for mainly smaller cities. Two decades of industrialization has led to concentration of wealth, with much smaller disposable incomes left for the majority of the population to create a sudden surge in consumer spending, as pointed out by Orlik....

Tensions were high, an attack on oil facilities was not expected. About half of Saudi oil production was put out of use in the attack by low flying missiles that evaded radar defenses. Saudis plan to meet oil export commitments by importing oil. President Trump imposed sanctions on the Iranian central bank, and at the same time said he would meet with Iran's president Rouhani for talks if arranged.  The European Union called for talks to renegotiate the Iran nuclear deal considering all issues nuclear, oil, and political issues in the region. The effect of Trump administration sanctions on Iran's economy have led to worsening relations. Japan, South Korea, India and China are affected by the U.S. effort to limit imports of Iranian oil. As tensions rose Japan with limited reserves made efforts to reduce tensions and bring the parties together. Android founder Andy Rubin started Android in 2003, which struggled because of a lack of funding. Rubin had developed a phone called the Sidekick in an earlier venture, which had attracted the attention of Mr Page and Mr Brin. Google acquired Android, at the time just Rubin and a couple of employees, and started a secret project in 2005-2007. The project was to create a modern operating system for smartphones that would make it possible to have powerful internet applications. Google planned to give it free and make money on online ads that would come up on the phones. Microsoft made device makers pay fees for using its mobile operating system. By the middle of 2007 Rubin had 100 engineers working in the unit. By late 2007 Google had setup a consortium for an "open handset alliance" with 30 handset makers, including Samsung, Motorola, and LG, with the goal of building the new Android powered smartphones. In the fall of 2008 the first Android phone the G1 was introduced. Progress on the phone led to Verizon Wireless and Motorola working with Google for introducing the Droid Android powered smartphone in 2009. In 2010 Google made a failed effort to sell a Google branded HTC Nexus One smartphone direct to buyers. This was followed by the acquisition of Motorola Mobility by Google for $12.5 billion in 2011....

Parmeswaran Iyer headed two of prime minister Modi's favorite projects, one for ODI free India through the Swachh Bharat Clean India Mission, and second the Jal Jeeven Drinking Water for All mission. In both he has performed admirably. He is an IAS officer from 1981 from Uttar Pradesh batch and worked with the World Bank water initiatives from 2009 when Modi brought him back to India for Swacch Bharat Mission. Har Ghar Jal to bring water by tap to every family in India is an exceptional achievement of Modi and Iyer.  This report in Hindustan Times shows how hands on Iyer is, as it says Iyer cleaned a toilet pit during one visit to Telengana state in 2017. The behavioural transformation India experienced under people like Modi and Iyer takes India back to the days of the Gandhi Ashram on the Sabarmati river in Ahmedabad. Gandhi's activity there including a form of Swachh Bharat Mission in its pioneering days in the 1920's setting the form of activity that was not forgotten and brought back by Modi and Iyer one hundred years later. This has touched the lives of hundreds of millions of Indians today in the way Gandhi's ideas touched the lives of hundreds of millions in the 1920's, bringing dignity and grace to the faces of 1.4 billion people and providing an example for the extended neighborhood to Indonesia for close to 2 billion people. ...

This editorial in the WSJ says public officials in China should be made accountable for errors such as made in the Shenzhen and other recent man-made disasters, including explosions at Tianjin. It cites Chinese media saying the company that handled the landfill in Shenzhen was not qualified, the company that caused chemical blasts in Tianjin used political connections to operate without proper licenses. Lax law enforcement caused many disasters in China in 2015.

Donald Trump proposes a ban on Muslims entering the U.S. until U.S. authorites have figured out what is happening following the San Bernardino terrorist attack. A poll by PPP polling firm cited in The Washington Post, shows 30% of Republicans thinking Islam should not be legal in the U.S. and 21% not sure, showing how Trump is appealing to white working class Americans and their fears. Experts say this is similiar to a movement in the 1850's which was anti-Catholic, except that at the time there was not the media attention and the presidential elections season running for a year, so that this was happening more at the local level.

Matteo Renzi wins a confidence vote in the Senate by 169 to 139. His economic plan is to give business a boost. He calls on Italians to free themselves from "cultural subalternity" or inferiority to Europe, and "to dream bigger." The plan is for a double digit cut in Italy's payroll taxes, creating guarantee funds for small companies, and paying all of the money the government owes to suppliers estimated at 100 billion euros. Renzi covered the subject of addressing school repairs costing several billion euros. His new cabinet has half of the ministers as women, some under 40, six from the previous Letta government. The Economy minister is Pier Carlo Padoan, chief economist of the OECD.

Northcroft in The Times says this about Gareth Southgage that Southgage devoted his life to the national team and has an envious record with two finals, one semifinal and one quarterfinal in world soccer. It is the best record of an England coach in 66 years. Southgate says that this Euro 2024 was the best coaching he has ever done. In the game with the Netherlands taking out Foden and Kane in the last minutes of the game and bringing in Palmer and Watkins led to Watkins taking England to the Finals against Spain. In the last minutes of the game repeated headers and counter headers almost took the game against Spain to extra time. English fans are notoriously fickle and Gareth Southgate deserves to feel great about what he has accomplished winning the respect of the Spanish team which clearly were desperate to keep the ball out of their goal to the end, winning the applause of hundreds of millions fans all over the world for games well played, and the thanks of England for doing the hard work at the FA level youth clubs at under 16 and under 19 to give English soccer a new generation of players. This really is what soccer is about, not the glitz and glamour of television and record level contracts of players and team owners, or unruly fans and their criticism, that are eclipsing the best aspects of the game that brings so much to people all over the world. Lucy Powell Central Manchester MP elected Labour's Deputy Leader with 54% of the vote in 17% vote turnout. In a sign of the big changes in UK politics and economy Lucy Powell was fired by PM Starmer as leader in the House of Commons as recently as September 2025. Starmer clearly has not led the Labour Party in Britain in ways that would win the confidence of the people of Britain as demonstrated in a recent Wales by-election with Labour having only 11% of the vote after Reform in a previously safe seat.  Lucy Powell says about the lack of listening within Labour to the grassroots people and organization- “I think we often feel like our members and elected representatives are something we need to stand against or not value. They are our strengths. “They connect us to the national conversation. Instead of just telling people what we want them to do, we need to respect, value and include them more, and recognise that debate is not division or dissent, and recognise you have to take people with you and hear from broader voices, not just a narrower group of voices. “They haven’t felt they have been included and connected as they should in recent months, and that’s what often happens when you go into government. “I’m going to really help to do that, to re-engage with the party, and make them feel part of the conversation again. I’ll do that through working with Keir [Starmer], working with government, working right across the party in the leadership roles that I will have.”     ...

Russian proposals for settlement in Ukraine including giving up the whole eastern Donbass region, recognizing Crimea as part of Russia, and limiting its army and long range weapons. These are the same conditions set in 2022. There is a new situation developing in Europe as Germany, France, Britain and most of Eastern Europe looks to be firm in support of Ukraine. Germany is stepping up its military preparedness under chancellor Merz of the CDU led coalition government. The US under DJT is working under two pathways seeking engagement with Russia and at the same time seeking a way to settle the Ukraine conflict. With German, British and EU support it appears unlikely that Ukraine would agree to all the Russian terms as Russia is using some gains on the war front to gain a clear win in 2025. By 2026 with European support Ukraine may look for a settlement that offers better terms than currently offered by Russia. For the US DJT faces pressures from within the Republican party that would oppose giving Russia a win after its role as the aggressor in the Ukraine conflict, and after the bombing destruction of Ukraine's cities.   ...

The losses for investors from mortgage loans won't go down by much by Treasury's plan. Barclay's Capital Research estimates that losses could go down by 1% point from 13 to 15% losses that are expected on the subprime loans. And the economy would only be helped at the margins according to Roubini, a NYU economist who heads Roubini Global Economics, who doesn't see it doing much for the foeclosures and defaults leading to a housing recession for the next 3 years. Out of some 1.8 million borrowers, 600,000 not current on their payments will get no help, and of the remaining 1.2 million only 600,000 who are current on their mortgages but need help will qualify, those with better credit scores such as above 660 and having the means to pay will be excluded.
