Simon Nixon points out the problems investors had with UBS before the Oct 2012 decision to drastically reduce the size of the investment banking operations. UBS had three fourths of its capital engaged in investment banking earning only about 5% return. Private bank and wealth management businesses earned far better returns of 25%-40%. Under the new plan core Tier 1 ratio on a fully applied Basel III basis would be 13% in 2014. And return on equity under CEO Ermotti's plan would increase to over 15% by 2015. UBS would put emphasis on the private bank and wealth management businesses under the new plan and shrink the investment banking operations with large job cuts.

GM's operating income in European operations since January 2010 is a negative $2.34 billion. The continuing loss in European operations comes at a time when GM's performance is weakening in the U.S. GM is facing more competition from Japanese makers as they recover from the effects of the earthquake and tsunami of March 2011. GM had 82 selling days of Chevy Cruzes and 109 selling days of Malibus in dealer inventory in Jan 2012. Analysts estimate lower earnings of 42 cents per share for the last quarter of 2011. GM is freezing the salaries of 26,000 salaried employees and addressing a shortfall in its pension fund by switching to 401(K) contributions to reduce the risk.

The final cost of rescuing Ireland's banks according to Irish Finance Ministry officials is 50 billion euros, nearly $50,000 for every household in Ireland! But now investors fear the figure may be even higher. The miscalculations at the Finance Ministry have continued for 2 years. In December 2008, 1.5 billion euros were set aside for Anglo Irish Bank, going up eventually to 22.9 billion euros, and in September 2010 an additional 11.4 billion euros were added to that amount. The Irish banking crisis continues just as the 16 euro-zone countries have agreed to guarantee 440 billion euros in loans if any of the countries is unable to borrow from private markets.

The PBOC, China's central bank, injects $65 billion into China's banking system in Dec. 2014 to get banks to increase lending as the economy slows further. Experts say the growth rate is likely to drop below 7%. At the same time the central bank and economic policy makers are concerned about excesssive debt in the economy, shadow banking and local government debt risks. It cut benchmark interest rates by 0.25% in 2014. Other risks are developing as the property market cools off and investors shift investment to equity markets creating a surge of 50% in the Shanghai and Shenzen stock exchanges for 2014. As a result economic policy is not as effective in today's environment.

Russia's State Statistics Committee says growth slowed in the second quarter of 2013 to 1.2%, declining from 1.6% in the first 3 months. Inflation is at 6.4% for August, according to the Economy Ministry. The Russian central bank has resisted lowering rates because of the inflation target of 6%. The Putin adminstration is seeking 4-5% growth, after an average annual growth rate of 7.2% from 2000-2009, during the period of high growth in Putin's first term as president and second term as prime minister. There is a slowdown in foreign investment in the Russian economy, as investors in Europe and the U.S. shift away from emerging markets in 2013. In addition to this commodity prices are declining.

How in the last days before bankruptcy Chrysler executives pushed dealers to take therir allottment of cars even though they had unsold inventory sitting in their showrooms as sales plunged over 50% for Chrysler, the worst hit among all the carmakers. Dealers say this was aveiled threat to take the cars or face being terminated. For Jim Press and Chrysler this was about "You can help us, or burn all of us down," as Chrysler sturggled to show its viability to the government. Is the new size of Black Rock at $2.7 trillion in assets after the acquisition of Barclay Global Investors reason for concern. Black Rock CEO Larry Fink says that 100% of its assets is not trading for its bottom line but managing assets as a fiduciary responsibility. Its leverage is minimal, using $20 billion, or less than 1% of its $2.7 trillion in assets. He says for every dollar of equity Black Rock has a dollar of assets , and that "you cannot compare the two," referring to the overleveraging that brought down many financial firms like Bear Stearns and Lehman. He added that most of the money from BGI is in stock and bond index funds.

The strength of the Korean currency, the won, depends on the strength of Korea's shipbuilding business. Ships are the No. 1 export itemhaving replaced chips. Korea had $70 billion in shipbuilding orders in 2007, and $48 billion in 2008. Orders for 2009 are expected to fall to $5 billion according to the Korean Shipbuilders Association. In 2007 shipbuilders exchanged dollars for won, by the time ship orders fell sharply demand for won declined. With the Lehman Brothers collapse things took asharp dive for the won, and it lost 40% of its value, one of the biggest drops of any currency. As foreign investors have returned the won is now down 20% from 2007 yearend levels.

As GE's financial services business led to earnings shortfall and 13% drop in its share price on April 11, investors may be overlooking the strong position of GE in energy businesses like turbines, nuclear energy, and in oil and gas. GE's overeseas sales went up by 23% in 2007 driven by 23% gain in its energy centric infrastructure business. Additional note is that GE is in the healthcare business and in green environmental business which should see growth even in a recession. Kerkorian will lose $640 million of his $980 million investment in Ford made in April of this year at $7 a share. He sold a portion of his shares at $2.43 a share and is expected to sell the remainder soon. MGM Mirage stock that he owns have fallen by 85% since hitting $100 a share last October. The value of his 54% stake in MGMMirage has sunk from $13 billion to just over $2 billion. Its not clear that sale of Ford shares were prompted bya margin call. Private equity firms loaded their companies with a lot of debt and now the debt payments come due at the worst possible time when they are frozen out of the credit markets. While experts like Kaplan at the University of Chicago think that while things may not be pretty it may not be as bad as 1986-89 when a lot of companies defaulted on their debt, and private equity firms like Blackstone and others are more long term investors than hedge funds, this downturn may be different from any other in the postwar era in its prolonged nature and depth and global impact. Already even the most optimistic experts like Rogoff are saying it could be ten years.

As the USA and Europe move into a deep and prolonged recession China loses some of its biggest export markets and faces a significant slowing down of its economy. China's leaders are pondering how to respond to the crisis which will affect China, and meet the challenges of lower living standards of a neglected rural countryside and farmers compared to the urban coastal areas. This is still where some 800 million of the Chinese people live by official count, so something needs to be done to improve prospects and help generate higher incomes and opportunities for people in the farming countryside. Making land use rights of farmers able to be bought or sold for the first time would generate additional income for farmers, and help consolidate farmland into larger plots, which can use technology and improvements for better yields to keep China self sufficient in agricultural production. Keeping the situation the way it has remained for the last two decades, where local party officials and local leaders controlled the land and where farmers rights were ignored leading to suppression of farmer's protests for illegal land seizures and corruption, may have made it easier for plants to be setup across China and attracted foreign investors. But it has not been good for China's farmers. Chinese party officials at the local level who realized the advantages to them by controlling land and making it easier to set up manufacturing plants with foreign investors may have steered state policy in this direction from the early days after Deng's opening to capitalism and trade. Now with a success in the urban coastal areas and in building infrastructure Chinese leaders in the central government must be faced with a difficult issue of how to move on from here with the loss of China's export markets for its heavily export dependent economy. The need to generate a domestic consumer driven economy must not be lost on the Chinese leadership in Beijing. Something that will keep China's economy moving in the new situation. This is the context in which land use rights may be extended from 30 to 70 years and able to be bought and sold to improve farm incomes and generate internal momentum in the rural areas where most of China's people live. It also offers a contrast to the situation India faces where even the Nano plant of Tata Motors had to be moved from W. Bengal state to Gujarat state over farmers rights to land which in that case was also used as an issue for political agitation. The move by China accelerated industrialization and setting up manufacturing plants as land was taken over by local officials for use with foreign investors but also ended up neglecting the countryside, and created too big a dependence on exports....

This WSJ editorial on the sliding scale with lower capital gains taxes for investments held for a longer time frame proposed by Hillary Clinton, says there is no economic theory that shows one or two year investments are worse than longer term investments, and says investors who invest in startups and cash in after a year or two can then invest in other startups increasing investment capital. It points out that new startups are fostered better in an environment where capital gains taxes do not promote holding investments for a longer term. Hillary Clinton is calling for higher capital gains taxes on shorter term investments. The current rate is similiar to the 20% rate under Bill Clinton. George Bush lowered it to 15%, and president Obama increased this to 20% for couples earning more than $484,851 a year, and added a surcharge of 3.8%. Under Reagan it was initally 20% in 1981 and in 1987 as part of tax reform cutting the top income tax rate to 28%, it was 28%. Hillary Clinton's plan is for it to be based on how long investors hold their investment discouraging 1-3 year investment horizons- Year 2- 43.4%, Year 3- 39.8%, Year 4- 35.8%, Year 6- 23.8% or the current rate for the highest income bracket. Investments in infrastructure and long term research projects leading to new technologies and products require a longer horizon encouraging such investments. The Clinton plan appears to be a response to the tech bubble with investments in small tech changes and software improvements that have led to surging investment in startups in social media and other areas which have not yielded the productivity gains needed to support increase in wages- resulting in low productivity and low wage gains in the last decade....

After the financial crisis of 2008-2009, commercial real estate defaults posed a serious threat to the US economy. Now this threat is receding with low interest rates making it easier to get cheap financing, which raises the returns. For banks the rising earnings give a cushion to absorb losses, letting them sell distressed properties and not have to hold onto them. From office towers in Manhattan to Florida apartment buildings and retail properties in Washington, commercial real estate values are going up. Prices of commercial real estate properties sold by institutional investors went up by 19% in 2010, according to an index developed by the MIT Center for Real Estate. Investors have boosted the prices of bonds backed by commerical real estate to the highest level in two years. The managing director at Real Capital Analytics says, that with values going up, both the owners and lenders have more room to work out difficult situations. Real Capital Analytics January 2011 report shows that of the $52 billion in retail properties to fall into default, a little over half have completed workouts. In Feb 2010, the Congressional Oversight Panel of the Troubled Asset Relief Program said that the commercial real estate market had the potential to pose a serious threat to the US economy. The panel estimated that about half of the $1.4 trillion in commercial property real estate loans set to be paid off by 2014 were under water, where the borrower owes more than the property is worth. Market segments for hotel, apartment buildings and retail are going up. Hotel occupancy rates in the top 25 markets went up from 60% to 64%, according to Smith Travel Research. Sales of apartment buildings in the US went up as home ownership hit new lows, and lease rates went up to the highest levels in 4 years, according to Axiometrics....

The government controlled Securities Association of China says a fund of 120 billion renminbi ($19.4) billion is set up July 3, 2015 to buy shares in the larger more stable companies and reduce selling of shares from brokerage firms portfolios. This is not likely to have much impact because of its small size, and because the volatility is concentrated in small and medium size firms stocks which had doubled since June 2014, and were hit by the sharp decline in June 2015. The stock exchanges in Shanghai and Shenzen also suspended initial public offerings. Share prices have dropped by about 30% since June 12 on the Shanghai and Shenzen stock exchages. With the surge in the Chinese stock market prices till June 12, 2015, share prices of many small and medium sized companies doubled or even quadrupled in value. The overall index on the 2 exchanges doubled because as the smaller stocks quadrupled the large blue chips went up by about a fourth in value. The overall Shanghai market went up 149% to June 12, 2015, over the prior year. It is down 28.6% as of July 5, 2015 since June 12, 2015. A stock index of 100 large mainland Chinese companies traded both in Shanghai and Hong Kong were up about 24% by contrast. A major problem is the margin trading with loans to investors from stock purchases up nine times in 2 years and informal financial companies charging annual interest rates of over 20%. Small investors focussed on small and medium sized firms because they were going up the fastest, and many risked their life savings. Younger workers were also part of the group caught up in the frenzy of stock buying. Shares in the larger companies are only about 30% of the overall value of companies on the Shanghai Stock Exchange....

Hedge funds had negative return of 3% on average in 2015, according to research firm HFR Inc. Analysts say many things went wrong for hedge funds in 2015. By comparison the S&P 500 return for 2015 was 1.4%, including dividends. Hedge funds charge high fees to pension funds and institutional investors for the higher returns promised. Historically this is 2% of assets under management and 20% of any profits. Which means pension funds that stuck with hedge funds did poorly on this portion of their portfolio. California's pension fund CALPERS made the decision to remove hedge funds investments from its portfolio in 2015. Hedge funds have not performed as well as the S&P 500 since the 2008 crisis for every year except 2011.

H-P takes a huge $8.8 billion charge over the Autonomy Inc. acquisition in Nov. 2012. H-P's CEO Whitman says Autonomy Inc. had misrepresented the revenue before its acquisition by H-P under CEO Apotheker for $11.1 billon in Oct. 2011. Apotheker was fired by the H-P Board following the acquisition, after his strategy to shift H-P's focus from PC's to software came under criticism from investors and the tech community. H-P alleges accounting irregularities, with $5 billion of the $8.8 billion charge announced by Whitman coming from accounting errors. H-P has asked the UK's Serious Fraud Office to investigate. The SEC was alerted and it is starting its investigation into the allegations of "serious accounting improprieties" and "outright misrepresentations."

Francois Hollande, the Socialist party candidate for president in France, was strongly critical of the failure of the EU plan on Greece. He says the there was in this situation a failure not only of governance in Greece, but also a failure of governance in Europe. The situation called for extraordinary measures early in the crisis. Its not about Greece not having to make the cuts to reduce the deficit, says Hollande, but about coming up with a plan that offers a return to growth- to bring debt down to 60% of GDP with a larger share of private and public contributions. Italy has 1.5 trillion euros of debt outstanding and this is the third largest behind USA and Japan. About 241 billion euros worth of Italian government bonds are expected to be issued in 2010, with 171 billon euros of this in redemptions. Interest rates need to be low to not widen its deficit. Italian debt is expected to go up to 118% of GDp in 2011 from 103% in 2007 according to Moody's Investors Service.By contrast Spain's debt s expected to go up by 38% in the same period. Italy's households are less burdened with debt than Spain's. still Italian bonds are affected, as yields widened between Italian and German government bonds to 1.58% compared to before the euro-zone rescue plan of 750 billion euros.

Year over year inflation in Dec. 2013 was 9.9% in India. RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan plans to focus on headline inflation which focusses on food and fuel which are about 60% of the consumer basket in India. Earlier RBI efforts used a number of indicators- inflation, growth, financial stability and exchange rates which created confusion in the minds of investors about the serious control of rising prices. Inflation for the last 5 years has been over 8%, and is persistent even as growth slows. The policy rate is now about 2 percentage points below inflation. Inflation targeting under Rajan could take the shape of 8% target in the first year, dropping to 6% and then a range between 2-6%.

The difficult task ahead for Fiat's Marchionne, trying to reverse Chrysler's decline. Running Opel and Fiat, will take a lot of energy and initiative, and its by no means clear how he is going to go about doing this. Some arithmetic done by analysts shows the value of the Fiat, Opel, Chrysler auto companies, by excluding other non-auto parts of Fiat, and taking out Fiat debt and liabilities estimated at $8 billion euros. And taking that number and Fiat's market cap, the difference gives a value of 5.5 billion euros as what investors ascribe to Fiat Auto and its ambitions. This is just one fourth of the Fiat auto units 2009 revenues of 21.7 billion euros, as estimated by Morgan Stanley.

People in China with 800 yuan or $114 can now invest in low cost mutual funds. They can invest in 5700 domestic mutual funds offered by Vanguard's partner in China Ant Financial Services Group. Vanguard offers investment advice in assembling mutual funds. The investment advice will depend on algorithms not people to provide investment advice.  Ant owns 51% Vanguard 49%. Chinese investors are known for speculative approach to investing and making risky investments. By contrast Vanguard's approach in the U.S. is more careful and makes a serious effort to reduce risk with its index based mutual funds which it pioneered. China is making an effort to bring American companies into its financial  markets as part of the opening up sought by the U.S. Vanguard CEO Tim Buckley says his goal is "to fundamentally change for the better how individuals in China invest." Vanguard says it has taken the long view having worked for a long time on getting regulatory approval and its own approach for investing to introduce in China. It studied the market since 2018 talking to industry peers, regulators and clients. It says Chinese regulators appreciate Vanguard taking the long view. Today Vanguard's office in China has only 20 employees, and it has stayed away from setting up private investment funds for wealthy individuals and institutions which is permitted for western firms in China such as Fidelity International.  Vanguard's Mr.Bogle pioneered low cost index mutual funds that follow and index as opposed to having mutual fund managers determine investments. This takes the guesswork and individual bias out of the equation as experience has proven that over the long run this approach works best. Vanguard now has $6 trillion in funds under management, and is by far the largest mutual funds company in the world. It now has the potential to tackle a huge market of 900 million individuals in China. ...

Risk is inherent in investing. It just needs to be understood well and grasped. There is a lesson in here that some risk is necessary, depending on one's risk horizon and it does not have to be Argentine bonds. Argentine 100 year bond and US Treasury 30 year bond returns 2017-2025 show quite a surprise.  50% return for 2017-25 on Argentine 100 year bonds vs -10% on US Treasury 30 year bonds. It shows the nature of emerging market risk says the WSJ- political risk. At one point the Argentine bonds showed a 50% loss, yet investors willing to stick through the downturn did better than expected, much better. The recovery did not start till Jan 2024 though, 7 years later. In this case the risk was the pandemic in addition to political risk of Argentine earlier defaults but the recovery took place years after the pandemic declined and with the election of Milieu as president.
