Fake news ads on Google Search are a couple of the hard to believe results Hiroko Tabuchi finds in one of his searches using the words "climate change." One ad says "Global Warming Hoax." More alarming is the way the Google algorithm and a person's search history is used by Google to send that person what he likes or approves. So that a NYT reporter's account may show a different ad on Search for "climate change" - mostly positive ones from Environmental Defense Fund. Tabuchi says some of the ads calling climate change false are still appearing on Google even after the New York Times alerted Google about the problem.  A perceptive observer would find that that this is exactly how Search can end up reinforcing people and dividing them into different camps hostile to each other. More significantly it might make people resistant to even hear another person with different ideas, a problem we face today in American democracy. ...

Britain, France and Germany triggered a dispute settlement mehanism in the agreement which can result in the United Nations reimposing international sanction on Iran's economy, banks, and top officials within 2 months. This follows Iran's resumption of nuclear activities banned under the agreement. Earlier the U.S. withdrew from the agreement and the European Union tried to save the agreement. Recent tensions and the U.S. insistence on the renegotiating for a new agreement have led to this collapse of the 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran.

The chaotic nature of the national lockdown announcement in Britain with Health Secretary Hancock pushing for a national lockdown and prime minister Boris Johnson's hesitation for 2 weeks. The Chief Medical Officer Mr. Chris Whitty told a top level meeting of ministers that the NHS could be overwhelmed by the first week of December and warned of 4000 deaths a day, if a lockdown did not take place. Tory backbenchers continued to resist but the prime minister had no other option but to call for the lockdown. The fact that Germany and France decided on a national lockdown gives Boris Johnson the cover he needed in his own party.

The 2018 budget deal brings Democrats and Republicans together by increasing defense and domestic spending both by about 10%. Spending caps are to be lifted by $500 billion over 2 years with 60% of this going to defense spending increases to bolster America's defense capabilities. Defense spending is a top priority for Republicans.  For Democrats this means staving off some cuts in Medicaid and Medicare, more college affordability funding, and 4 year extension of the Children's Health Insurance program that had expired, funding community health centers for another 2 years.

This also shows that both sides can reach agreement even with divisive rhetoric and serious differences over policies.

President Trump says TikTok app would be banned in the U.S. after September 15. He said he had talked to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and told him Microsoft could buy the apps U.S. operations but if it does so a substantial portion of the price must go to the U.S. Treasury because of the approval of the deal the U.S. is giving after the review. He told Nadella "Look it can't be controlled for security reasons by China- too big,too invasive. Here's the deal, I don't mind whether its Microsoft or somebody else, a big company, a secure company, a very American company buy it."

For decades without the leadership needed and the collaboration of the entire tech sector and health systems the goal of getting a patients record on the computer or on a phone app anywhere in the US across all health systems was out of America's grasp. This was happening even in countries such as Indonesia and India which were vastly improving health outcomes through their apps of patient health records available across the entire country. The US finally is making that effort which should help not only treat patients but give patients better control of their food, alternative ideas on what to eat and for exercise, other ways to improve their health. CMS Medical Records Interoperability Framework brings together 21 networks to align to it, 60 companies to work collaboratively, and 30 companies to try and improve patient health outcomes and their health in general. Tesla CEO Musk's politics is having some impact with endorsement of the AfD by Musk seen as interference in German elections. The Tesla Y is priced at $74,000 another hurdle for buyers. And now there are many rivals from Germany and China. In an expanding market Tesla has lost 60% in registrations in first half of 2025 showing how deeply. BYD of China has a entry model Dolphin Surf for $20,000 in Germany, and has increased sales by 290%. Still Chinese car makers will only have 12% of the EV market and it is VW that is a winner in the competitive market in Europe. VW has ID.3 Pure for under $30,000 and in 2026 plans ID.2 Pure for under $25,000. ...

The trade adjustment assistance bill failed to win passage in the U.S. House of Representatives with 86 Republicans and 40 Democrats in favor, and 303 members voting against it. The Republican leadership passed a bill that gives the president trade negotiating authority without the trade adjustment assistance legislation and this passed the House in 219 to 211 vote. The Senate earlier passed legislation with the trade adjustment assistance included in fast track trade negotiating authority, making it necessary for the Senate to pass a new bill similiar to the House excluding trade adjustment assistance.

Mr. Acton and Mr. Koum, co-founders of Whats App messaging service have left the company after disagreements with Mr. Zuckerberg of Facebook. They say they had no intention of seeing Whats App turning into a clearing house for ads. Initially following the acquisition there was an agreement that advertising would not be the focus for Whats App, and the Whats App founders were given a large degree of autonomy. This has changed as Facebook uses data it collects to target audiences for ads on its services.
