In asignificant shift Apple is moving aggressively to hire chip engineers from other firms like AMD, and from high tech firms that are closing like memory chip company Spansion Inc., in addition to the acquisitions acquisition of P.A. Semi and other smaller companies. Thie goal is to develop new technology that would power new features for the iPhone and iPod, which competitors do not have access to. So while other tech firms are trimming, Apple is using its stronger financial position to go out and build up astrong in-house capability to develop its own chips and software to create new features exclusive to Apple. P.A. engineers are to help create ARM-based chips to improve performance and battery life of future iPhones. LinkedIn, anetworking site, shows100 people with Apple titlesand past expertise in chips with Intel, Samsung, Qualcomm and other companies. Additional job postings aggregated by site Indeed.com show recent postings for handwriting recognition technology, chip expertise for managing displays. Chief Technology Officers at AMD's graphics products group Koduri and Drebin have joined Apple. In the past Apple relied on Samsung for ARMHoldings licensed chip designs, ARM based microporocesor with custom features developed by Apple. Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO, says he wants Apple to acquire expertise and technology to run increasingly sophisticated software for iPhones and iPods, "You just can't go out and buy the chips off the shelf to do that," says Jobs....

Takeda Pharmaceutical is negotiating the acquisition of Swiss drugmaker Nycomed for about $14 billion. Takeda has cash reserves of $10.8 billion and will be using this to fund the acquisition, as well as loans from banks. The strong yen has made acquisitions easier for Japanese companies. Takeda's Prevacid ulcer treatment and the Actos diabetes treatment have both expired. A generic launch of Actos is expected in August 2011. Takeda bought the U.S. unit of Millenium Pharmaceutical in 2008 for $8.9 billion for a significant presence in the oncology field. Takeda projects a drop in net profit by April 2013 by 35%, and sales by 11%, for the fiscal year 2013. Takeda's president says it will make investments in China of about 20-30 billon yen and target a ten fold increase in sales in China to 30 billion yen by 2015.

Romney and Santorum in a tie, with Romney winning by just 8 votes in Iowa's Republican caucuses. Romney got 23.6%, Santorum 23.5%, Ron Paul 21%, Gingrich 13% and Perry 10%. Romney received almost the same number of votes he won in 2008.

Boeing deals with supplier delays as suppliers around the world have themselves outsourced some of their work to other suppliers which Boeing had not expected or in some cases decided to let the suppliers handle the way they best saw fit. Global outsourcing was supposed to be an improved and faster method of putting together a new airplane and Boeing still thinks that when the problems are worked out this will hold true. Meantime Boeing is throwing money and engineers almost $2 billion to help suppliers iron out these problems. Airbus also faces production problems from Europe wide outsourcing and coordinating between the German and French parts of Airbus who had difficult working together with differnet styles approaches and methods which was resolved by having the French group help the German group to come upto speed as documented earlier this year in the Wall Street Journal. ECB president Mario Draghi, announces a plan to buy $1 trillion of public and private bonds in the eurozone between March 2015 and the fall of 2016, with purchases of 60 billion euros each month. This includes government bonds, debt securities issued by European institutions, and private sector bonds.

IHS reports show the cost of making the Galaxy S 4 smartphone with 16 gigabytes of flash memory is about $244. This is 15% more than the cost for the Galaxy III and 17% more than Apple iPhone 5 with 16 gigabyte memory. Higher cost is due to better sensors, a better processor, and larger full high-definition display for upgrades. Samsung plans to launch the new phone in April 2013 in 155 countries. Unlike Apple Samsung does its own manufacturing providing it an edge in hardware capabilities.
