U.S. companies are required to use a discount rate that reflects current corporate bond yields for future pension liabilities for workers. The low interest rate environment supported by the Fed increases these liabilities. Some companies including Ford Motor see increases in the liabilities even though steps are taken to reduce the amount on the balance sheet. This is a major problem for companies with defined benefit plans- for Ford, GM, Chrysler, Boeing, Dow Chemical, Verizon, AT&T and other large companies. Ford plans to put $5 billion in its pension fund in 2013, close to what it will spend on plants, equipment and developing new models. In 2012 Ford's unfunded pension liability increased to $18.7 billion. Ford reduced pension liabilities by $1.2 billion through buyouts for salaried workers. Having to reduce the discount rate from 4.6% to 3.84% ended up increasing Ford's liabilities for pensions on the balance sheet. Boeing faces a similiar problem.It plans to put $1.5 billion in cash in the fund to reduce unfunded liabilities in 2013, following $1.6 billion it put in 2012. This still leaves the unfunded pension liabilities at 26% for Boeing....

Inflation slows to 3.2% for October 2023, and decelerates from 3.7% in the prior month. Moderate energy prices contributed, so did lower used car prices and lower airline fares. It is also broad based decline which makes it sustainable. Biden says- "I am fighting every single day for lowering costs to hardworking families." It reduces the pressure on the Fed to raise interest rates further. Inflation in food, bakery products and fruits and vegetables was 0.2 percent and apartment rental at 0.5 percent, electricity at 0.3% making it truly broadbased. This points to major progress on inflation, that adds to gains in low unemployment that have not been seen for decades. Wage gains for workers after the UAW agreement are spreading to other companies and industries which provides cost of living relief for workers and families across the 51 states for 2024. Safety lapses at Southwest show that a Southwest maintenance person and an FAA officer at the local FAA office were involved in failure to conduct certain timely inspections on 46 older model aircraft. The local FAA office allowed Southwest to continue making 1400 flights while the safety structural inspections were being made contrarty to FAA rules.

The Dutch parliament approves a free trade area with Ukraine. Netherlands was the last country to approve this agreement. Populists of eusoskeptic views won a referendum in April 2016 leading to the agreement passed by the other 27 countries of the EU being modified to accomodate the euroskeptics- who pushed the view of Ukraine as another corrupt country that Netherlands tax payers would have to support. The agreement for a free trade area for EU and Ukraine itself was a result of the popular sentiment in Kiev and western Ukraine in favor of closer ties to the European Union, that led to protests in 2013-2014 and the election of pro-EU Petroshenko as president. Russia opposed the move, leading to the support of a Russia rebel movement in the eastern part of Ukraine. The Dutch elections of 2017 led to Dutch voters supporting prime minister Rutte's effort to support the European Union in helping Ukraine with economic ties. This puts Netherlands back into the core EU nations such as France, Germany, Spain and Italy, that back Ukraine and oppose Russian moves. ...

GPS and 3D would tell each plane the prcise location of other planes no need for all the radar towers and all that chattering back and forth. Look at the impact on gas mileage- just from this perspective it appears odd that the US government has not invested in modernization of the nations air traffic system's technology. The USA is today using outdated technology to mange its air traffic. Worst of all its costing a lot in wasted fuel and in extra emissions. GPS allows planes to fly straighter routes. Savings? On a NYCity to Boston flight this straighter route saves about 30% fuel, mileage and flight time. Thats huge savings benefiting airlines, passengers and the environment. These saving increase when you take out all the extra fuel consumed circlingin the skies as the descent is in steps. With NextGen the system the US is adopting will let a plane descend in a straight flight path with minimal engine thrust. A key part of this system is ADS-B for automatic dependent surveillance-brodcast, which gives every plane its own digital brain and voice. ...

At the end of 2007 Southwest had 520 aircraft with an average age of 9.4 years. One way to keep maintenance expenses low would be to upgrade its fleet and Southwest is going to retire oler planes faste and take new ones from Boeing plants. Ths year it will take 22 new planes and this should accelerate. Outsourcing maintenance is less likely in the new climate of inspections after recent lapses.

Dennis Muilenburg succeeds Jim McNerney as CEO of Boeing in July 2015. He is former head of Boeing's defense and space business. Muilenburg's challenges include reducing costs on the 787 Dreamliner, and adapting its defense business to the situation of cuts in U.S. defense spending for reducing the deficit.
