As China shifts away from construction to support the economy no government support is given to real estate company Evergrande to reorganize it operations. Evergrande has $300 billion in debt and its sprawling operations all over China will now be dismantled. The decision is made in an Hong Kong courtroom on the 12th floor of the Hong Kong Court Building as reported by Alexandra Stevenson of the NYT. China is now moving away from the economic support of internet companies such as Tencent and Alibaba and construction firms such as Evergrande. More investment is going into renewable energy and companies that are leading in technologies such as BYD in electric cars worldwide. Investment is also being made in funding improvement in standards of living in the rural interior of the country that was neglected during the boom years and in tackling climate change. A new terminal is taking shape at 41st st and 8th Ave. in New York City. This is the new $10 billion Port Authority Bus Terminal. NYT taks a look at the design of this new terminal that will replace one that had become old and haggard looking. Port Authority officials say the old building was a rundown 1950's era building that was a poster child for a failed infrastructure facility. The NYT says this brick building darkened two full blocks of midtown Manhattan. In its place will be a a brighter open looking space that is state of the art and has 2 office towers. Much of the US infrastructure was built in the period of the 1950's and 1960's. Much of it is crumbling and old, and the investment taking place step by step under the Biden plan for rebuilding infrastructure with trillions of dollars in investment is working. Construction will take 8 years by 2032 with coronavirus pandemic delay figured in. President Biden made the decision to allow about half a million Venezuelan migrants who cannot be deported because US has no diplomatic relations with that country, to work legally. In New York half of the 100,000 migrants who arrived there in 2023 are putting too much pressure on the social safety net, a crisis for the school's shelter system, schools and budget. New York Democrats lobbied heavily for a change in the system. Mr.Biden made the decision to allow the Venezuelan migrants to be able to work legally. NY Mayor Adams and NY Governor Kathy Hochul lobbied heavily. The city had to house 60,000 migrants and it imposed a strain on the system. It was estimated to cost $12 billion for the city over a number of years. In the long run it will help New York State and the US with shortages of workers, yet in the short run the Republicans and immigration skeptics are protesting the arrival of migrants. Turning Open AI into for profit after starting as a supposedly altruistic tendency venture has opened new fault lines in the company with many people leaving. The AI is now becoming a kind of gold rush with companies putting huge price tags on talent and committing some of the nation's limited capital resources into directions that lead to the massive waste that led to economic crises in the 1930's. It is reported that it will put major stress on the grid and on electricity resources and that Tech companies do not want to pay for this. Tampa Bay area is one of the ten most high risk areas in the world, according to the World Bank. Estimates of damage from a severe hurricane are as high as $175 billion in a 2015 study. The Washington Post's Anna Phillips looks at this region which has grown by about 200 percent in the last two decades. Pinellas County home to St Petersburg and Clearwater, Tampa Bay area, now has 3.2 million people. Developers are lulled into a sense of complacency, says this report with the lack of severe hurricanes in recent decades. The last time a severe hurricane hit was 1921.  This area has 700 miles of shoreline. The problem is that sea levels are rising from climate change, Tampa Bay area has 5 inches of sea level rising, plus the Bay area water is shallower. Water pushed into the narrow area of Tampa Bay would likely rise further. This causes the most damage from waves and floods. Sea levels are higher in 2023 compared to 2009 by 7 inches in Charleston SC, Wilmington NC, Galveston Texas, and in Tybee Island Georgia.   ...

This report in WSJ looks at the Biden education, healthcare and climate change plan. It is part of the Families and Workers Plan put forward by president Biden for $3.6 trillion. This figure has now been lowered to $2 trillion and may drop crucial provisions for education such as the cost free community college which poses serious risks for working class families unable to afford community college, and skews education access even further to higher income families. It also lowers college attendance of American men, which is falling to alarming levels. The reason the plans are being whittled down is the 50-50 split between Democrats and Republicans in the Senate and the failure of Republicans and two Democrat senators Manchin of West Virginia, Sinema of Arizona to support community college access. Parts of the current bill support child care, access to affordable housing and in home care for elderly Americans. New elections for Senate and House of Representatives in 2022 would have to settle the issues related to financing assistance for families and workers as the Senate today is divided 50-50 between Democrats and Republicans. A separate Bipartisan Infrastructure package has the support of all in the US Congress to build bridges and roads, other infrastructure badly neglected by different administrations over the last 2 decades. ...

WSJ Board criticism of DJT Tariffs paints a picture different from what is happening at a time when the president needs support to change the rules of world trade so that there is a level playing field for everyone. First Japan and then China have begun and pursued a course that uses the international trading system set up after 1945 to their advantage resulting in the deindustrialization of the US and Europe since the 1980's. WSJ's own reporting in July shows the inflation is subdued at about 2%. The president's jawboning or moral suasion has worked so that retailers such as Walmart have actually reduced prices on basic products and all retailers including Amazon and Target have cut prices on the more expensive products where their margins are larger. One WSJ report shows Amazon increased prices on products that were made in the US, as its own form of jawboning so that Amazon would get the point. It also belittles the extraordinary effort of Bessent and Jamieson as trade negotiators in getting the deal with Japan for $550 billion. It says DJT was lucky to get the deal when it is clear that Japan is returning the US the favor the US did to Japan, as a true ally should do, aside from US defense of Asia. ...

Only 12% of Americans take the minimum daily recommended fruit for healthy living, and only 9% of Americans take the minimum daily recommended vegetables, according to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The minimum for fruit is daily taking one and half cups fruit. For vegetables it is daily taking two to three cups of vegetables. Women consume a bit more at 15% for fruit. An interesting finding in this study that explains the widespread obesity in the U.S. regardless of incomes is that of affluent and wealthy Americans only about 12% consume enough vegetables. This is very close to the percentage of poor people eating the recommended 2-3 cups of vegetables a day, which is at 7%. This is an alarming fact in that all sections of society are doing very badly, creating acatastrophic effect for healthcare. A diet without fruits and vegetable brings higher rates of obesity, cancer, heart disease, diabetes. If rich and poor upper middle class and lower middle class are all sharing the same lack of awareness it points to the lack of education in eating right as the big culprit. This is one area where government, universities, and the informed private sector, can change things if they wanted to. A challenge as big as that in literacy and education for the U.S. Alarmingly even though it is in the top ten read articles in the Guardian newspaper online edition on November 16, 2017, we checked the other sites. We could not find it under Health in CNN, where other topics such as sexual harrassment, and sugar cravings, were covered. NBC covered a different CDC report showing 71% of Americans are overweight or obese with BMI over 25, but made no mention of this report by CDC. Equally alarming is the statistic cited in the Guardian from the Union of Concerned Scientists that shows only 2% of American farmland is used to cultivate fruits and vegetables. That this would have to go up at least to 4% if all Americans are to get their daily required fruits and vegetables. Meanwhile little change is to be seen, and no alarm bells are ringing in the U.S.. These facts are hardly mentioned in any healthcare discussion in media, as if they can be ignored or shoved under the carpet. This is the kind of thing that will never go viral, as a discussion on sexual harrassment or some other topic would, yet deserves just as much attention and education. ...

It shows the culture of creating hype and so called buzz behind startups that was lauded in business culture but has led to massive capital misallocation away from essential needs of society for infrastructure, health services, and education, investing in new technologies at home and fighting climate change. Many such situations are recorded in the pages of the WSJ, of hype and huge losses for investors in the last decade when some of the most egregious behaviour happened. Along with this was the acceptance in the business culture of shipping jobs and technology overseas, then shipping products halfway across the globe what could be easily be made in the home country- leading to a loss of control over the future and with it a loss of hope. The WSJ says the trial was a referendum on how Silicon Valley startups raise cash, with the jury finding Holmes guilty on 4 counts. The pandemic has led to rethinking and going back to basics, discarding all the unessentials or self-harm behaviours.  ...

He says the business review meetings are focussed on talking about problems and how to help others solve the problems. It is about bringing a company wide network focussed on solving problems by helping everybody. To do this listening is critical, and side talk at meetings is not allowed by having the meeting stop and looking at the managers doing side talk. The new culture is now built into the audit process to keep the right behaviours in place. Mulally is confident that Mark Fields will be able to continue the cultural change he has brought about at Ford Motor. Ford's investment in the F-150 aluminium type truck and its large invesment in China, are long term investments that are making good progress. In China the automobile market is still expected to grow at 7-8%, says Mulally, even as GDP growth slows down. The costs on the aluminium truck are expected to come down over time with cost efficiencies, learning curve and volume....

Motorola considers selling its handset business, or some other arrangement to separate it from its other businesses. It has fallen behind as competitors launched phones with new features and sleeker designs like the iPhone from Apple and Nokia's new line of phones, with a whole set of new features and careful attention to customers future needs, constantly staying ahead of the curve. Motorola has had one shot hits like the recent Razr phone but has not had the management vision, leadership and structure to keep ahead of the changing customer needs and development of new technologies- which together have created new kinds of phones and new designs for different market segments in different countries. The companies successful in such an industry have to have mangement direction, capabilities and drive and speed to keep coming up with new features and combinations of features for different sets of customers in different countries. New technologies mean faster internet access, iPhone type features, exchanging pictures, being able to see internet information on their phones and changes every year or two years. The nature of this industry requires companies to stay ahead of technologies and customers, and have good people on the field who can help you understand the changing markets in each region. This includes designers and technology access, with execution abilities and people to do it who can put it all together, again and again each time the customers needs change and the market takes a new turn. Nokia has in contrast to Motorola stayed ahead of the game. Even if it has missed a step it has regained the momentum quickly, and set up a structure of people that can generate the new phones customers want before other companies. Here Motorola is having a free fall in market share and no product to meet the competition at least not till the end of this year, a long time in this fast paced industry....
