Unacceptable is that American men in their 20's and 30's are falling behind women in their 20's and 30's, in education and in economic prospects, says this report in WSJ. More young men are living with their parents than young women. As this report shows men are more dependent on manufacturing, women are more dependent on remote work, one more reason manufacturing is so important for our economy. In ways economists with specialized macroeconomic knowledge and statistical approach don't get what requires an overall knowledge and understanding of how the economy works when it works well for the People and the Nation. As a result what is not true for young women is true for young men, that this generation of young men see fewer opportunities than their parents did. This is a central task of a Harris administration- to address this, one of the unacceptables including fentanyl and for orderly immigration, loss of manufacturing. For building US manufacturing that also plays right into opportunities for young people, and getting more young people into apprenticeships, one of the key pieces of Harris's economic platform. Simply lowering taxes won't do it- this generation is all about investing and doing this well and with the full power of America's resources. ...

The issue of how the deficit reduction will affect the middle class, the poor, and the elderly. Bernie Sanders says the Democrats Reid Plan and the Boehner plan both fail on this account. And he finds it incomprehensible that this is happening without similiar contributions from the higher income Americans, even though 72% of the American people- according to a July 14-17, 2011 Washington Post/ABC poll -want those earning more than $250,000 a year to pay more in taxes. And incomprehensible says Sanders that Congress is debating the Reid and Boehner plans that exempt higher income Americans from their fair share of the burden.

Martin Feldstein says China is gaining control of three problems it faces of shrinking export markets, the effects from a large stimulus in response to the 2008 financial crisis, and inflation especially high real estate prices. The economy is shifting to higher role for services and less dependence on exports under the new five year plan. The real estate prices are levelling off after steep increases. And inflation is under control. New investment will go into infrastucture needs such as power development and low income housing. As the economic problems are being tackled, the political problems remain. China faces an aging population under its one child policy, and it will have to support an increasing number of retired people in the future. Inequality and corruption are two problems that continue to grow and present challenges to the new leadership taking over in 2013.

In this interview in The Hindu with Public Health Foundation of India president Srinath Reddy, the importance of safe behaviours including masks and social distancing, public discipline to tackle a potential third wave. This was also pointed out separately by the Director AIIMS.  Mr. Reddy says study by Public Health England shows just one dose of Astra Zeneca vaccine is not very effective against the Delta variant- about 30% effective. As a result he suggests the need to reduce the spacing intervals which are at 8-12 weeks to a shorter interval now that adequate supplies of vaccine will be available starting in July and August till the end of the year. The initial spacing was 4 weeks when Astra Zeneca vaccine was first introduced and at which time the variants had not emerged. The Indian federal government affidavit to the Supreme Court shows that 1880 million doses of vaccine will be available by the end of the year 2021 to vaccinate fully with 2 doses the population of India over 18 years using 5 locally manufactured Made in India vaccines. This does not include the mRNA vaccines that will be made available from Moderna and Pfizer for which cold storage facilities are being prepared by the federal government.   ...

The amount of cash companies are holding as a percentage of total assets is rising and is high has it has ever been since the 1960's. One study shows that the average cash ratio doubled from 1998 to 2004 as debt levels fell. According to S&P total cash held by compaies in its industrial index exceeded $600 billion in February up from 203 billion dollars in 1998. This was mentioned as a bright spot by Ben Bernanke amid the prevailing gloom about the credit crunch. But Prof Stulz and 2 other professors at Ohio State in a study show that this rise reflects the greater risk of doing business in a globalized economy and companies are holding higher levels of cash to reflect this. They hold smaller inventories and spending by tech companies which form a larger portion of the companies than before is more on research and development than on capital equipment. This shows up in the higher level of cash on hand for emergencies and as money for a rainy day.

Development of the C919 aircraft by the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (Comac). The C919 would compete with the Boeing 737 and the Airbus 320. China accounts for 22% of Airbus's orders and 15% of Boeing's orders. Comac has orders for 90 C919's from state owned airlines and two leasing companies. It also has help from suppliers GE and Honeywell. Says Bob Smith, chief technology officer of Honeywell, which has 4 joint ventures with Chinese companies to supply parts for aircraft projects from flight controls to wheels and brakes: "we are not just here to build an aircraft, we are here to build an industry." Zhang Xinguo, vice president of AVIC, a state owned company helping build the plane, says the government wants to see jumbo jets, regional planes, business jets, helicopters, all made in China by Chinese companies.

Peter Schiff says home prices are still too high. They would have to decline another 20% just to fit the long term trend line indicated by the Case -Shiller index of an average 3.35% increase each year, based on long term historical data. He says economists underestimate how distorted the housing market has become, and how little it has normalized since 2008. This is based on average increase in home prices of 3.35% per year for the 100 years between 1900 and 2000, as determined by Yale economist Robert Shiller, which is just a bit above the average rate of inflation. Taking the January 1998 10 city index of 82.7 and following the 3.35% annual trend line, he says the index would be at 126.7 in October 2010. Case-Shiller showed that it was 159.0 for October 2010. Schiff uses this to show that the market needs to drop by 20.3% from the current level to get back to the trend line. He says that the home buyers tax credit, record low interest rates, and the increased presence of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and the Federal Housing administration have for now put a floor on housing prices. Conditions in the US housing market with high inventories, the high unemployment, savings depletion and debt, point to this overshooting by 5-10% on the downside. Hon Hai, a Chinese company which makes IPads and IPhones for Apple has grown by doing high quality work for lower prices than anyone else. In the process Hon Hai has generated a culture that is tough even by Chinese standards. About 250,000 workers are employed in its factories in Shenzen alone. A series of suicides at the plant has attracted attention to the tough conditions. One worker says conversation on the production line is banned, bathroom breaks are limited to 10 minutes for every 2 hours, and the discipline is strict. Hon Hai won Apple's order says one supply-chain search expert, by pricing low. Its CEO Gou was willing to sell some components at zero profit according to people familiar with his actions. Workers come from rural areas, are very young, the first time they are away from their families, and live in dormitories, eight to ten people to a room. Hon Hai's response is to increase wages 30%. But a report about a college graduate who was asked about conditions reflects the general feeling. This graduate makes twice as much in product development, at 2000 yuan a month, or $293 a month. But the monotonous life and the feeling of no future affects this worker and may be a sign of something changing in China's factories. The unwillingness to accept the conditions that existed in the past....

Declining sales in 2015 at Subway sandwich chain stores and lower profits for franchise owners, following overexpansion. Sales at U.S. Subway chain stores declined by 3.3% to $11.9 billion, acccording to Technomic Inc. There are about 27,000 Subway stores in the U.S. compared to 14,300 McDonald's stores, and the saturation appears to be hurting sales and profits, say experts. The system setup by Doctor's Inc. which started Subway incentivizes expansion.

Apple offers a new way to buy iPhones directly from Apple with financing in September 2015. This will change the way iPhones are sold, giving more control over the sale of iPhones to Apple. It will enable Apple to stabilize core sales for iPhones by encouraging upgrades every year. The monthly payments are $32.41 for 2 years for the cheapest iPhone. Apple is taking aim at the average upgrade time which is increasing- it went up to 26.3 months in 2015 from 18.2 months in 2010, according to a telecom consultant. With the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus sales surged for Apple in the first 3 quarters of 2015 by 50% from the prior year period. It will be harder for Apple to generate this kind of sales increase as the new iPhones introduced in September 2015- the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus have better cameras and "3-D Touch," only incrementally different. A 16 gigabyte iPhone 6s would cost $778, about the same as the $649 price and Apple Care coverage of $129. The way iPhones were sold through wireless carriers kept the price hidden with higher wireless service charges- 2 years of a Verizon wireless 3 gigabye data plan ended up costing users twice the amount of the $649 price of the iPhone. Now the competition among wireless carriers will shift to pricing cuts and changing their pricing strategies. The result of the changes is likely to be increasing shifts from one carrier to another as Apple allows direct buyers to choose the carrier they want....

Something that could have been used by a Lehman instead of being forced to liquidate quickly and suddenly. Subsequent costly attempts by the Fed and Treasury to prevent a Lehman style collapse with costly bailouts of AIG and Citigroup and other firms, were also not a desirable alternative.
