Many of the coups in Iraq and Syria and in Egypt by military men were a result of this period of colonial rule in the Arab world in Iraq, Syria, and other Middle Eastern countries of the French and the British. The anti-colonial writings of this period had one bad aspect the fervor led to an uncritical acceptance of the idea that achieving political independence would be enough for better standards of living, education healthcare and infrastructure. Economic freedoms would require a very different approach from the political aspect. These wars destroyed much of the resources, wealth and human other potential in the Middle East leading to economic stagnation by 2026. Gulf kingdoms with small populations pursued grandiose schemes, with the rest of the Middle East stuck in poverty and lack of industrialization, lack of infrastructure development, sience and technological education, that happened in China and South Korea, and is happening now in India. Iraq and Syria, Lebanon are artificial states by the French and British colonial rulers out of the collapsed Arab part of the Ottoman Empire which with their mix of peoples from different Islamic sects are impossible to manage to this day, and the world (China, US, EU, India, Brazil, other nations) has other priorities of their own than getting sucked into these wars. ...

One day in 1964 Oxford mathematician Roger Penrose decided that an impossible object could actually exist - a black hole in the galaxy after a planet collapses.Einstein's theory of relativity had predicted that when stars collapse they could form infinitely dense points of matter that no light would be allowed to escape. The formation of black holes supports Einstein's Theory of Relativity says the Nobel Prize Committee. Penrose is 89 and says it is good to get the Nobel Prize when one is good and old. Stephen Hawking a younger physicist passed away and was not included in the prize after supporting Penrose's work. Two astronomers in the U.S. at UCLA, Los Angeles, get a quarter of the prize for their work detecting black holes in the sky and providing evidence of a super massive black hole in the center of our galaxy. Toyota's hybrid strategy is to make it difficult for other automakers to develop their own hybrids wihtout getting licensing from Toyota. Ford did this for its Escape hybrid, and Nissan is doing this for its Altima hybrid. Toyota has meticulously filed patents for more than 2000 systems and components for its Prius hybrid. Toyota aslo aims at increasing revenues through licensing. Honda has developed its own hybrid without infringing on Toyota's patents, but other companies may choose to license Toyota's technology. Other companies are also achieving high fuel efficiency through diesel technology and by developing highly fuel efficient technologies that match the Prius.

The terms of the bailout loan to GM and Chrysler prohibit a threat to strike or a strike by the UAW during the negotiations with GM that take place between now and Feb 17, 2009. These are the terms between the Treasury Department and GM. Smaller strikes at GM and a longer strike at American Axle and Manufacturing cost the supplier and GM billions of dollars in cash at a perilous time for GM, showing that steps by the union have not been in the interests of the union and its workers in the long run. Saudi Vision 2030 goals scaled back in 2026 as Saudis and UAE face missile attacks on oil facilities and pipelines. Saudis and UAE, Iraq are working on building new pipelines on east west coasts to bypass Hormuz Straits. Oil could go through to Turkey or Jordan. 

Another key development is the realization in India, China and European Union that renewable energy goals need to be accelerated. This is a positive development coming out of this crisis and will shift the energy equation entirely out of the Middle East. Revised auto fuel efficiency standards win the support of GM, Ford, Chrysler, Honda and Hyundai. These standards would lower the average fuel economy to 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025, a decline from the initial target of 56.2 mpg. The revised proposal calls for a 5% average annual increase in fuel economy for cars and a 3.5% increase for light trucks through 2021. After 2021 both cars and trucks have to meet a 5% annual increase. Useful innovation in the new standards is to provide credits for hybrid pickup trucks, and give credits for technological advances that improve fuel economy but don't show up in EPA tests such as the one that shuts of the engine when a car is idling. Other credits would be offered for solar roof panels on electric vehicles. It includes incentives for "promoting early market penetration of tailpipe CO2/fuel consumption reducing technologies." This comes after a long period in which the U.S. lagged behind other countries in fuel economy. It could be one of the main achievements of the Obama administration, and help build a new auto industry around new technologies....

Mr. Trump proposes a 10% tariff on all goods imported into the US at Columbia, South Carolina, says this report in WSJ. A universal tariff of this type is similar to Herbert Hoover's Smoot Hawley that brought on the Great Depression in the 1930's in outright beggar thy neighbor policies which don't work, says WSJ. This opinion describes the impact of such a tariff in failing to reverse the trade deficit which is $951 billion in 2022, but fails to point to the lack of effectiveness of tariffs alone in bringing back American manufacturing jobs. As president Biden has pointed out the Trump administration made much talk about returning American jobs but did not accomplish much for American manufacturing to lead the world in the way the Biden administration has done. To do this the Biden administration passed laws to fund a entire new electric car industry, renewable energy industry, and promoting other industries in advanced technologies, including aerospace, to bring back America's leadership in manufacturing of most of the twentieth century with a bold vision for the future. Mr. Trump lacks the experience on this issue and is simply playing the rhetoric to his base without any plan to deliver the goods to sections of the American public that have already suffered the most from decades of neglect of manufacturing by Republicans going back to Reagan and Bush, Democrats Clinton and Obama. ...
