According to areport by the Manufacurer's Alliance/MAPI USA manufacturing output is expected to decline by 12% this year. Steel production fell 61% in the first quarter over prior year, motor vehicles and parts dropped 41% and semiconductors dropped 40%. Medical equipment production was up 2% in the first quarter, and communications gear production up 6%. THe chief economist of MAPI, Mr Mecksworth, says when the economy turns and depleted inventories are replaced growth will still be slow, because companies will be saving money and paying off debt for many years. In his words the whole deleveraging of the economy will depress the growth rate.

Novartis bought form Nestle SA a 25% stake in Alcon for $11 billion with an option to buy Nestles's remaining 52% holding in 2010 and combine its eye care operations with Alcon's. But there is uncertainty about how this will work out and at what price Nestle will sell as share price of Alcon has dropped. This leaves Novartis in a bind when it comes to other acquisitions as it has to raise and set aside capital to complete the Alcon acquisition. Novartis raised $5.5 billion in debt in February 2009, and $2.2 billion in a bond sale in June, and will raise more capital.

Porsche sales for the 9 month period August 2008 to April 2009, fell by 28%, to 53,635 vehicles, with revenue down 15% to 4.64 billion euros. The better revenue numbers are due to a larger sales proportion of the higher margin 911 model. Sales were down in all regions of the world. Porsche's net debt has tripled to 9 billion euros after an attempt to take over full control of VW. It owns 51% of VW shares. Porsche is looking for Quatar investment funds, and is trying to get a 1.75 billion euro loan from state controlled bank KfW to reduce its debt load.

Banco Santander, Brazil, sold 600 million units at a price of 23.5 reais each, according to a filing with Brazil's regulator. With each unit representing 55 common shares and 50 preferred shares. The offering was increased from a planned 525 million to 600 million units so that investor demand could be met. Santander's US traded stock was priced at $13.50 each. Santander following a series of acquisitions is Brazil's third largest bank after Itau Unibanco and Bradesco, having a 10.2% market share. It is also the largest IPO for Brazil. The growing demand for emerging market securities is evident in the rate at which the Bovespa Brazil Index jumped in 2009.

A Brookings study points out that in the USA we seem to have forgotten how important a part infrastructure built in the last hundred years has played in our development. Felix Rohatyn points out in his book "Bold Endeavours," that the national infrastructure is falling apart. and Bob Herbert of the NYT casts a look at all the dilapidated infrastructure in the USA from the 70 year old Sann Francisco -Oakland Bay Bridge to bridges over the Mississipi river, and other infrastructure that is coming apart, and asks people to imagine a different world where we are fixing and building things around us. Legislation advanced by Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois would allow bankruptcy judges to lower principal and interest rates on mortgages and extend the loan period. Of 10 million homeowners who are having trouble making payments new bankruptcy law changes would help 800,000 troubled borrowers keep their homes, according to Mark Zandi, chief economst at Moody's Economy.com. With the government's loans of $45 billion to Citigroup it has more leverage on key banks in the banking industry. As a result Citigroup which had earlier opposed the change in bankruptcy laws to make this possible has now changed its stance. Vikram Pandit Citi's CEO stated yesterday that "we support its swift passage."

Social unrest in France from student unions and worker unions of the SUD and CGT. The effects of the higher joblessness with unemployment moving upward from 7.9% and expected to hit 10% in 2010, is showing up in strikes and worker action in the streets as well as student union protests. Because of the way hiring practices have evolved, a 2 tier labor market has developed with overly protected permanent jobs and flexible short term contract labor. Its the jobs in flexible short term contracts that are the first to go, and as they are concentrated among the young, the joblessness among young people in France is much higher.

In "Dead Aid," a book by a native of Zambia and World Bank consultant, Dambisa Moyo, she says about $ 1 trillion in aid has gone to Africa since independence began around 1960, and there is so little to show for it. IT has helped sustain corrupt regimes in Africa, and much of the last 50 years have been wasted, and in many areas it has been a humanitarian disaster. Her personal experience helps her write about this. Her mother is chairwoman of aZambian bank, and her father runs an anticorruption organization. She believes that economic growth is aprerequisite for democracy, and that democracy lasts longer as per capita income increases.

After carbon dioxide at 40%, black carbon at 18% is the No 2 cause of global warming on the planet earth. This black carbon is generated from thousands of villages in the develooping world and from countries like India, where village women cook food over stoves that burn twigs and dung, not having stoves to cook on. If they are provided with stoves that use fuel these black carbon emissions can easily and quickly be cut. This is also cuasing dense smoke to fill their homes and black grime to stick to the thatched huts and thatched roofs, and it puts ablack cloud over stretches of landscape in these villages.

One Laptop Could only bring the price down to $188. And Intel has a Classmate for $230. Microsoft offers a version of its Windows software and a small version of Office plus educational programs for $3. What this does is keep One Laptop from bringing Linux and AMD competitors of Intel and Microsoft out of the developing countries markets throughout the world. Intel and Microsoft definitely responded to the threat and countries in the developing world see the Intel Microsoft machines as definitely a winner over the One Laptop machine which is now floundering. It did help to bring about this change and in this sense Negroponte succeeded.

IBM in addition to rapidly upscaling its operations in India, adding 10,000 employees in 2007 alone for a total of 53,000 in India. This compares with 25,000 for all its Indian competitors combined. With its Pune facility attracting employees from its rivals. With $2 billion invested in R&D centers and 3000 engineers engaged in R&D. IBM in addition to this has gone after the Indian market getting about 10% of the domestic market with names like Bharti Airtel, DLF a real estate developer, Canara Bank, the Indian tax department, and so on. And it has done this when companies like Infosys have overlooked the Indian market.

As sales decline in the USA auto industry even the Japanese take a hit. Toyota sales down 10% in March 2008 compared with March 2007 only slightly less than the 12% for the US auto industry as a whole. About one assembly plant worth of idle capacity exists at Toyota. Sales declines at GM and Chrysler19%, at Ford 14%. In fact Shoichiro Toyoda visited Toyota's Indiana plant last October concerned about the idle capacity at the plant. See the link to this and Toyota's senior people like the honorary chairman were concerned about what is happening to Toyota fearing that Toyota may be facing some dangers and was getting complacent.

At the G7 meeting in Washington of finance ministers efforts to pitch Gordon Brown's plan to other G7 members. The British idea to expand its proposal to other countries has a lot of support on Wall Street and is being studied by officials at Treasury and US government officials. Under the British plan the government would guarantee upto 250 million pounds ($432 billion) in bank debt maturing in 36 months. It is also injecting capital into British banks in exchange for equity stakes. The government is also considering removing a ceiling on deposit insurance giving essentially unlimited protection to bank deposits to protect investors and banks seeing withdrawals from scared investors.

Automakers have huge problems servicing debt, with GM servicing $45 billion debt. Also all that inventory in trucks but also cars weighs heavily as cost for automakers, cars 28% overstocked, trucks 13% overstocked, as sales fall according to Credit Suisse analysts. And overseas bright spots are gone with global financial crisis. And Goldman estimates GM will use up $9 billion in 2009, and working capital cash balances need to be $11 to $14 billion. German exports to Russia are growing at a rate of 25% for the first quarter of 2008, according to Mangold of the Ost-Ausschuss, a group promoting trade with Russia, even though it is only 3% of all German exports. Russia- Germany trade has reached 57 billion euros for 2007. German exports to Russia are vital to the continued growth of the small and middle sized companies in Germany. About 4600 of these companies operate in Russia today. These companies produce chemicals, autos and machine tools. The promotion of this trade was the focus ofa conference in Dresden last month with top level officials from both countries.

As Dr Harsh Vardhan, India's representative and Health Minister, takes on responsibilities as the Chairman of the Executive Board of the World Health Organization this can be said about this critical juncture.The WHO is going through soul searching and a reevaluation of how it has implemented the vision of its founders during the closing years of a world torn apart  by war in 1945, and actual founding in 1946.  At the UN conference in San Francisco in 1945, Dr. Szeming Sze of China, Dr. Geraldo da Paula Souza of Brazil and Karl Ewang of Norway, were keen to set up an international organization for cooperation on health. The Indian representative was Arcot Ramaswamy Mudaliar, a member of Winston Churchill's War Cabinet, who chaired the committee on economic and social problems. He was the president of the Economic and Social Council which called for an international health conference in Feb. 1946. It was at that conference on 19 June 1946 that the World Health Conference came into being. A native of Madras he then returned to Mysore as chief minister. The vision at the time for international cooperation on problems such as smallpox which killed 2 million people each year were quite different from the fast moving epidemics with international travel in 2020. Today 4.4 billion passengers traveled by air in 2018, according to International Travel Association, 100 times compared to less than 40 million in 1950, and about 10 times the 400 million when Nixon's visit opened up China in 1972. The world we live in is different and the World Health Organization needs to be redesigned for the 21st century. The entire process of how the WHO operates has to be rethought. Immediate steps include- 1. The appointment by Executive Board should be reinstated as this is more representative of the world population and the major centres of advanced public health, including the major countries. Throughout its life the WHO made appointments through the Executive Board not by election. The election in 2019 by 200 countries was actually not representative of the world population as it gave India, Brazil and other early founders at the 1945-46 conferences only 1 vote each with population of 1.2 billion and 210 million, the same as tiny countries Barbados population 385,000 and Laos 7 million. 2. Reassessment of the entire process in which nations are requested to give permission of teams from major countries in Europe, North America and Asia, major population centres, so that the 6-7 week delay between the U.S. request to China for a special team to go to Wuhan on January 6, 2020 and the permission granted Feb 16, a costly delay of 7 weeks which added millions of cases and hundreds of thousands of deaths. In a super fast moving pandemic with international sports stadiums and 4 billion air passengers spreading it like wild fire around the world, there is little room for error, every day counts. Never should this happen again, as Dr. Sze Szeming China's representative said once in 1945 we must learn from mistakes, as mistakes were made in the years before World War II that were costly for China, India, North and South America, Other Asia, Africa, large population centres. 3. As was the effort then in 1946 and the early years, the effort to keep the staffing positions of leadership in the World Health Organization should be kept far from politics. Very experienced and capable people are needed from major countries with long records of public health experience and committed to the huge task, as was the vision of the founders.     ...

Iran War and rescue of pilot of downed F15-E in mountainous terrain in southern Iran April 4 2026. CSAR or Search and Rescue Missions become a critical part of the war. The pilot was a colonel trained for the mission and spent 24 hours in mountainous terrain which was monitored by US forces, after intelligence located him in a mountain crevice. For this to be possible unlike in the Vietnam War and Korean War other nations are not involved as in the earlier Cold War.  The US under DJT as president has shifted to respecting Russia as a Northern European power that it can talk with (meetings with Putin in Alaska 2025) and China as a trade partner (planned meeting in Beijing in April 2026) that it can talk with unlike with previous administrations of Biden, Obama and Bush where China had afree hand in economic matters and global trade and Russia was shut out of the world economic system by elites who ran the government in the US at that time. Russia seeks reintegration in the world political and economic systems, and China seeks acceptance as an economic power which the US respects, both points in which the US has offered to accept. US has also repeated the line to China that it was not going to do the job of keeping Hormuz open for China and Japan to get 90% of oil imports, and in oding so risk losing its soldier's lives, while China and Japan can quietly watch doing nothing to help free navigation of international waters. Note that the narrowest strip of water of 13 miles separates Oman from Iran so that a part of these waters are on the Omani side and not on the Iranian side making free use of that Omani part under international law possible- in which sense Iranian hostile activity closing the Omani side also is a violation of free navigation. This is not pointed out by Iran or Japan or even Britain who are benefitting from US action and remaining silent or being ambivalent or accusing US of being interventionist even when everyone knows MAGA base rejected Bush in the Republican party and the elites and embraced DJT for great part because they want nothing to do with interventionist adventures in the Middle East for certain. US is getting a bum rap from European allies and from China, India, Japan and the media inside the US and in those countries as if the US seeks oil from the Middle East. It was Britain where a lot of the posturing goes on about non intervention that started this oil based intervention since 1900 in Iran itself, and in artificial states of Iraq, Syria, that it created out of the collapsed Ottoman Empire in World War 1. Sykes and Picot were the US and French diplomats who set that up. US under DJT has accomplished self sufficiency in oil and US has no need for anything from the Middle East, no desire to even get involved, and MAGA well grasps that fact and wants to keep it that way. Only nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles with long range to hit US and EU are reason for US action, which is reason enough for EU, China, Russia to set their own goals so that non proliferation in dangerous areas is prevented. So that the people of China, Russia, India, Europe and the rest of the world can enjoy the fruits of their own labors after a century of severe hardships and struggles which the American people if not their elites respect, and the fruits of peaceful cooperation which the American people extend to the World, and to China, Russia and India. ...

DJT takes action sending in the Marines to Los Angeles to guard federal buildings, stop rioting June 10, 2025. At a White House briefing on fires including the fires in Los Angeles, US president DJT says the situation could have gone on for days as it did in Minneapolis when he acted after 7-8 days and the governor failed to call in the National Guard. DJT says he has seen this before and this is why he acted quickly before rioting destroyed the parts of Los Angeles that had survived the fires. 

Kristi Noem, the Homeland Secretary, a former governor, says action will be taken to enforce the nation's laws and that the comments by Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum that encouraged the protesters in contempt for US law enforcement were inappropriate and needed to be condemned.

Oil price drops by $5 in one day to $65 a barrel as Iran US/Israel ceasefire June 23, 2025 following the carefully measured Iran missile strike (14 missiles) strike on Qatar airbase with early warning to the US. The move was seen as a moderation shown by Iran, and DJT pursued the option of ceasefire with Qatar's mediation. An Israel Iran ceasefire is expected in the next 12 hours.

This closes a chapter of the nuclear weapons development proliferation pursued by Iran and blocked by Israel and the US. It started with Israel's strikes on Iran nuclear sites. 

This puts the attention back to the economy and completing the trade agreements under the Trump administration's tariffs and efforts to level playing field in world trade.

Deborah Liljegren, a 49 year old accountant working for an advertising firm, was laid off during the coronavirus first wave. She now works as a warehouse worker in 12 hour shifts at a warehouse near Lake Geneva in Illinois. She gets up at 4.50 am for a 30 mile drive to the Kenosha, Wisconsin, located warehouse, a 1 million square feet Amazon warehouse facility. She is by herself most of the day in a 10 foot long area where she takes hundreds of items an hour from containers and puts them in tall shelves on a robotic run container production line. During the lunch break she eats a 30 minute lunch of a sandwich and cup of Cheetos inside her Focus car in the parking lot. This is the only time she gets to herself. At 12.00 pm she starts a new shift till 6 pm. At 2.45 she gets a 15 minute break.  Liljegren says it is a totally different experience going from a white collar to a blue collar job. On a typical day she may sort 2000 items. The pay is $15 an hour. She decided to take the job  because it looked like it would take a long time for another job to be available. Liljegren is one of the millions of workers whose lives have changed after the coronavirus. While a small section of society of professionals continue to work from home and do not feel the economic effects of the pandemic, much larger parts of the people of each country are vulnerable to the impact of the first and second waves of the coronavirus. With the second wave comes more economic uncertainty, loss of jobs as some businesses close, and others layoff employees.  Government budgets are strained in November 2020 to provide the kind of stimulus provided in March 2020, leaving businesses of all sizes vulnerable.   ...

This report in NYT shows the movement of Mexicans who migrated to the US in the 1970's in an earlier migration and the problems they faced seeking a better life in America on the east and west coastal cities. In 1971 Ruperto and Eustacia Enriquez migrate from Puebla, Mexico to New York. They make two migrations within the US after a mugging incident in Brooklyn in 1980. First to Santa Ana, California where they find life difficult with gang crime in neighborhoods, and move to an affluent suburb in the east side of Seattle. Their son Daniel gets a Bachelors degree in philosophy from the University of Washington. In 1996 he returns to New York to study for a Masters degree in Latin American Studies at New York University.  After 25 years in New York and taking up a jobs two financial firms he reflects a strivers mentality, always looking for self-improvement. He helps his younger sister with an application to win a Fullbright scholarship in Germany. Another sister works in Washington as a business analyst. He helped a brother who became a school teacher in New York public schools. Daniel found an apartment in Park Slope, Brooklyn and by 2013 joined another financial firm in its global investment research group coordinating publications.  The story reflects some of the growing pains of Mexican Americans who migrated to America in the 1970's in the earlier migrations. In 2022 Daniel Enriquez 48 years was shot on the subway while going for Sunday Brunch, 25 years after returning to New York City. Crime was once again up in the city after the pandemic. 950 crime offenses happened in the subway system for the year till May the same as in 2019. Subway ridership was 40% lower in May this year.   ...

Technological progress is leaving more people unemployed and widening income gaps with the benefits going to a few people, says the Economist in this research based essay. It will require carefully managed governance to invest in infrastructure, raise skills of less skilled workers through education, and wage subsidies for those left behind to ensure our current system works in the future.
