In these states the number of Americans proud or embarrassed of the president shows a decline in support. Swiss bank UBS plans to make 10,000 job cuts in the next 3-5 years. Most of the job cuts will come at the investment banking operations which has 16,432 employees. Carsten Kengeter will be made chief of investment banking to concentrate on the downsizing effort. Andrea Orcel, who was brought in by new CEO Sergio Ermotti to be co-head of investment banking will run the remaining businesses of advising on mergers and equity underwriting. Trading businesses, especially fixed income, will be closed down. A third of the employees and 15 lines of business in the investment banking operation will be cut. The strategy is focus on businesses that do not require much capital to run and to build on its competitive advantages. This means focussing on its strong points in wealth management operations and the asset management division, which combined have $2 trillion under management. This move away from capital intensive business is part of an effort by Mr. Ermotti to dispel notions that UBS is not adequately capitalized. UBS suffered losses of $50 billion during the early part of the 2008 financial crisis, followed by the rogue bets by a trader in the London office leading to a loss of $2 billion in 2012. Following the most recent losses Sergio Ermotti was hired to replace Oswald Grubel in 2012. UBS now provides an example for other banks to overhaul their banking operations and downscale the importance and risks of investment banking....

A year long study by the Washington Post of all shootings by the the police in incidents of law enforcement in the U.S. shows only about 4% of the incidents involve police killing unarmed black persons. Yet a disproprotionate number of unarmed men shot are black or Hispanic- 3 of 5 people. The large majority of incidents involved people who were mentally troubled most of whom carried a weapon, persons carrying a weapon, or persons running from the police when asked to stop. The WP has compiled every police shooting in its database for analysis, something even the FBI does not have and is only now starting to put together. For police the hard part is when to know a certain behaviour such as reaching into the pocket after a police chase was harmless or risking the officer's life, as shown in a video carried by officer Lisa Mearkle in Hummelstown, Pennsylvania, for one of the shootings. Mearkle was acquitted by the jury.

An area of low pressure that breaks away from the jet stream that should blow it away formed in the Gulf of Cadiz. In weather parlance it is called a cutoff low. When this moisture laden air hits the mountains it forms clouds that dump torrential rain on coastal areas.

The warmer the Mediterranean is more of it evaporates, this years it was warmest in record. The warming Arctic adds to this by weakening the jet stream that can blow this off, say scientists.

Spotify acquires podcasting firms to broaden its appeal and acquire nonmusic content including listening time on radio. Spotify thinks it can bring to nonmusic content podcasts what it has done for music by bringing better curation, customization and recommendation, while developing tools and collecting data for podcasters. Talk enhances the experience of listening to music, says Spotify CEO Daniel EK.  Spotify aims to take some of the two hours people listen to radio globally and make money off of it. Ek says video is a bout $1 trillion market, and music plus radio $100 billion, but he questions whether our eyes are worth 10 times as much as our ears." Adding more monetization opportunities is key. Spotify says it has seen that podcasts command an engaged audience- people who see podcasts spend twice as much time using the service, and tend to stream more live music. They are less likely to cancel subscriptions.  Spotify has 206 million users and 96 million subscribers. Catalans formed a 400 kilometer human chain from the foothills of the Pyrenees to the Mediterranean to show their support for a secession referendum on Catalonia's independence from Spain. About 1.6 million people are said to have participated according to Catalan government officials. Spain's central government seeks to delay the issue to 2016 because of the financial crisis and high unemployment in Spain. The Convergence and Union Party of Arturo Mas takes a moderate position on this issue citing the concerns of the the government in Madrid, and the the ERC party which is the second largest party is firm about its demand for Catalan independence. Sentiment in Catalonia favors more autonomy, and a better deal for Catalonia in finances from the central government. Spain has setup a decentralized system of government following the long period of Franco's dictatorship, when Catalan language and culture were suppressed.

The shift of higher income people from California to Reno, and the building of a mega Tesla plant in the area have pushed up housing costs. The population of Reno in Washoe County increased by 25 percent or 100,000 since 2019. With casino hotels the employees incomes lag behind high grocery costs. Housing takes a larger share of the household budget so that many people are living on the edge. One retiree sees rent for a 2 bedroom home go up to $1600, leaving $600 for groceries. He uses a mobile food bank parked outside a middle school. Food bank officials says they serve 155,000 people, up 70% since 2019. A retired electrician says his electric bill has doubled to $300 leaving less from a $1500 social security check. Comparing 2023 to 2019- Rents jumped 34% in Reno, in the US it was 28%. An average home jumped 43% from $383,000 to $549,000. ...

Negotiations between European leaders, especially Germany's Merkel and the Obama administration on climate change at G8 meeting. The U.S. and Europe try to work out differences. The U.S. is vague about some language such as the starting year against which emissions reductions will be measured, and has resisted the European pressure to set strong goals over the next 10 years. Europe wants 1990, while the USA, Australia and Japan prefer 2005. Europe wants to see language in aformal document that is being developed for the G-8 meeting, which also includes developing countries, for limiting the rise in global temperatures to 2 degrees celsius, or 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit, above pre-industrial levels.
