Manufacturing output showed brisk growth in the first quarter of 2011, growing at four times the estimated rate for the overall U.S. economy. The PNC Financial Group estimates growth for the first quarter for the overall economy at 2%. This growth is supported by exports to developing countries in Asia and Latin America with the help of a weaker dollar. American companies are also increasing investment in computers, machinery and other equipment. This has increased growth and profits for companies such as Intel, Caterpillar, Eaton, and United Technologies. Manufacturing in the U.S. is rebounding from the sharp drop in 2008-2009. During the first quarter it increased at an annual rate of 9.1% according to the Federal Reserve. In the second half of 2011 manufacturing is expected to slow to about 4%, according to Manufacturer's Alliance/MAPI. So far manufacturing has shrugged off concerns about oil prices approaching $110 a barrel and the earthquake in Japan. This growth has pushed the Dow Jones Industrial Averages to 12453, the highest close since June 2008....

A new review of defense policy undertaken by the British government is outlined in paper, "Global Britain in a Competitive Age." The 100 page report points out that Britain faces a different world situation today and redefines the situation in which nuclear weapons would be used to include biological or chemical weapons attack. It sees the need for Britain to be able to respond to threats of chemical and biological weapons attacks coupled with cyber attacks from countries without nuclear weapons. The report also says other countries "are increasing and diversifying their nuclear arsenals." It identifies a "developing range of technological and doctrinal threats." In response Britain will increase its Trident nuclear warheads to 260 from 180. The report says China presents the "biggest state based threat" to Britain's economic security, and a "systematic challenge" to its prosperity and values. It says China's military modernization and increasing assertiveness in the Pacific region poses "an increasing risk to UK interests." Britain will make more secure its critical infrastructure, including hospitals, power plants and water systems, so that it can confidently trade with China. ...

Orange juice from Brazil, copper from Chile, electronics and pharma from India, and aircraft from EU, are part of broad exemptions in US tariffs plans. The exemptions are designed to give flexibility to US negotiators where it helps the US economy to import these items. 

This month negotiating teams from Japan, EU, South Korea and othere countries are trying to get exemptions for other items. BMW is seeking export rebates for exports of SUV's to EU from its US factories. And VW is seeking to use investments it says it will make in the US manufacturing as a way to get exemptions in tariffs or lower tariff rate similar to the way Apple has negotiated a tariff exemption for its Chinese exports to the US by saying it will invest $100 billion in the US manufacturing. US negotiators have to get the firm guarantees that these investments are going to be made.

Russian offers for settlement of Ukraine conflict in 2025 described as capitulation in the UK's Guardian- all of the eastern Donbass region and Crimea ceded to Russia, limits on its army and its long range weapons, leaving it too weak to defend itself. The UK, France oppose it. The new German government of CDU's Merz is increasing Germany's defense capabilities to shoulder the burden of defence in the EU in 2025-2026. After 2 years of the pandemic's devastating effects on health, governments around the world decided to protect ordinary people from the effects of higher prices for staples and food with the increase in inflation. This WSJ report takes a detailed look at different countries and how they after coping with the effects on total debt and debt servicing needs of moves such as subsidies and tax cuts. The situation is exacerbated by the Ukraine war which affects wheat exports from Ukraine and Russia, and the high oil prices as a result of the war. The effects shown by country are- China- consumers are protected from high oil prices by regulated retail gasoline prices. As oil prices keep going up state owned refineries will bear a disproportionate share of the burden of high prices. India- The government has set aside $40 billion in aid as subsidies for oil and fertilizer. This will support farmers and consumers for fiscal year to March 2023. It will make it harder to cut the budget deficit from 6.9% of GDP to 6.4%. Pakistan - A subsidy of $1.5 billion was given for diesel, gasoline and electricity by the Imran Khan government. This did not have IMF approval and talks are taking place on the IMF program between the government and IMF for it to continue. Rampant inflation has led to reduced popularity of the Imran Khan government. Argentina- A new program to refinance $44 billion in debt with IMF assistance is being affected by the subsidies for oil and electricity. About 800,000 tons of grain are being diverted to the domestic market from exports. Agricultural producers such as Argentina have better protection from higher food prices. In Argentina 40% of the people are living below poverty and the country has 50% inflation.  Malaysia and Indonesia- Both countries are exporters of commodities and higher prices could provide additional revenues to meet higher import prices, says the WSJ. Egypt- higher prices for wheat imported from Ukraine and Russia where Egypt gets 70% of its wheat needs have increased cost of subsidies by $1 billion. Kenya- Fuel subsidy costs will increase by $500 million over 2 years. Europe- In France 400 million euros relief package and in Spain 500 million euros relief package for energy price increases. In Germany cash payments to taxpayers, heavily discounted transportation tickets, and price caps on gasoline and diesel.   ...

Northwestern University has its federal funding  frozen. $790 million federal funds are frozen by the US government for toleration of anti-semitism on campus in 2024 and 2025. Northwestern cut a deal with protesters putting out anti-semitic slogans following an encampment, that was followed by other universities, says this WSJ report. This is not in the tradition of US universities and the Nation founded with the Christian faith that includes the Catholic, Protestant and Jewish faiths as one indivisible faith. Northwestern and others fail when new drug research leads to discoveries funded by federal dollars. Yet the universities get their portion of the return from the pharmaceutical companies, which then charge the average public exorbitant prices, making the universities complicit in the huge burdens placed on the American people. Similar to a Catholic Church  working with the nobles in feudal times- placing ever higher burdens on ordinary working people. Another issue is that universities are investing in new buildings, raising their prices, and operating as if they are unaccountable to the people, as young American men are being pushed away by high prices and foreign students are taking their places.   ...

Cuba needs 100,000 gallons of fuel a day. It produces 40,000 gallons a day on the island. The shortfall is leading to a humanitarian crisis with the dererioration faster than expected. Reports from Le Monde, El Pais, and other media show adire situation unfolding. To provide about 10,000 private companies with enough fuel to operate as they import $1 billion of food and goods each year the US government is allowing the flow of some oil to Cuba. This is about 100,000 gallons in small containers as a step to avoid a economic catastrophe. For Cuba, as in Venezuela, and Colombia, and also in Mexico, central America, thirty years of experimenting with ideological movements has led to unmitigated disaster with drug trafficking, drug cartels, migrant trafficking, economic mismanagement on a massive scale. The result is repercussions across the continent and disturbing the social, political and economic fabric of the United States.

China's agriculture based on small farms is undergoing a change as the government pushes automated farming and large farms in the face of limited imports from the U.S. China put tariffs on agricultural imports from the U.S. in retaliation for U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports. China's Agriculture Ministry says it will build 254 "strong agricultural industrial towns" as models for the country. President Xi stated on a visit to northeastern province Heilongjiang, that "unilateralism and trade protectionism are rising, forcing us to take the road of self reliance." The yield per hectare in the U.S. for soybeans is about twice that in China. Mechanized farming is limited in China because it would eliminate many jobs in rural areas. As the state has ownership of land and farmers merely use land, farmers are less likely to take risks with large long term investments. It can be risky for farmers to rent their land use rights to others, which would lead to consolidation.  Now a separate "Made in 2025" plan makes upgrading farm machinery and equipment one of the 10 goals. China may lift ban on genetically modified seeds now that ChemChina has acquired Swiss seed company Syngenta. China plans to partner with Asian Development Bank to provide $6 billion of loans, grants and investment to fund a list of development projects in rural areas, to modernize agriculture. WSJ cites a project of consolidation into an 8200 acre farm in Shandong province that  has increased yields 43% by investing in new farm equipment and planting machines, pesticide spraying drones. A brief history of the US presence in Greenland and US-Denmark relations in Le Monde. On a map Greenland is located closest to Canada on the Smith Sound with the American base of Thule nearby. Next closest is Iceland. Norway and Denmark are further away. Around 1814 when Britain invaded and occupied Denmark in the Napoleonic Wars, Norway which was part of Denmark since 1400 was given to Sweden by Treaty of Kiel. Greenland, Faroe and Iceland were Norwegian dependencies. All three were kept by Denmark.  Icelanders set up small settlements on shores of Greenland in the 10th century which did not survive. Other parts of the island's shore were visited by the Dutch who came into conflict with the Danes after 1500. No country could claim ownership of Greenland as because of the harsh climate there very few settlements survived except of the native Inuit people population of 14,000 by 1900 who lived there. In 2025 about 56,000 Inuit live on Greenland. Robert Peary explored the vast Greenland region for the US Navy on on many trips from 1894 to 1909. With his ship The Roosevelt he reached a point about 100 kilometres from the North Pole in 1909. This is part of the US history on Greenland. Denmark signed documents asking for US protection of Greenland after Denmark was occupied by Nazi Germany in 1941. The Danish ambassador in Washington signed an agreement with Cordell Hull US Secretary of State making Greenland a protectorate of the US. The US set up military bases in Greenland. Today the US base in Thule is 1220 miles north of the Arctic Circle. It has a giant radar capable of detecting ballistic missile attack and a control center of the US military satellite network. At one time 10,000 soldiers were stationed at Thule base, today about 150 soldiers are in Thule. ...

This BBC report looks back at the Solomon Islands which were part of the Guadalcanal campaign in World War II and the importance of the Pacific. In 1943 a Japanese destroyer sank an American ship under John Kennedy in these Pacific ocean waters. About  80 years later his daughter Caroline Kennedy, ambassador to Australia in the Biden administration, takes a trip to this Pacific region and islands of Samoa and Tonga, with Wendy Sherman. China is seen as planning a base in the Solomon Islands which is on the southern sea route near Australia.

President Macron of France says with the president of Sweden Ulf Kristersson at the Swedish Defense Academy- "The EU has to make bold decisions to defend Ukraine, to preempt any US decision to withhold of reduce its support." Europe should have its own security architecture independent of the US and Russia. it says Europe's effort was inadequate when Russia had completely revamped its war effort, that Europe should not shirk its responsibilities for its own defense. That no matter what happens with Ukraine aid in US Congress, or no matter what happens in the US presidential election in November, Europe will have done what it needs to do for its own defense. In doing this he said Europe needs to stand by Ukraine.
