The decision of Norway's parliament to divest holdings of its $890 billion national pension fund in companies with 30% of the revenues coming from coal, is important say experts because it renews the discussion on the use of coal and its damage to health and the environment. Some endowment funds such as that at Harvard, Middlebury and Pomona College, have stated they do not see the funds as a tool for social and political changes, other investors see the moves as symbolic. At the same time the Church of England, says it will cut coal or oil sands from its $14 billion portfolio, and insurer AXA plans to cut $560 million in coal related investments from its portfolio. Norway's decision is broader than climate change, as it looks at the financial aspects as well. Svein Flatten, a member of parliament from the Conservative Party, says lawmakers are not just acting for political purposes, suggesting it could end up being a move to improve returns in the long run by reducing financial risks. The 30% threshold would cover mining companies, and the power companies with a mix of coal in their energy generation that makes them dependent on coal for 30% of their revenues. The effect of this is to nudge the shift away from coal at power companies. Bevis Longstreth, a former commissioner of the SEC under Reagan, says Norway's move is designed to shift the mixture of power generation at power companies, and in this sense is likely to be effective when combined with moves by other companies in sequence to reduce the use of coal. This process is already underway, especially where it makes a huge difference such as in China, because of the damaging effects of large dependence on coal for energy on health in China....

Just like the situation in oil Chinese demand now puts pressure on coal prices. China was an exporter of coal, now since the first half of 2007 its an importer of coal even though it has large deposits of coal. Since then coal prices around the world have nearly doubled, and since the winter storms hit China in January 2008 Asian coal prices have gone up an additional 34%.

The torrential rain and floods in Australia have disrupted coal mining and are likely to lead to higher coal and steel prices. About 98 million tons of annual steel making coal capacity, equal to 73% of coal exported from Queensland is affected according to analysts at Macquarie Capital. This is 37% of the annual, global seaborne supply of coal for steelmakers. Prices for steelmaking coal have gone up by 10% on the spot market to about $250 a metric ton, according to analysts.

A three judge special bench of India's Supreme Court led by chief justice Rajendra Mal Lodha, said the process of allocation of coal licenses by the coal ministry lacked accountability and openness. Lodha said: "There was no fair and transparent procedure, all resulting in unfair distribution of the national wealth. Common good and public interest have, thus, suffered heavily." A report by India's federal auditor in 2012 stated the improper allocation of 200 coal leases to private companies cost the government about $30 billion. Former prime minister Manmohan Singh of the Congresss party headed the Coal ministry for part of the period when the improper coal leases were given, leading to intense criticism from the media. This was an issue in the elections leading to the defeat of the Congress party by the BJP party led by Mr. Modi.

At this point in May (May 22, 2026) a glimmer of hope appears for settling both the crisis in Hormuz and the Ukraine war. Pakistan, Turkey and China following DJT visit to China may be pushing Iran to lower the scale of the conflict. China's first priority was to be accepted by the US at the Beijing meeting as an equal power with the US, and keen to show its willingness to bear responsibility for peaceful resolution in conflict zones as a sign of its maturity as a world power. Much of this is not shown in the media as it is mostly done behind the scenes in communications that the media knows nothing about. Note that even in the depths of the Cold War during the Hungarian revolution of 1956 and Soviet action in Budapest, the US and the Soviets when their economies were not intertwined as the US and China are today, were still talking to each other to limit the conflicts to low level conflict. Hong Kong takeover, China's actions near Taiwan, China's presence in Latin America, Chinese cooperation with Iran, and Russia on Ukraine, China's economic competition in rare earths, are relatively smaller levels of friction considering 1950's Soviet's and the US. At the same time China and the Us are aware of a new bloc emerging in Oslo in May, where India is merging its economy with the Nordic economies of Sweden, Denmark and Norway, and of the European Union and Germany, creating a new bloc of 2 billion people that can only grow rapidly with India's potential to exceed growth rates of 20% in the 600 million Eastern region for a decade. EU would make the shift to strategic partnership with India displacing the vital role the European Union has played in China's growth and economy. This would create new pressures for Russian president Putin to decide it is time to listen to a friend India and de-escalate lower the level of conflict with an initial peace deal that would lead to more talks on a final settlement. Because Russia would have a harder time tackling both India and Germany at the same time. NYT shows on the same day May 22 a report on Russia and a report by the Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Sonegard that say the elites in Russia and Putin were by January 2026 having very serious discussion to change the administration, bring Igor Sechin as negotiaor to end the Ukraine conflict before serious, possibly irreversible damage, to the Russian economy. Sweden's Sonegard says that between 2020 and 2024 Russian economy declined by 8%, not grew by 13% as official figures show, inflation is much higher than 5% as official figures show, and credit is tightening, bankruptcies expected, growth even with oil prices up down to 0.4% for 2026. During 20 years running Russia Putin's No. 1 priority, his life's mission was to restore, then exceed by a large margin the living standards of the Russian people. Having at such great cost accomplished the goal of gaining recognition as a Northern Power in Europe, having gained much of Russian speaking eastern Ukraine, Putin could wisely with self respect wind down Ukraine conflict for good. Researchers at MIT, Peking University, Tsinghua University, and Hebrew University, have released a report on the dangerous effects of air pollution from the dependence on coal for energy in China. The report shows that areas in northern China north of the Huai River in central China -where coal use is much higher with government support than the area south of the river- have about 5 years lower life expectancy than areas south of the river.

China is well positioned to cope with the cutoff of supplies of oil from the Middle East after decades of focus on building up its stocks of oil. China has made self sufficiency in energy a key goal for the economy. China uses 16 million barrels a day of oil, of which 12 million is imported, and production inside China is a little over 4 million barrels a day. It normally adds 1 million barrels a day to its stockpile inventory. This inventory stockpile is 1.2 billion barrels and is good for 100 days. China is able to make up for oil supplies by importing more from Russia. The Power of Siberia 2 pipeline for natural gas is being pushed forward for natural gas supplies from Russia to China. China has large supplies of coal for electricity. It also is increasing its capacity to make renewable energy, solar panels and wind turbines.

Prakash and Ghosh in the Hindusthan Times remind readers that even though India has ambitious plans for renewable energy much remains to be done in shifting to clean coal technologies. An estimated 80% of India's coal plants use obsolete technologies, making this an obvious area for improvement. India plans to make solar the source of 100GW of 175GW it plans to generate in renewable energy by 2022. Yet it must not be forgotten that coal is a dominant source for the foreseeable future and shifting to clean coal technologies is an area that should get top priority from the government. Today India is the third largest in terms of carbon emissions after the U.S and China.
