To understand the upside down nature of and distortions in capital markets by 2024 look at this set of valuations. Can you tell which market capitalization or valuation is out of step in this list? Boeing $100 billion GM       $67 billion TikTok    $300 billion Intel        $105 billion Apple      $3400 billion Nvidia       $3650 billion   Answer:  TikTok, Nvidia Another way to look at it the combined valuation of Intel, GM and Boeing is $272 billion, less tha Tiktok at $300 billion.  What if these companies disappeared tomorrow- would everything come to a standstill? Almost standstill as there would be no more laptops, cars and planes, much of our modern life would come to a standstill. Remove TikTok would life come to a standstill? Better still the capital allocated to TikTok is put into education, and financial literacy, cultural literacy, would life come to a standstill or are we better off with a more educated citizenry? ...

According to Goldman Sachs David Kostin the S&P at 500 is quite possible, and its not abig stretch. At earnings per share estimate of $40 to $50 a share and a P/E ratio of 10 which are realistic in this climate, you get the S&P in the 500 range. the notion of the Dow at 5000 and the S&P 500 at 500 are not unrealistic especially if the stimulus is not adequate or not as effective.

The FDIC had $19 billion in its fund that insures consumer's deposits at the end of 2008. A bill in Congress by Christopher Dodd, the Senate Banking Committee chairman, gives the FDIC access to $500 billion till the end of 2010 if the Fed, the President and Treasury secretary support that, and $100 billion without that approval. The FDIC proposed raising the fees banks pay into the deposit insurance fund to buildup the fund, that has been depleted by bank bailouts like the one at IndyMac which cost $10 billion. But banks protested because it comes at a time when bank's are already in a bad condition. Under a 1991 law the FDIC can borrow from the Treasury amaximum of $30 billion. The access to $500 billion is meant to let the FDIC act as another source of funds to address systemic risks that arise in the future, in addition to the $700 billion already approved by Congress for that purpose. In an interview Sheila Bair, head of the FDIC, said that a change in the law would "ease the mechanics of how seamlessly we can access our lines of" funding. I'm the kind of person who likes to be prepared for all contingencies."...

The $500 million jury award to two persons getting hepatitic C as a result of "unsafe practices" at the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada. The jury decision for punitive damages was made against Health Plan of Nevada for $270 million, and Sierra Health Services for $230 millon in Clark County District Court in Las Vegas. Lessons can be learned about careful reopening in fighting the coronavirus from other countries. Here the Netherlands experienced a rise of cases by 500% within two weeks of reopening after some poor decisions. The Mark Rutte government decided to open all bars and nightclubs resulting in a twelve fold surge in these locations in one week. Most of the new coronavirus cases were in people 18-29. Data from Dutch public health institute shows 4 out of 10 new cases linked to bars and nightclubs with 262% surge in cases for young people 18-24 years. This goes to show that with the vaccination drive what we see is the cases shifting to younger people, the unvaccinated, and to activities like nightlife. People going to work, or doing hybrid remote work with trips to the office, workers in factories, people doing essential shopping, are not causing the rise in cases. Much can be learned from these examples in working out reopening that does not lead to new crises with surging cases in new waves of coronavirus. Earlier in 2020 summer tourists who ignored mask and social distancing restrictions in Croatia brought on a post summer coronavirus wave to Germany and Austria. This time Greece and Portugal are introducing restrictions. Greece plans to make vaccine health pass required effective July 21 to go into restaurants. Another lesson from Netherlands this week is that a 20,000 person music event of 2 days in Utrecht where QR codes were required showing vaccination or PCR tests failed. About 1000 cases were attributed to the Utrecht event alone. Reasons given are that people faked the QR codes, or that the covid testing system produced too many false results as much as 20%. The same QR code system was followed at nightclubs resulting in big problems. One can never be sure that things work as expected and the risks are great as this adds up. Even vaccines offer limited protection and only if fully vaccinated depending on the type of vaccine. One dose of the vaccine is simply inadequate, and obesity, other morbidities can lead to problems. Withdrawing the mandatory use of face masks in most situations is also a risky decision of the Dutch government. Face masks offer the added protection at a time of variants that spread quckly, and when large parts of the population have only one dose of the vaccine, some elderly are still not vaccinated, and young people have not been vaccinated in large numbers. ...

The market for oil field equipment is tight with 90% utilization, making it harder for larger oil producers to drill more oil wells for shale oil in the US. Large US shale oil producers reduced production when oil prices plunged and did not come back leaving smaller oil producers to increase production as prices went back up in 2021. Oil prices are now expected to reach $100 per barrel for the first time since 2014.  Saudis and Russia are not expected to increase production say experts. The possible Russian invasion of Ukraine and shortage of energy supplies is also a factor. Oil demand in the US and Europe has rebounded with milder covid-19 from Omicron variant and fewer lockdowns. Automobile use is also up in the US with November showing 12% increase in miles driven over the prior year, according to the Federal Highway Administration. Low inventories and resilient demand, and low spare capacity will keep prices surging to $100 from today's price of Brent crude oil at $89 in January 2022.   ...

$700 million loss on a clean beauty brand during the pandemic by Carlyle taking money from investors. During the pandemic Carlyle private equity invested $700 million of investor's money in Beauty Counter, a direct seller of a clean beauty brand started by Mrs Renfrew. The product and concept failed. This is $700 million that could have been invested in much needed nation's infrastructure projects, in climate change action, in renewable energy, in healthcare, in education, with reasonable returns. Capital market misallocation is a huge problem for the last 2 decades, with hundreds of billions of dollars lost or wasted in dubious products such as $100 million for a new golf ball with hundreds of such projects and products that are not vital needs for the American people. Tax benefits for such dubious projects and ideas lead to more revenue that is diverted away from the essential needs of the Nation and the American people. Over two decades this adds up to huge losses which would mean a lot of the Nation's infrastructure could have been replaced by now using this money. The capital allocation system needs to be rebuilt from the ground up to meet the vital needs of the Nation and the American people. ...

Internal Bank of England data showing Britain inside European Union 6-8% higher GDP and 75 billion pounds of higher exports of goods in 2025. This is the only objective assessment one can accept in judging what would be best for British workers and their families.  Also lost on the 2014 -2016 period that led to referendum on Brexit in 2016 just three years later is that it came after the 2009-2011 period for recovery from the financial crisis, the first entry of Conservatives and sharp austerity cuts in public spending by 2012, and the period of Covid that followed just 3 years after 2016 in 2019. The process of improving productivity and increasing competitiveness that could have happened, is a cost Britain suffered from Brexit becoming topic No.1, skewing priorities from reindustrializing to debate on a non priority item Brexit- with a lost decade as a result in addition to the 8% of GDP and 75 billion pounds that could add to these numbers. In this way UK lost about 10% of its GDP and 100 billion pounds of exports that without the that  additional public investment  did not happen from 2009 financial crisis, from Brexit divisiveness, followed by Covid. The result is 1.5% growth in GDP in UK compared to closer to 3% in the US. The lower growth alone can mean additional losses in exports in 2025 than are seen in numbers, and additional losses in GDP. This is the economic weakness  that hangs over Britain as it tries out a new leader in 2026. Only a bold action plan under a bold leader can reverse this decline. As shown elsewhere on these pages in Lyrarc, this is why a new leader needs to articulate a bold and well thought out plan to execute with the support of the British people. Andy Burnham has the potential to make this happen starting in 2026 over the next 5-7 years. He has to build on the work he did in the Greater Manchester region, and like Modi in India applying the lessons learned in his home state of Gujarat, step by step, year by year, build the industrial and economic capacity of Britain by 2035. It is not a feat for the timid, struggles will abound, yet it can be done with one step following the previous step in a continuous stride. In fact Burnham can now work with India to add about 1% of GDP because of the close trading relationship and centuries long synergies with India to get closer to 3% growth in GDP per year. At that point public spending and investment would rise to propel further growth. It is in the interest of every sector in Britain to pull together, the same in India, to lift these two main countries of the Commonwealth by the bootstraps. ...

People in China with 800 yuan or $114 can now invest in low cost mutual funds. They can invest in 5700 domestic mutual funds offered by Vanguard's partner in China Ant Financial Services Group. Vanguard offers investment advice in assembling mutual funds. The investment advice will depend on algorithms not people to provide investment advice.  Ant owns 51% Vanguard 49%. Chinese investors are known for speculative approach to investing and making risky investments. By contrast Vanguard's approach in the U.S. is more careful and makes a serious effort to reduce risk with its index based mutual funds which it pioneered. China is making an effort to bring American companies into its financial  markets as part of the opening up sought by the U.S. Vanguard CEO Tim Buckley says his goal is "to fundamentally change for the better how individuals in China invest." Vanguard says it has taken the long view having worked for a long time on getting regulatory approval and its own approach for investing to introduce in China. It studied the market since 2018 talking to industry peers, regulators and clients. It says Chinese regulators appreciate Vanguard taking the long view. Today Vanguard's office in China has only 20 employees, and it has stayed away from setting up private investment funds for wealthy individuals and institutions which is permitted for western firms in China such as Fidelity International.  Vanguard's Mr.Bogle pioneered low cost index mutual funds that follow and index as opposed to having mutual fund managers determine investments. This takes the guesswork and individual bias out of the equation as experience has proven that over the long run this approach works best. Vanguard now has $6 trillion in funds under management, and is by far the largest mutual funds company in the world. It now has the potential to tackle a huge market of 900 million individuals in China. ...

G7 Finance Ministers plan to release 300 million barrels of oil (2 weeks worth of Straits of Hormuz lost oil production ) to keep oil prices in check. Oil Prices reach $101 a barrel after 1 week of the US Israel war with Iran. Oil going through Straits of Hormuz are 20 million barrels a day, if 300 million barrels are released that would cover another 15 days of the war. By that time safety has to be reestablished, and additional production brought from Venezuela, from Russia for use by India, so that maybe 50% of the 20 million barrels can be produced from other locations in the world to make up for the loss. Fatih Birol, head of the International Energy Agency says-  "In addition to the challenges of transit through the Strait of Hormuz, a substantial amount of oil production has been curtailed. This is creating significant and growing risks for the market. "IEA member countries currently hold over 1.2 billion barrels of public emergency oil stocks, with a further 600 million barrels of industry stocks held under government obligation."       ...
