Robert Habeck of the Greens party is vice chancellor and heads a new ministry that combines the economy ministry with ministry for climate. This brings Germany and the European Union new leadership with plans to modernize German and European economies, and build a stronger relationship with the US.

Stephen Lind describes how the television special "Charlie Brown Christmas" was made in 1963. Over 50 years later it is just as popular. It started as a television show for Coca Cola, developed by cartoonist Charles Schulz of "Peanuts," Mr. Mendelson, and director Bill Melendez. Children are used for the character voices, it includes a choir from a local church, and Schulz insisted on Linus reciting a passage from the Gospel of St. Luke. In 2015 seven million viewers watched the first of the 2 broadcasts. In 1963 CBS and Coca Cola were skeptical about the show being popular and uneasy about the religious passage. Viewers were touched by the simple story and the struggles of a lonely kid trying to find the meaning of the season. Schulz is reported to have told the skeptical folks at CBS and his creative partners about reading aloud from St Luke, that if they didn't do it, who could be expected to do it.

Svenja Schulze brings new hope and dynamism to Germany's Development Ministry. As head of the Development Ministry she brings international experience in fighting climate change as SPD minister in the last government heading the climate change related Environment ministry. There she launched the climate protection package measures aimed at making Germany climate neutral by 2045. She now heads a ministry with a budget of $13.5 billion (12 billion euros). She wants to cooperate better with the Global South with an effort to tackle poverty and help developing nations. After the shocks of the pandemic this is an essential and important task. Her predecessor as Development minister Heidemarie Wiezcorek-Zeul, SPD minister 1998-2009 says the ministry needs clout in decisionmaking and for this it is important that the Development ministry is separate and an independent entity not lumped in with the Foreign Office as in Britain. That would be quite disastrous she says.  Climate change issues are also seen as development issues and about poverty reduction. This is a useful point that Mr. Modi was trying to make as he addressed the COP26 Summit- that climate change has to be done in the overall context of mitigation, that climate change control is part of poverty reduction and brings in new opportunities when done this way. Examples are zero budget farming, and solar energy as low cost energy for rural areas in India. Here Schulze talks to employees at the Ministry and tell them "We must all strive to make a good life possible for everyone in the world, That may sound overly emotional, but it is our aspiration."  Martina Schaub, chairwoman for VENRO whivh represents 140 private and church development organizations in Germany sees Schulze as a sign of optimism. Germany's president Steinmeier is emerging as a key figure in the current effort to form a majority government in Germany under chancellor Merkel, reports Griff Witte in the Washington Post. This is because the FDP under Lindner with 11% of the vote has pulled out of the coalition talks, and the only alternative is for the SPD to change its position and agree to join the talks. Under Schulz the SPD has for 2 months turned down any effort to join the coalition talks. Partly because the SPD has not done well in recent elections and lost some of its worker base support. Some in the SPD have blamed this on the previous coalitions with the CDU party of Merkel. Steinmeier is a leader from the SPD who was foreign minister in the previous coalition of the CDU-SPD, and has greater influence on the SPD.  Steinmeier has pushed all parties to make another effort. This includes the SPD and Schulz now says the SPD shoulders "a responsibility to the country." After some prodding by Steinmeier and a 8 hour party meeting the SPD now says it will not say no to the talks. One SPD leader, a former mayor of Munich, says the SPD should be careful about what it says because we don't want to sound like "an agitated heap of chickens." Cem Ozdemir, Baden-Wurttemberg State Premier, with roots in Turkey born in Stuttgart area (parents came to Germany in the 1960's). Cem Ozdemir is exceptional in his popularity in an affluent German state. The 2026 state election campaign was run with focus on Ozdemir, and he did well in his debate with the CDU leader in the state. He led his party to over 30% of the vote. A third of working class voters gave the AfD their vote and it made it to 19% of the vote. The CDU came in second with a half percentage point below the Greens at 29.5%. Ozdemir was pre school educator and has a degree in psychology before he joined the Greens party. Under Chancellor Schroeder he was domestic spokesperson, and under Chancellor Scholz in 2024 he was Agriculture Minister.

US Forest Service agency plans to relocate it to Utah from Washington DC. The idea is to relocate to the communities it serves by placing 15 state directors to regions NFS serves. Salt Lake City's family focused life, its international airport and its lower cost of living are seen as attractive for recruitment. Utah is also one of the mountain states where large forests are located in the western US. Tom Schultz, head of the Forest Service says -"This is about building a Forest Service that is nimble, efficient, effective and closer to the forests and communities it serves." A network of centers of US Forest Service will also be used to redistribute personnel to regions and states- including ones at Colorado, Georgia, New Mexico, Montana, Wisconsin and California.

A ZDF poll in Dec. 2016 shows 64% of the German people support chancellor Merkel's decision to run for fourth term. Of CDU supporters 89% support Merkel. If the election were held today CDU/CSU would win 36%, SPD 21%, Greens 11% and FDP 5%. Schulz is a lot more popular than Sigmar Gabriel in the SPD. About 51% of the German people support Martin Schulz, current head of the European parliament, Gabriel gets only 29%. With SPD supporters Schulz has 64%. OPLAN is the German defense plan draft by Lt. Gen. Andre Bodeman which was started after chancellor Schulz's Zeitenwende "epochal change" speech in 2022. After that speech Schulz created a plan for $100 billion euros for defense of Germany.The intent is to prepare to defend Europe in case of clash with Russia. It goes back to a different era the Cold War of the 1960's. To improve infrastructure Gemany now plans to spend 166 billion euros, of which 100 billion euros go to railways, to update essential infrastructure. The new Merz of CDU government with SPD's Pistorius as Defense Minister is a relatively strong coalition government which plans to spend 500 billion euros for defense and upgrade the Bundeswehr for military readiness.

The Greens party will not be represented in the Saarland parliament as its performance declined in last weeks election. The Greens Party polls less than 8 percent in Germany, and less than 6 percent in North Rhine Westphalia elections for May 2017. The improving prospects of Martin Schulz the SPD candidate for chancellor have hurt the Greens. Even as the climate change issue becomes prominent the Greens are seeing the focus shift to the SPD and the CDU in 2017. The issues after the election of Trump following Brexit vote have shifted attention to what happens to the European Union, and the need for strong leadership in Germany and for the European Union. This does not help the Greens Party or other smaller parties. The AfD also has suffered as Germans take a second look at the parties, and think long and hard about what kind of future they want to see and the best way forward.

Biden meets German chancellor Scholz during Scholz's 2 day visit to the US. He tells Scholz: "I want to thank you for your strong and steady leadership. I mean that sincerely. It's made a huge difference." Ahead of this meeting Scholz called on China to "use your influence in Moscow to press for the withdrawal of Russian troops," and "not to supply weapons to the aggressor Russia," in a speech to the Bundestag German parliament Thursday.

U.S. electronic retailer Best Buy company founder Richard Schulze, its CEO for 36 years till 2002, and its current chairman, resigned on May 6, 2012. He will look at options for his 20.1% stake in the company. Hatim Tyabji, takes over as chairman, he previously headed the Audit committee, and was a director since 1998. An internal probe recently found that Schulze failed to notify the board about an improper relationship CEO Dunn had with an employee. CEO Dunn resigned earlier.

Annalena Baerbock German Foreign Minister continues to voice concerns about German policy towards China after the sale of a stake in Hamburg port to Chinese shipping company Cosco. Chancellor Scholz went ahead with a smaller stake after opposition from 6 ministries within his administration including the Free Democrats and the Greens. He will be visiting China soon after the recent party Congress. Scholz's spokesperson says Scholz does not favor decoupling with China, yet favors diversifying and minimizing the risks.

Germans including chancellor Scholz are hesitant to take up confrontational role with Russia for the long term says this report by David Sanger and Steve Erlanger of the NYT. Even as the Ukraine crisis reaches a stalemate chancellor Scholz is careful not to put Germany into a difficult position beyond his earlier commitment to spend 2% of GDP on defense with $100 billion invested in defense that has been fulfilled. Scholz meets president Biden this week.
