Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares is an engineer from Portugal who joined Renault as a test track driver in 1981. In 2014 Fiat merged with Chrysler and in 2021 the PSA Group merged with Fiat creating the Stellantis car company with sales in Europe and the US. As CEO of PSA Group Carlos Tavares headed Stellantis. Tavares has skills in persuading unions in Europe to work with him, and motivates his people with his working style. At Chrysler even with losses from 10% absenteeism he has managed to reach operating profit margin of 16.4%. Stellantis plans investments of $35 billion in EV vehicles by 2025 which means it is putting back profits into investing in the future. Stellantis is today larger than GM or Ford. It has 47,000 employees in the US.  Earlier PSA had acquired lossmaker Opel from GM in 2017. Salvador Illa of the Socialist party, ally of prime minister Pedro Sanchez of Spain, wins 28% of the vote. with 42 seats his party is the largest in Catalan assembly. He will need 68 votes to form a majority government. It opens a new chapter in Catalonia after efforts to form an independent Catalonia by some parties. Socialist party PSC campaigned for amnesty for parties connected to Mr. Puigdemont and for investment in public services to improve the lives of all Catalans within Spain with respect for diversity of opinion.

The Swiss National Bank gives up on its effort to maintain Swiss competitiveness by dropping the 2011 peg of 1.2 euros to the franc. That effort was becoming costlier as the central bank piled up hundreds of millions of euros on its balance sheet buying up euros to keep the value of the franc down. Investors have put money into francs as a safe haven since the 2008 financial crisis. By offering negative yields of 0.75% the central bank hoped to limit the damage with a surging franc. The franc went up by 15% on January 15, 2015, with the surprise announcement, and stocks of exporters declined sharply. The immediate decision was taken as the ECB planned to weaken the euro with a large quantitative easing program in its Dec. 22, 2015 meeting. The central bank said - "Recently the divergences between the monetary policies of the major currency areas have increased significantly- a trend that is likely to become even more pronounced." A December Swiss initiative was intended to force the Swiss National Bank to convert much of its foreign exchange holdings into gold, as public criticism of the large euro holdings increased with each currency market intervention. The SNB justified its peg to the euro and currency interventions saying that this gave the country's exporters time to make the transition to a stronger Swiss franc....

How the peg to the dollar creates two major problems for the Gulf countries, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia. First it means higher inflation in these countries, with double digit inflation in Qatar and the Emirates, and 5% in Saudi Arabia. Second it means policy inflexibility, monetary policy should be tightened when the Fed is easing. Monentary expansion is as much as 15 to 40% in the Gulf countries. There are 2 option one is a revaluation at a much higher exchange rate but this does not solve the problem of monetary inflexibility. The other is to peg to a basket of currencies including euro and dollar just as Kuwait has done. A shift to a peg to a basket of currencies would lead to diversification with these countries holding fewer dollars and would hurt the dollar. Saudi Arabia is reluctant to go with a different peg considering the dollars precarious situation but other Gulf countries may follow Kuwait.

With the Swiss economy experiencing falling wages and prices, fears of a deflationary spiral have led the Swiss central bank to take strong action to preserve export competitiveness. The Swiss National Bank is doing this by buying euros and keeping the Swiss Franc from appreciating above 1.20 euros to the franc, a peg set in Sept 2011. Since 2010 the central bank has printed Swiss Francs to buy euros and other currencies resulting in a quadrupling of the foreign assets it holds to about the size of its GDP- about 500 billion Swiss francs or $541 billion. Action of this size is unprecedented and comes as the eurozone economies contract in 2013. It has worked for 16 months and Switzerland has managed to increase exports to the eurozone and keep the Swiss franc below 1.20 euros. Japan's new prime minister Shinzo Abe is pushing a similiar policy to bring the yen down to 90 yen to the dollar to improve export competitiveness.

Mauricio Pochettino played for PSG at one time. The Argentine soccer player is now coach for France's PSG as it takes on Manchester City in the semi finals of the Champions League. Pochettino talks about his years as a player and then a coach in this interview in The Times. He says nervousness as a coach never bothered him as he was always so absorbed by the game and the players, and it could be a bit genetic too.

He was not active as a coach for a year after his departure from Tottenham Hotspur. Today he is seen as an effortless manager, with a natural disposition for the sport and a developer of talent.

There is an emotional attachment because he was close to PSG. "We took the decision because of our heart, not because whether it was the right moment to arrive in Paris or not," he says. "Now after 3 months we leave a very, very tough period."
