U.S. bank Wells Fargo is paying $175 million in a settlement with the Justice Department for "systemic discrimination" in mortgage lending to Blacks and Hispanics. The lawsuit was originally filed by the city of Baltimore over violations of fair lending laws. The Justice Department started its own investigation following the lawsuit. The Justice Department said 4500 black and Hispanic homeowners in the Baltimore and Washington region were targets of loans at unfavorable rates and excessie fees. Federal officials described this as a pattern of unfair lending practices that spanned 36 states and 34,000 minority customers over 5 years. As part of the settlement Wells Fargo is providing $50 million to Washington, Baltimore and six other metropolitan regions to help residents make down payments on new homes. Separately Wells Fargo in its settlement with the city of Baltimore, will provide $3 million in homeowner assistance to residents, and make $125 million in lower cost loans to low and moderate income people for the next 5 years....

Swing in districts where Spanish is spoken at home for Democrats was large in 2025 governors races in Virginia and New Jersey, the swing was smaller in districts where English was spoken in districts where Hispanics make up a larger part of the voter base. Interracial marraiges are increasing since the Supreme Court made antimiscegenation laws unconstituional in 1967. According to a new report by the Pew Research Center- based on historical data and Census Bureau information of the annual American Community Survey- 15% of all new marraiges in 2010 were between people of different race, ethnicity or color. This is double what it was in 1980. Of the total people married in 2010, 9% of whites, 17% of blacks, 26% of Hispanics and 28% of Asians were married outside of the ethnic and racial group. Interracial marraiges were more common in western states and in the northeastern U.S. compared to the southern and midwestern states. In the western states 22% of all marraiges were between people of different ethnic or racial groups or color. College educated people under 30 were the most open to interracial marraige.

The Romney campaign is trying to keep Obama's support among Hispanics and Latinos to 65-70%. Latino leaders say Romney's positions on immigration during the primaries, when he chose to go to the right of Governor Perry, have affected their perceptions and his more recent centrist positions are being discounted. Republicans are awakening to their weak position in the fastest growing demographic in the U.S. Positions on abortion, gay marraige and religion are affecting a portion of the Latino vote. One question is how enthusiastic is the voter turnout, especially because president Obama failed to take up immigration reform in his first term and gave it a lower priority.

A change is taking place with more Hispanic and white women, and white men gaining jobs in the private and government sectors. For black women 319,000 lost jobs in both the private and public sectors in Feb-July 2025, much of these losses in the federal government.  While 176,000 Hispanic women gained jobs in private and public sectors, for white women 142,000 gained jobs, and white men at 365,000 making the largest gain, labor statistics show.

For the first time the Census Bureau reported the number of non-Hispanic white American deaths exceeded the number of births for that group by 12,400. White births declined by 13% in 2012 from 2007 levels, partly because of the difficult economic situation following the 2008 global financial crisis. Experts say this could reverse with higher fertility rates for whites in future years with an economic recovery.

The overall prison rate according to a Pew study is 1 person for 41 for black people 1 for 96 for Hispanics and 1 for 245 for whites. So Black and Hispanic people are the most overrepresented in the nations prison system. Arizona spends $900 million on corrections. Black people between the ages of 17 and 35 are extinct in South Mountain say some older residents of this area who take care of the grandchildren left behind. The emphasis on law enforcement has created safer quieter neighborhoods but it has also created a problem of missing young people.

Most young Latinos identify with their country of origin, Mexican, Dominican, Cuban or some other country, rather than as Americans. This comes from aPew Hispanic Center report on "How Young Latinos Come of Age in America." High rates of pregnancy with about one in four Hispanic girls getting pregnant by the age of 19 still holds back Latinos. 52% favored country of origin as preference over 24% favoring American. Latinos represent an ethnic group with one in four newborns, and one in five schoolchildren.

James Q. Wilson points to the link between educational levels and inequality. He says the poor face too few skills and too few opportunities. The link with education is critical. He cites information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics which show that between 1979 and 2010, hourly wages for those with a college degree went up 33% for men and 20% for women. For those without a high school diploma wages declined 31% for men and 9% for women. It appears that men have been more adversely affected than women. Minorities have done poorly especially Hispanics and Blacks. Social factors such as unwed mothers aggravate conditions for the bottom fifth in incomes. As the demographics of America shift to higher population of Hispanic immigrants, the situation worsens. High schools in Hispanic areas of New York city with high dropout rates, to take one example, can affect income inequality as more immigrants take jobs at the minimum wage level. The 2008 financial crisis has also taken a higher toll on minorities and people with modest incomes by reducing their savings and through the large number of home foreclosures....

Clorox is concentrating on brands known for being environmentally friendly such as its Green Works line of cleaners, Brita water filters, and products of acquired companies such as Burt's Bees. Knauss describes the Hispanic consumers preference for Clorox and Pine Sol for cleaning and the use of bleach 70% for cleaning. Hispanics use 25% more bleach than other consumers and prefer fragrances such as lavender for Pine Sol. These are some of the insights the company is using to maintain its penetration in this market.

President Obama tells Hispanic high school students he supports a bipartisan plan for immigration reform from Senators Graham, McCain, Rubio, and Schumer. A critical part of the plan and the President's plan is a pathway to citizenship for 11 million illegal immigrants. Obama wants to see a pathway "from the outset," senators say this should happen after stricter enforcement requirements are met. If the senators do not move ahead with this plan the White House will put forward his own plan.

With population shifts to the south Texas has grown in population in 5 years to 2025 by roughly 2 million from 29 million to 31 million. In 2025 about 40% are Hispanic and 40% White evenly divided, with 11% black and 6% Asian, and 3% other. It remains a conservative state in the South with a focus on faith and on traditional values. Along with Florida and the two Carolinas it remains a major part of the Conservative South.
