Global aid to agriculture in developing countries is about $5 billion a year. Mr Obama made the decision to double U.S> aid to developing countries farmers to more than $1 billion ayear in 2010. THe NYT reports that with the G8 meeting in Italy in July, America will spend $3.5 billion dollars over 3 years for helping farmers in developing countries. This according to Michael Fromans, an Obama adminsitration official is going to be new money. As far as the other G8 countries are concerned it could include old money for the total $15 billion committed. Since the worst hit areas for agriculture are in Africa, and Africa has lost a lot of ground in development in the last 20 years, suffering neglect in aid to farmers over 20 years both form the American administrations and their own governments, it is surprising that the amount and the details for where it would go in Africa are not revealed. Mr Obama has grasped the need not just for shipping food assistance from the USA, but need to help farmers. He agrees with ANdrew Natsios former head of Agency of International Development, who says that most of the poorest people in developing countries are farmers and herders living in the countryside, the crux of any effort to improve their lives has to start with agriculture. Obama advocates using the "tried and true agricultural methodfs and technologies that are cheap and are efficient but can have huge impact" in the lives of people. Malawi, is a good example, say Prof. Sachs of Columbia University, as subsidies for fertilizer sharply increased food production. Sachs says it is possible to double or triple food production by giving small-holder farmers access to high yielding seeds, fertilizer and agricultural extension services. But more needs to be done and devloping countries themselves that have made progress like India, China and Brazil can provide their know-how and experts and should have been brought into this, which is another reason why there is no reason for a G-8 summit of countries of European origin. An enlarged organization can bring in the resources and ideas of all the major countries in the world, to especially bear in on Africa, where alot needs to be done. Just to get an idea the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization says the global economic crisis will put another 100 million people into facing hunger this year....

For passengers air travel nowadays is travelling on planes that are often totally booked. This is because airlines are cutting flights. And with fewer passengers after the economic crisis hit, airlines are having a difficult time cutting flights enough to meet the continuing drop in the number of passengers. Before the crisis business and international travel was a good source of revenue, now this is fading as there is more competition on transatlantic routes with about 50 airlines offering flights between US cities and European cities. The liberalization of air travel between the two continents with the 2007 "open skies" agreement is keeping downward pressure on prices. The International Air Transport Association says the number of passengers travelling on business and first class tickets between N. America and Europe was down 18.4% in April 2009, compared with same month in 2008. Traffic between N. America and Asia was down 26%, for the same period. This is hitting Lufthansa ansd KLM-Air France hard, but is helping Easyjet, Ryanair, and Air Berlin. As demand drops airlines will continue to cut capacity, and this will be done by cutting the number of flights on a route and using smaller planes. After all this capacity cutting takes place by September, OAG Aviation estimates that the seats on domestic flights will drop to 66.5 million from a peak of 84 million in 2001, a drop of 21%. Some airlines which rely less on corporate travellers will not see as steep a drop. These airlines are Southwest, JetBlue and AirTran. Airlines that may not survive the effects of the economic crisis, with tight credit and drop in air travel, and volatile oil prices, are United Airlines and US Airways. United relied heavily on corporate and trans-Pacific fliers before the economic crisis. Fitrch Ratings cites this in reducing the credit rating for United to junk status, as well as the heavy debt maturities in 2009 and 2010. In June 2009 United raised $175 million by issuing new debt, but at an interest rate of 17%. At US Airways the combined airline with America West after a$1.5 billion merger is struggling. It has the thinnest cash position of any airline according to a Morningstar research analyst, and may need further borrowing to meet debt payments. With all assets already mortgaged US Airways may have little borrowing capability left....

Toyota is expanding an original recall announced in late 2009 for 4.3 million cars by adding an additional 1.1 million cars. That recall involved pedals catching on floor mats. The original recall followed afatal car accident for a Lexus E350 sedan on a San Diego highway when it accelerated out of control killing all 4 occupants. For Akio Toyoda this comes as something he suspected could happen when he assumed the CEO position last June. He said then that Toyota had made amistake in the last decade with its push to become the world's largest carmaker under previous CEO's Okuda and Watanabe. See the links to this where his father Shoichiro Toyoda had serious concerns about how the company was run and a sense of foreboding about problems still to come. Shoichiro's sense was that the company was becoming too complacent and expanding too quickly. This was also the reason he worked behind the scenes to get Akio into the CEO position as someone who could take Toyota back to its original spirit. This may make swallowing the problems -and the apology which has taken so long for Akio- more difficult, as he had a sense all along that things weren't running the way they should. Under Okuda and Watanabe the quality problems were already becoming evident. Okuda became CEO in 1995 and chairman in 1999. Between 2000 and 2007 Toyota sales expanded from 1.6 millon to 2.6 million in the USA and it expanded with new manufacturing facilities in the USA- a full size pickup plant in San Antonio in 2005, a RAV4 sport utility plant in Ontario in 2008 and another plant in Mississippi. With the rapid expansion came quality problems and in 2005 Toyota recalled 2.38 millon vehicles, more than it sold that year. Watanabe who was president in 2006 delayed introductions of models for 6 months to give engineers more time to work on improvments in design. A two month internal review showed at the time that the product development process was'nt working the way it should- it showed that engineers were not conducting the rigorous quality checks that were an established practice at Toyota and sending out products relying on computer simulations. Toyota engineers from that period say the current problems may have some connection to problems that may have not been completely addressed from that period....

Hitachi's conversion to a leaner, more profit conscious company, learning from rivals, GE, Siemens, IBM and large Korean companies. CEO, Nakanishi, graduated from Stanford with a computer science degree in 1979, during a break from Hitachi. He takes a hands on approach to management and brings this approach to tough assignments to learn what is going wrong. He moved to San Jose, to figure out why the hard disk drive business Hitachi bought from IBM for $2.05 billion was losing money. There he found quality problems were causing 60% of the hard drives coming off the production line with defects. After fixing the problems and achieving 10% profit margins Nakanishi put the company up for sale. Western Digital bought the company for $4.8 billion. His hands on approach includes meeting directly with public officials and ministers in governments around the world that buy its nuclear plants, high speed trains and large machinery. To maintain its preferred bidder status Nakanishi met with Britain's transport minister during the switch in government to the Conservative party in 2010. In his approach he is part of a new breed of Japanese executives, some with education in the U.S., such as Toyota's new CEO, Akio Toyoda, and others such as Toshiba's CEO, Norio Sasaki, who are eager to break away from the mold. Like Toshiba, Hitachi has shifted away from its consumer product lines. Hitachi consumer products are expected to make up only 10% of sales in the coming fiscal year. Emphasis is on the industrial products from nuclear plants to power plant equipment and high speed trains that powered Hitachi from its early beginnings as a maker of mining equipment in the 1920's. These executives are vigilant about a "Not Invented Here Syndrome" typical of large Japanese companies. Nakanishi says there is a lot Japanese companies can learn from rivals about cost and strategies. The experience came with hard knocks. In March 2009, Hitachi announced the biggest loss for a Japanese company upto that time of $9.9 billion. As head of the power and industrial business Nakanishi lost a contract to build a power plant in the Unted Arab Emirates to Korean companies. Compared to Hitachi, Toshiba's strategy is to emphasize industrial products such as nuclear reactors but also keep a presence in consumer products because Sasaki's view is that consumer products require smaller investments and generate cash flow. Germany's social-affairs minister, Ursula von der Leyden, presents the "fourth poverty and wealth report," in March 2013. The issue of inequality is arousing public sentiment in Germany with this becoming an election issue along with the euro crisis and energy reform. The term Gerechtigkeit means "justice" in German and is associated with the idea of equality. The Social Democrats Party and the Greens talk about this in terms of "social scissors" opening wider. The Minder Initiative which passed in Switzerland enabling shareholders to restrict executive pay has led to public discussion in Germany for a similiar approach to be adopted by Germany. The ruling Christian Democratic Party (CDU) of Angela Merkel and the Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU) party are different from other parties in Europe because of their Catholic and Lutheran roots which favor social solidarity. The FDP party in the ruling coalition supports free market principles but lacks popular support. The Economist cites the work of the German think tank DIW on inequality, which shows inequality showing sharp rise after German reunification around 1991, especially in East Germany. The situation moderates with improvements in inequality in East Germany and a slight improvement in West Germany after 2005. Both East and W. Germany have moved up overall in the Ginni coefficeint which measures inequality from about 0.4 in 1991 to about 0.5 in 2010, showing that the situation has stabilized at a higher level of inequality. Part of this could be because of the shift to temporary workers at lower wages about this time as German industry made efforts to keep wages down and improve competitiveness, even as overall conditions in the economy improved in the last decade. The Economist cites another study by the Initiative for a New Social Market Economy, a German think tank, which compares Germany with other members of the OECD. Germany ranks closer to Scandinavian countries in seventh place in this study, but does poorly in equal oportunities with 14th place. Germany lags behind other OECD and European countries in opportunities for women to work full time. Germany lacks enough daycare facilities for small children so that their mothers can work full time. There is a shortage of about 150,000 for preschool daycare openings in Germany, acccording to information cited by Deutsche Welle from government sources....

A couple of things can be noted about the burgeoning Chinese market for cars. Most car buyers are first time buyers. But that is to be expected as China started with a small bases of cars to begin with. What is interesting about these first time car buyers is that they ask a lot of questions do their research and are looking for the best car for the money in terms of features, safety, reliability. So its also a sophisticated first time buyer that carmakers are dealing with. This car buyer is also looking at waiting to save enough to buy a better car as far up the ladder as the car buyer can go in terms of features and value in safety, reliability, design, even if this means waiting longer and saving for longer periods.In this sense the Asian car buyer may be different and less bent on instant gratification to get into a 4 wheeled vehicle. What this is doing is putting the domestic manufacturers under a lot of pressure to match the overseas manufacturers. Geely and Cherry the larger domestic makers have to come up with just as good or better a product to get new customers. At this time the overseas makers of cars like the Buick Excelle, the Toyota Camry and the Volkswagen Jetta have the advantage as they are established brnads. Its interesting to compare this with the experience of japan the other large Asian carmarket. In Japan Toyota, Nissan and Honda were the only carmakes available because of trade barriers in the Japanese market in postwar Japan. China is a relatively open market and China's approach seems to be to get the Chinese carmakers to do better in an intensely competitive market as opposed to giving them favorable treatment. Another aspect of this first time car buying in a country where car sales have increased eight fold since 2000 and now exceed sales in the Japanese market, is that this market is abit precarious as the example of the Li family shows. Li Rifu purchased a Geely for $9000 but later after he contracted cancer and had $40,000 in medical bills had to sell the car. China has no social safety net so that if there is a medical or other emergency or crisis in the family there is nothing to fall back on and the family ends up selling the car to pay for expenses....

How ArvinMeritor navigated the treacherous waters of the automotive parts buzsiness since 2000 when the company was formed taking in the automotive business of Rockwell International in Troy, Michigan. The combination was designed to bring the automotive parts business for roof and door systems, chassis and wheel products with the comercial truck business which makes drivetrain systems and components like axles, drivelines and braking systems. The business is in turmoil and ArvinMeritor last recorded a profit in 2005. Here is how they did it. First, the combination provided some linited diversification for the cyclicality of the automotive business passenger cars and trucking together. By 2004 the foreign makers especially the Japanese were taking market share from the Detroit Big Three car makers which only accelerated after that when the Big Three overconcentrated on SUV's and had no competitive car lineup to match the Japanese in 2007 and 2008. The Big three closed plants and companies like ArvinMeritor closed plants also. In the last couple of years first GM and then Ford began to emphasize emerging market countries like China, Russia, Brazil and India. Wagoner GM's CEO in citing improved results in 2008 specifically referred to the $500 million profit in Brazil as making this possible. He also said that when investors see the improved results so early they are forgetting that the model that GM has setup has changed completely from the model that investors were used to in previous years which was a large and growing US focussed market base. Now its a global focussed market base with particular focus on emerging markets. ArvinMeritor has followed this pattern and set up parts plants in new countries like Russia to supply the Big Three's plants there. But it appears from Phil Martens, Arvin Innovation's CEO's statement that only 20% of global automotive sales for ArvinInnovation, the automobile part of the busines that is being setup as a separate company, are coming from the Big Three of Detroit. And 65% of the sales are coming from outside North America. Which suggests that 15% of sales are coming from the foreign carmakers in North America. ArvinMeritor closed 11 plants in North America and the new company Arvin Innovation has 42 facilities in 16 countries with sales of $2.2 billion in fiscal 2007. ...

Amazing! Just fresh from the foreclosure crisis and as the worst of the foreclosures are taking place between now and 2009 for subprime and other loans homebuilders and home sellers are financing the 3% downpayment required by FHA for loans from the is government agency. What do they hope to accomplish sell homes and have the government foot the bill when these homes also go into foreclosure in a downturn? Already above average default rates for seller assisted down payment programs will make this government agency the Federal Housing Administration ask for a government subsidy for the firtst time in its 74 year history. The FHA will need $1.4 billion next year. FHA estimates that down payments provided by nonprofit groups account for 34% of all 200,000 loans backed by the FHA so far this year, up from 18% in all of 2003, and less than 2% in 2000. And FHA says that borrowers are 2 to 3 times as likely to default on their payments when they receive a down payment from a nonprofit. The reckless manner in which homebuilders are selling these homes is unbelievable, more so in today's difficult economy. See the ads for these homes in this WSJ article and its is shocking. D.R. Horton is advertising 100% financing for 2 and 3 bedroom homes near the beach in Maui, costint $498,000, and a Seattle area builder Quadrant corporation is advertising townhomes for $500 downpayment. Use your coffee budget says a online promotion in the St Louis area! And though the risks are known to housing officials in the government they face a battle from well funded and coaltition of homebuilders, lowincome housing and minority groups. though its hard to understand how a home that ends in foreclosure for a low income group or minortiy group can benefit a minority group. Yet the Black and Hispanic caucus, people in Congress like Maxine Waters and Barney Frank still think it does as they continue to support the lobbying that keeps these kinds of loans going. Two examples given here of a Dick Whitmore and a Gloria Harris one saying it was impossible for him to come up with the $5000 downpayment and the other saying she was living from week to week suggest that they are likely to end up having difficulty making payments. ...

JP Morgan Chase will modify the terms of $70 billion in mortgages for borrowers who are behind in their payments or expected to be. This covers 400,000 borrowers. The focus is especially on a type of loan structured so that the monthly payment increases, and Chase inherited $54 billion of such loans with the takeover of Washington Mutual in September 2008. Some of these loans are called options adjustable rate mortgages where borrowers can make payments that don't even cover the interest costs, resulting in increasing the loan balance. Chase will replace the options ARM's with fixed rate loans.In taking over WaMU, Chase had a large exposure to the California housing market. WIth WaMu CHase ended up with $16 billion of subprime mortgages. The mortgages that Chase will modify for this plan with affordable payments make up 4.7% of the home loans it owns or are serviced by Chase's EMC Mortgage Corporation. So this is a good start but a lot remains to be done. Chase's Scharf who heads the retail division said that Chase had heard loud and clear what the thought leaders in the country are saying, and wanted to provide leadership on this issue to the whole industry as it does'nt make sense to wait. About 7.3 million American homeowners are expected to default on their mortgages from 2008 to 2010, and about 4.3 million homeowners lose their homes, according to Moody's Economy.com. While opinion leaders like FDIC's Sheila Bair and Reagan adviser Martin Feldstein have called for government help to prevent foreclosures from the early months of 2008,and FDIC has considered about 40% of current monthly payments the affordable amount for loan modification in IndyMac FDIC modifications, neither the Bush administration, banks or companies in the mortgage industry have taken any leadership on this issue. And now Scharf says it makes no sense to wait, in effect a signal to other banks to do the same. Scharf also said the stronger you are the more easier it makes to take these decisions suggesting that the $25 billion in government funds it received helped it reach this decision on this plan, which makes a lot of sense for the banks because foreclosures are the worst way to recover money with bad consequences for all parties and disastrous for the US and global economy....

Micheline Maynard gets diverse views on bankruptcy filing and bailout for General Motors and Ford. Out of hundreds of comments, (looking at the comments based on reader recommends from 70 to 15 readers recommend range), with over 90% of comments favoring no bailout money for automakers without coming to grips with problems and replacing management and the board, it is clear that readers cite in order of importance the following against the automakers. Complicity with Congress and lobbyists in keeping fuel efficiency low. This sent billions of dollars to mideast nations for oil, which in turn bloated liquidity here at home, helping fuel the cheap credit era in the US and building consumer and mortgage debt. This lack of conservation in gasoline use burdened economies around the world with high oil prices, and then hit the car companies in Detroit hard as sales of large vehicles collapsed. Its entirely the Detroit carmakers own shortsightedness they say. Second most mentioned is bad management, and bad decisions and arrogance. Third the unions bloated contracts, and bankruptcy as the only way to get rid of them. Fourth failure to make green cars. Fifth the lack of any idea what $25 or $50 billion given to GM and Chrysler would get the taxpayer, because if the market has collapsed then more money will be needed each year to pay salaries and contiinue operations in 2009, followed by 2010. The market has gone from 16 milllion to a 10 million rate in October 2008, if it drops to 8 million in 2009, it would require the companies to shrink by 50% as a rough guess, and the union contracts just negotiated would be totally inappropriate for the new market and financial conditions. Getting rid of those union contracts could only be done in a bankruptcy filing, as in bankruptcy everything would have to be done from scratch. Whereas in a bailout the unions would simply refuse to cooperate as they have done in the past. This is also what readers are saying when they say let the market economy work. A look at the reader comments on similar articles in the Washington Post and the WSJ also show an overwhelming number of readers not favoring taxpayer money for automakers without serious changes, and bringing a completely new management and board to get things off to a fresh start, with no legacy from the past. ...

Toyota has passed GM in sales worldwidefor the first quarter 2007. But this is happening against a changing backdrop which is that worldwide sales and markets are shifting to China and India, and GM has the initative in both countries. Its Chinese sales increased by 32% to 876,000 units in 2006 and it plans to inroduce 10 new models or upgrades in the Chinese market in 2007. The other change is that after years of growth Toyota sees a relatively stagnant US market and its strategy is shifting to extracting more profit from each car, by increasing the flexibility of US plants to make more and diverse models, and building plants in low wage areas like the one in Mississippi. Note that the plant in Mississippi is expected to come onstream a year later in 2010 and produce 150,000 not 200,000 Highlander SUV's. Also related to this is the disappointment in Tundra pickup sales which may miss the modest target of 200,000 for 2007. On the manufacturing front Toyota is slowing down product development to ensure that all needed quality checks are performed by engineers. Mr Watanabe, Toyota's CEO, and a manufacturing man himself, has referred to quality checks being skipped or neglected in the rush for sales growth. GM is pursuing cost, efficiency and quality goals of its own and $9 billion in cost savings are planned for this year compared to 2006, another $9 billion is expected to be achieved in 2008. Another factor that is relevant to Toyota's experience in the US market is its fear of being labeled as a foreign company taking away American jobs. Hence the build up of US manufacturing capacity to 1.8 million now to increase to 2.2 million by 2010. And advertising for Toyota continues to foster an image of cars made in America, by American workers for the American buyers. In this new environment leadership in a worldwide market may actually shift back and forth between competitors and new challenges will come up as the Asian market explodes, and profitability and quality will become just as important or more important than sales....

Mohammed bin Salman, 31 years old, is made the successor to his father King Salman. Prince Nayef, 57, the crown prince is removed from this position. Nayef was Interior Minister. After the current king assumed office in Jan. 2015, he promoted his son to the position of defence minister, overseeing the state oil company and overseeing economic affairs. He put together a plan Saudi Vision 2030, and the kingdom has taken a larger role in international affairs under his leadership as the U.S. under the Obama administration moved away from the Saudi policies in Bahrain, Egypt, and Yemen. Under Salman the Saudi kingdom has moved to confront Iran in Syria and Yemen supporting opposite sides in the conflict, and with Saudi aircraft bombing targets in Yemen.  Recap- for more depth see groups and links and search. In international affairs the Saudis grew restive as the Obama administration failed to setup a no fly zone in Syria to protect its Sunni population. Following the chemical weapons attacks in Syria the lack of a U.S. response led to the Saudis turning down a Security Council seat.  Early confrontation occurred in Bahrain with a Shiite population and Sunni government. The Saudis then intervened to support Sissi in Egypt against the Muslim Brotherhood government as the liberals drifted away from the Brotherhood. With Iranian and Russian support for the Syrian government in Damascus against rebels, the Saudis began to use oil policy leading to an effort to let oil prices fall by loosening production limits, believing it would hurt their rivals even more. This hurt Iran, Russia and Saudis, each in a different way. Some of the roots of the Russian involvement in Syria are also related to this. Russia responded to the oil price drop by relying less on exports, and letting devaluations help the Russian economy become more self sufficient. Iran by working to get a deal with the Obama administration on nuclear development to get out of the sanctions regime that hurt Iran's economy. The Saudis cut some subsidies and Prince Salman led the effort for an initial public offering for Saudi state oil company Aramco. As time progressed the Arab Spring with protests in Tunisia, Egypt, and even before that in Iran for greater freedom, morphed into a sectarian struggle between Shiites and Sunnis. The roots of Islamic State are in the unrest in Mosul, Iraq's largest city, with the Shiite government of a pro-Shiite prime minister, leading to the fall of the city to the militants. He was replaced by the current prime minister Abadi to accomodate U.S. insistence on keeping out sectarian sentiment. This is why the problem is so intractable. Desire for freedom plays a role, but religion also plays a role, not only that but there are two versions of Islam in the region.  Remember Gandhi's admonition- "an eye for an eye that makes the whole world blind," as India struggled to set up a democracy in the South Asian region, after the British left.         ...

Efforts to raise money by Eventbrite, a event ticketing internet startup in the U.S. Eventbrite raised $60 million from T. Rowe Price Group and Tiger Global Management in late stage financing. Private investments in late stage financing have accelerated in 2011-2013. In the 1st quarter of 2013 $2.2 billion was raised in late stage venture capital investments compared to $672 million raised through venture capital backed IPO's, according to figures put together by the National Venture Capital Association from Pricewaterhouse Coopers and Thomson Reuters. For 2012 late stage financing raised $8.6 billion compared to $21.5 billion in IPO's, including the $16 billion for Facebook IPO. Excluding the Facebook IPO, IPO's raised $5.5 billion, much less than the late stage financing. Investors who purchased Facebook Inc. privately just prior to the IPO, face paper losses at the current trading price in April 2013 of $25.73 per share, making investors wary of heavily hyped up IPO's. SurveyMonkey, a web survey company has raised $800 million from private equity and debt investments. The Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act lets startups remain private longer by allowing startups to have over 500 investors before having to disclose financial statements to the public....

The Federal Reserve researcher Karen Pence says 41% of households can borrow less than $3000 on their credit cards and 23% have been turned down or discouraged from applying for credit. This shows the general financial weakness of overly indebted American households and the overlayed effects of the housing crisis, and higher unemployment. It suggests the margin for consumers to weather difficulties and increase spending is thin.

Coca Cola has a mix of brands from orange juice to soda drinks. Sugary drinks increase obesity which leads to other diseases. The pandemic has shown the increased risks of obesity with studies showing obesity doubles the risk of being hospitalized for coronavirus 200% and increases risk of ending up in intensive care unit by 74%. UK prime minister Boris Johnson learned this the hard way and has changed all his eating and exercizing habits, and urges others to do the same. 

China, India, Mexico, Vietnam have much more to do to increase awareness of the risks of obesity from sugary drinks. The influence of Yoga, Ayurveda and traditional herbal foods and drinks is increasing awareness in India. This is not the same in China, Vietnam and other Communist countries where the dangers of smoking and sugary drinks are not part of the education put forward by the government.

Daniel Barenboim on Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. It was performed 200 years ago. The Ode to Joy section of the Ninth is the anthem of the European Union. Originally Beethoven wanted to dedicate it to the ideals of the French Revolution. Beethoven struggled with hearing loss after 1812. Many of his works were written during the period in Bonn around 1780-1792 in Bonn near Cologne where he was born, followed by his period in Vienna composing works for the Viennese court. He was a contemporary duringthe Napoleonic period of Mozart, Haydn, and the writer Goethe who was from Frankfurt. Because of struggles with his hearing loss Beethoven's symphonies record both the highs and the lows, the triumphs and the periods of loss, the nature of the human condition in a period of great social and economic awakening in Europe that led to the Industrial Revolution and modern Europe.

A number of critical issues need to be resolved for nuclear energy to play a critical role in energy supply. One is how to dispose of the waste product and storage facilities for the waste product, the other is fuel reprocessing tfor reuse and the separation of plutonium which can then be subject to possible theft for use in nuclear bombs. The other is the rising cost of concrete, steel and other products as well as the labor to build new nuclear plants. So a plant may now cost $7 billion rather than $3 billion for a 1500 megawatt nuclear reactor. Government incentives thus become a necessary part of this to reduce risk to companies. NRG Energy Dominion and Duke Energy have filed applications to build plants based on the incentives put in pklace by Congress. The subsidies include a 1.8 cent tax credit for each kilowatt hour produced which could be worth $140 million per reactor per year, a $500 million payout for each of the first 2 plants built, and $250 million each for the next four. if there are delays for reasons outside the company's control, and a total of $18.5 billion in loan guarantees. The loan guarantees are crucial to get banks to loan the money. Tho other issues are the shortage of skilled workers and contractors with nuclear certification, lack of potential sites for new reactors, and only 2 companies Japan Steel Works and France's Creusot Forge, a unit of Areva, have the technology for building key reactor parts such as massive pressure vessels. Another issue is whether other alternatives can supplement nuclear energy such as solar and the incentives that can be provided to solar energy. So nuclear energy which provides 20% of the US energy needs wil go much higher it will be supplemented by other energy moves and nuclear plants will be built but not to the extent that McCanin would like to see of 45 plants by 2030. ...

Vietnam has seen rapid growth in the last 20 years as it joined the shifted away from the state planned economy similar to China in the late 1980's, joined the worlds trading system, freed up the economy and attracted foreign investment. But something doesn't seem right. Looking at the Vietnam growth curve, growth in Vietnam's GDP vs growth of world GDP the curve seems to be following a similiar pattern, there is a sharp downturn in the early 1990's with a V shaped bounce back and a sharp downturn in early 2000 followed by another V shaped bounce back in growth to this date. As America begins its first of several years of credit contraction and investment contraction followed by similiar patterns in some European economies like the UK, Ireland, Spain and a slowdown in the rest of Europe, the question hangs over growth in Asia, from South Korea and Taiwan where recent elections reflected these concerns in electing politicians who promised new ways of kickstaring their economic growth, to China, India and Vietnam where the concerns are about how to meet the growing expectations of the large numbers of people, probably the majority of the people in these countries who have been left out of the economic development experienced in urban areas and by the new middle class. Corruption, the stock market collapse or severe setback, and a slowdown in their main export markets, and are problems shared by all 3 countries China, India and Vietnam. India and Vietnam share the problems of a poor infrastructure. In this new environment Asian countries will have to come up with innovative solutions to maintain growth and quality of growth, as some of the chaotic growth of the last 20 years may have come at some cost like that of the environment in the case of China and better solutions can be found than growth that sacrifices goals in health care and other necessary goals of balanced development....
