The authors of the Bowles-Simpson Presidents Commission for deficit reduction say there is growing discontent among voters with politicians who are obsessed with gaining partisan advantage. The failure of the political class and leadership in Italy and Greece, and in other nations of the EU, has put the fate of these countries in the hands of markets, which have relentlessly pushed up the borrowing rates of Greece, Italy, Spain and other countries, and taken future direction out of the hands of politicians. Erskine and Bowles say don't wait for a fiscal crisis to take action because it will be disastrous economically and politically, with everyone as losers and no winners. Timidity is not an option, leadership is required to take action that is big and broad, tackling tax expenditures, entitlement expenditures, defense, across the board....

President Obama will nominate Jacob Lew for Treasury Secretary to replace Timothy Geithner. In making this decision Obama stayed within his close advisors. Lew has held firm in budget negotiations, at one point walking out, and at another point in negotiations of the last two years saying flatly Medicaid is off the table. This signals Obama is not going to give in to Republican demands without a fight. In picking the 57 year old Lew, Obama is choosing someone who has substantial experience in budget matters and in working with Democratic leaders, all the way back to working with Speaker Tip O'Neill from the Reagan days. He was head of the Office of Management and Budget, and is currently White House Chief of Staff. He was chief operating officer of Citi Global Wealth Management and Citi Alternative Investments for 2 years, which suffered large losses in the 2008 financial crisis, but was not closely involved in the way decisions on investing were made. He was brought to Citigroup by Robert Rubin, a former Treasury Secretary under Clinton....

A drought in northern China is shaping up to be the longest since 1951, matching one in the winter of 1970-71. This will affect world food prices as adverse weather has also affected Russia, Australia and Argentina, which are major food producers. China has large reserves of grain and has the foreign exchage reserves to import wheat. China's wheat imports rose to 1.2 million tons in 2010, according to Global Trade Information Services. This compares with global output of 682 million metric tons of wheat in 2009, as estimated by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. Because China accounts for one sixth of global wheat production, this will put pressure on wheat prices. The Chinese government has cushioned price rises by asking provinces and cities to raise the minimum wage, which went up by 18% a year in Guangdong province.

The planned resubmission to the FDA for approval of diabetes drug Tresiba by Novo Nordisk with improved prospects. The Novo team has discussed its findings with regulators. If the resubmission is accepted Tresiba will be ready for launch in 2015 or early 2016. A once weeekly successor to Victoza, injectable treatment for diabetes, and an oral formulation for diabetes, are other new diabetes drugs Novo Nordisk plans to bring out.
