EU Commission president Leyen announces Pfizer will supply EU with 1.8 billion doses of Pfizer vaccine to 2023. The increased supplies will include booster shorts to increase immunity. Another change is the new date for 70% of European Union population to be vaccinated, which is now advanced to end of July instead of end of September. With new waves of the coronavirus affecting Europe, and criticism of the EU's earlier effort in securing vaccine supplies, more urgency has gone into the new effort in 2021. Leyen told Pfizer CEO Albert Bouria- "If I may say so, engineer the mRNA in a way that it can adapt to potential escape vaccines," at a joint press conference. Leyen thanked Pfizer for its enormous effort in boosting vaccine manufacture and delivery. This will help accelerate the vaccination effort in Europe after the slow start in March and April of 2021. Bringing much needed optimism and new hope of a lasting recovery both in economic activity, health and in the mood in Europe, which can then spread from the US and Europe to the rest of the world. ...

With Ukraine unwilling to give up the Donbass and Germany/France/UK wanting to prevent Russian favored deal adverse for Europe, US focus on Monroe Doctrine and western hemisphere, Ukraine Russia war is likely to drag on. This is what one sees in Merz, Zelensky, Rubio speeches at the Munich Security conference. In 2026 Germany+ (that includes France and the UK) does not see it in the interests of Europe to allow a Ukraine capitulation to Russian attacks and Germany has already allocated funds to rebuild its military to prevent this from affecting Germany+ interests in Europe. Even though the winter attacks on Ukraine grid and electricity infrastructure leaves Kviv and other cities in a dire situation it appears that without the 20 year security guarantee or something solid Ukraine is not willing to sign an agreement which it fears Russia could turn around and start the war again. Germany+ which is the position of the major parties in Germany 60-70 % of voters for the SDP, CDU, Greens and others except AfD with 20-30% of voters. (AfD may have reached a ceiling as CDU under Merz is tough on migrants). Which means about 70% of Germans will support a policy of joining UK and France in resisting Russian attacks. Russia may have lost so much in manpower may see the war as a vindication only if it can hold onto the Donbass which may make it harder to reach a deal. Zelensky says Ukrainians live there and is unwilling to leave the Donbas region. The net result is that Germany+ and Ukraine are not likely to concede ground, the US reluctant to commit to 20 year security condition for Ukraine as it focuses energy on the western hemisphere and the fentanyl, drug traffickers in Mexico, Venezuela and Colombia, and their support structures in Cuba, in addition to Iran and China's plan on Taiwan sees limits to what it can do beyond limiting oil's funding the Russian attacks. It is amisrepresentation to say that the US is the cause, as everything changed the moment China became an industrial power with the help of US business interests and returned to its own story of being subject to British and Japanese incursions in the 19th and 20th centuries, and sensing that it is an industrial power in its own right by 2020 and insisting on framing its own policy in the world. Europe always had its own narrative since 1600 long before the US became an industrial power under Teddy Roosevelt in 1904. In that narrative which now plays out again different European powers band together to prevent any dominant power in Europe (Russia in 2026) from gaining dominance. ...

Big banks in the US post big increases in profit and revenue in 2023. Chase bank posted 52% increase in first quarter 2023 profit and record revenue. Chase attracted $50 billion in deposits from midsized banks. The problems at midsized banks, including collapse of SVB bank, have not affected the large banks. Depositors shifted deposits from midsized banks to larger banks. The Fed's sharp increase in interest rates to 4.75%-5.0% from about zero% in 2021 have increased bank margins as interest rates on deposits have not been increased as much. The glut in deposits means banks could keep depositor interest rates lower. The result is that America's banking system is in strong shape during a localized banking crisis affecting startups and Silicon Valley.

Pew Research Center analysis of Biden's 2020 victory shows which groups played the big part in Biden's win. First time voters in 2018, 6% of total voters, mostly younger voters gave Biden a 26% margin over Trump. Other parts of the electorate that shifted in 2020 are Independents and Moderates who shifted to Biden. Catholics also shifted to Biden. Substantial leads in these voting blocs made the difference for Biden. In Arizona with Latinos, and Pennsylvania with the black population Biden did better than in the overall US electorate. In 2024 these same blocs are likely to play a key part. President Biden's visit to Ireland was well planned, his appeal to Irish roots genuinely felt and the connection made. His appeal to manufacturing workers is now based on accomplished results in fighting for worker's rights from teachers to railroad workers. Biden launched his campaign in front of a union audience, saying he saw things from the perspective of Scranton, and the working people he grew up with. In 2016 third party candidates got 6% of the vote, in 2020 only 2%. Of these voters Biden gained a 25% margin over Trump. Biden split the men's vote with Trump in 2020, compared to Trump's 11 point lead in 2016. Biden also maintained the share of women's votes of 54%  in the 2020 election. In 2024 the abortion issue is a significant factor for women. ...

This WSJ report says these local companies in Canada are pumping more oil from this patch in third quarter 2021 than in the same period in 2020. The pandemic and the lockdowns resulted in a sudden surge in demand in 2020 and 2021 for home delivery of goods by Amazon. Amazon expanded rapidly during this period. Now in 2022 Andy Jassy the new Amazon CEO is cutting back warehouse capacity and finding ways to reduce Amazon's size as buyers are cutting back now that the economy is getting back to some normalcy. Inventories are piling up for retailers Target and Walmart. During the pandemic Bezos set up hundreds of new warehouses and sorting centers, and employees doubled to 1.6 million from March 2020 to March of 2022. As instore buying came back and Amazon projections of long term demand turned to be too high Andy Jassy the new CEO is working on cutting back. Amazon says this extra capacity will mean $10 billion in extra costs in the first 6 months of 2022. Its stock lost about one third of its value under Andy Jassy's first year as CEO. Jassy and his team are working to sublease about 10 million square feet of excess warehouse space and renegotiate warehouse contracts. Dana Mattiolo looks at how Mr. Jassy tackled the new job of online retail with his obsession for detail, learning the new business from scratch. He was previously head of the cloud business at Amazon which generated three fourths of the profit of Amazon. Jassy says Amazon always chose the higher end of the numbers generated by its forecasting tool SCOT that showed how much warehouse and handling capacity was needed. SCOT tool generated high medium and low figures of what the demand would be and what resources were needed to tackle it. The policy of Bezos who ran the operations and delved into details during the pandemic was to not constrain sellers and buyers during the pandemic. Though not mentioned here this was a decision of Bezos that helped America tackle the pandemic in an effective way. And could be seen as a courageous move by Bezos of ignoring the risks and doing the right thing for America and the American people. It is now left to Jassy to figure out how to take corrective action but the basic policy of Bezos was done with the right intentions towards America during a period of serious danger of the pandemic when over a million lives have already been lost. ...

The new prime minister and government ministers put together by Macron in France look more like something from former president Nicholas Sarkozy. Two ministers close to Sarkozy are now Minister for the Interior and Minister for Culture. Macron is veering to the right in an effort to court voters on the right, as his best chance for reelection in 2022. With drop in GDP of 12.5% now predicted in France for 2020 by the IMF, high unemployment of 11.5% for 2021, and job redundancies, Macron faces a tough time as shown in this analysis. He is less popular today- than the rising star he appeared as in 2017, with only 35% of voters now supporting him.

Just as Democrats and Mr Biden learned from the experience of earlier lockdowns in the US and opened up the US economy in 2021 and 2022, China is now taking its own steps to move away from its earlier policies that affected the economy with frequent lockdowns and tight restrictions. There are some risks but in the long run this could get China to a better place after the people's fatigue with lockdowns that is similar to what happened in the US getting the US to where it is today.

A sign of the growing people to people relationship of the US and India is the number of Indians in US graduate schools which went up from 68,000 to 102,000 in the 2021-2022 academic year, up 48%. There almost as many Indians taking the GRE exam for entry into US graduate schools in 2023 as Americans taking GRE in the US. Another sign of the expanding people to people relationship is the decision of the Biden administration to give 1 million visitor visas to Indians in the coming year. In India physical sciences and humanities for GRE exceed engineering by a wide margin, showing the shift in subjects. Under India's new education policy NEP the shift is to a more multidisciplinary approach and allowing students to mix science subjects, math with humanities. This approach is seen as best for India to produce a new generation that can think for itself better than the purely engineering science or medical track graduates of the past who had limited knowledge of the humanities. This overly engineering focus has prevailed in the educational approaches of Japan and China during their rapid growth period. India under the Modi administration is betting on a wider knowedge of different and contrasting subjects and disciplines for its future. ...
