This condensed adaptation of the book by McNish and Silcoff on the collapse of Blackberry with the launch of the iPhone, tells a story of complacency at Research in Motion. Supreme Court Justice Brandeis once said that complacency was like all the seven sins rolled into one. In the smartphone industry the results were lethal. RIM founders Lazaridis and Balsillie responded to the iPhone launch believing this would not affect Blackberry. The founders rationalized that what would determine success in the business was security, battery life, ability to type, and using less capacity so as not to strain networks, areas in which RIM was strong and on which it had built its market presence. Design, using mobile to offer broad access to internet content, and the touch screen, were not seen as changing the very nature of the phone market. During the summer of 2007 many users shifted to the iPhone, and it cultivated a cult following using strategies Apple had honed on earlier product launches, reaching 1 million in sales. RIM was completely unprepared and could offer Verizon Communications a prototype called the Storm, which was launched hastily with product glitches still remaining. This happened in November 2008 and turned out to be complete disaster- initial sales were great selling 1 million units in 2 months of 2008, but reversed when almost all of the units were returned because the browser was slow and the clickable screen did not respond well. Nokia, another competitor, is also caught unawares sticking to its formula of success, when all the rules were being rewritten by Apple by showing what the new possiblilities were with the right technology in what one could do with a smartphone. Blackberry introduced a smartphone in 2012 by putting together a patchwork of licensed technologies. By this time Apple, Samsung and other competitors had captured significant market share, and the smartphone flopped. The successor Z10 also flopped in 2013. Nokia faced another problem- the inability to convert R&D, at times larger than Google and Apple, into new products, and the failure of management to grasp the potential of new technologies. According to a former employee, Nokia management turned down a internet ready phone with touch screen developed by its engineers in 2004....

South Korea's crowded hospital environment and Asian culture of being in continual close proximity for caretakers lets the MERS virus spread. The government's failure to alert hospitals of known cases means doctors are totally unaware of the MERS outbreak until many patients with MERS were transferred to larger hospitals in Seoul. The result inhaled droplets of MERS virus and rapid spread. The government feared there would be panic in the neighborhoods and acted too late. The known cases of MERS virus reached 95 cases, and 2500 people are being monitored. All this happened in a few days- The first infected patient was at an hopital in Asan, south of Seoul on May 12-14, 2015. He was sent to a larger hospital St Mary's in Pyeongtaek, near Seoul, with no one knowing he had been to Saudi Arabia and the UAE. From there he was transferred to Samsung Medical Center in Seoul, and he was diagnosed for MERS virus on May 20. By this time 37 people at MERS were infected, and one of them admitted to Samsung hospital in Seoul infected a large number of people there. President Park Geun-hye's Gallup Korea approval rating dropped six percentage points to 34%, and the government moved to make an "all-out response."...

The Dutch model for counterinsurgency which intertwines the civilian efforts with aid workers working inside the military, and military work focussing on security for the people so that economic development projects can go on, is an inspiration for the US effort. It has also reduced casualties for the Dutch. Only 19 deaths have occurred for the Dutch for 2000 personnel employed since they deployed in Uruzgan province in March 2006, where 350,000 Afghans live, according to icasualties.org. Sec of state Hillary Clinton describes this 3 D effort of defense, diplomacy, and development, as the model for her own efforts and that of the Obama administration. Dutch soldiers are ingrained in their training for this mission that their main work in Afghainstan will be economic development. The aid workers work closely with the soldiers and the commander Col. Gert-Jan Koolj says over time the focus has been on pure development. In fact diplomats from the Dutch foreigh ministry help to command the Dutch team in Uruzgan. One problem Clinton is facing is the shortage of civilian personnel to work in provincial reconstruction teams. Jack Mapanje is a visiting fellow at Newcastle University Center for Literary Arts in Britain and has written a memoir of his period in prison. He was in Mikuyu Prison in Malawi when the news of Mandela's release was brought to him as a rumor by a prison guard. The same guard had earlier brought the rumor in 1989 that South African President Klerk had started secret talks with Mandela. He describes the therapeutic effect of rumors in prison. At the time Martin Munthali was also a political prisoner in Malawi after being sent to prison by Malawi's president Hastings Banda, a year after Mandela was sent to prison. Mandela spent 27 years in prison before his release. After Mandela's release, political prisoners at Mikuyu were released and free elections were planned putting an end to the regime of Hastings Banda, who had supported the Apartheid government in South Africa.

The Chinese Ministry of Health has brought in 120,000 doctors to educate and is paying the company 1200 yuan out of the 3400 yuan fee for 3 years of classes. It is video and internet based and students progress on questions is monitored via intenet and the program is run from Beijing. Tests show students are making significant progress especially since the Chinese system of rural doctors is fallig apart with the intoroduction of privatized medicine and rural doctor training has suffered badly.The company was founded by Mark Engel and Gao Zhan.. Gao studied at the University of Munich for his PHD in Biochemistry and grew up in Shanghai. They own several health related businesses in China.

REALITY CHECK FOR E85 PUMPS IN CALIFORNIA, 1 OUT OF 10,000 Gives information on the history of efforts to promote alternative fuels in California. Along the way the focus in California was on reducing emissions and scrubbing the air. The oil industry and the auto industry have not fully supported the shift to alternative fuels even in a small way, most of the experiments have failed, efforts to legislate watered down, and as E85 is promoted by GM the problems loom larger than ever. Only one private station in San Diego provides E85 for the public to use, and even this station does not sell much because even though it costs 6% less at $3.10 a gallon than regular gasoline at $3.30, it provides 25% less energy and so costs more per mile. GM is trying to get Chevron to build a small number of pumps that give E85, but Chevron is not willing to make a large investment. The upshot is only halfhearted efforts in this direction and no leadership from auto companies, oil companies, and not enough enthusiasm in the larger public that would create momentum in that direction, even as there is so much talk about reducing gasoline consumption. California has 10,000 gas stations, 1 E85 gas station! ...

BUSH AND E85- ITS UPTO MARKET ECONOMICS, NO DIRECT ACTION AS IN BRAZIL. U.S. oil companies are skeptical about E85 and are not investing in pumps and filling stations. Only 800 of 17,000 gasoline filling stations in the U.S. have ethanol. Unless required to do so station owners are not likely to invest thousands of dollars in ethanol pumps. In Brazil the government took direct action to promote ethanol use, giving sugar cane companies cut rate loans and guaranteed prices for the product, and it required state run Petrobras to make ethanol available at filling stations. The cost auto companies say in this article is only about $100 extra per vehicle for extra anticorrosive materials and computer sensors for ethanol capable cars. With market economics and no direct government action the picture is fuzzy how the whole E85 project is going to come out.

For the first time minority babies formed a majority in 2011 with 50.4% of new babies, according to the Census Bureau. The median age of the non-Hispanic White population is 42 compared to 28 for Hispanics. Hispanics are right at the child bearing age. This also raises the issue of how the U.S. will educate the minority population. Today 13% of Hispanics have college degrees, 18% of Blacks and 31% of Whites. High school graduation rates in places like New York City for Hispanics are lagging far behind other groups. The economic downturn after the 2008 financial crisis has worsened the educational prospects for Hispanics and other minorities. The education of minority children is essential to improve the competitiveness of the U.S. in a global economy, as the educational levels in emerging markets accelerates with more opportunities.
