Lola Anderson remembers the note her father retrieved and handed her in 2012 London something she had written about wanting to take up rowing and winning gold for Britain. She considred it arrogant at the time, Her father Don gave it to her before he died in 2019. He was himself in rowing for Britain. Today she wins the 4 person scull rowing Olympic gold medal through a last minute effort - a last stroke victory. She calls it the most valuable thing I have along with the medal.

“I still had the belief and the belief never left,” she said. “You have to learn from your tough experiences and I was determined this time around to make sure that if I came back we’d go for a gold."

Serious problems are ailing the television channels in the US. This is because the siloing of channels into political spaces as audiences converge to watch particular channels is resulting in these channels unable to take positions based on the merits of issues. Climate change is one example- today no television channel in the US asks the question what would happen to the climate if the US loses another 4 years 2024-2028 in dealing with the climate challenge- makes no investment in climate change action. This is a grave and serious matter that needs to be at the top of discussions alongside the forest fires and floods that show up at the top of news pages every day. This is now the central issue at one of the channels as James Murdoch and his wife Kathryn ask this question of their own family business in television channels in the US and Europe. This is also a larger issue facing the television business.  Another issue is that internet business such as Twitter X, Facebook, TikTok are also concerned with ratings, and think mistakenly that being neutral about climate change action is acceptable, that it is someone else's problem, not theirs. It would cost upwards of 1 trillion dollars in 2028 for the US to simply to address the climate change problems arising from no action for the next 4 years. The problem may become hard to control by then regardless of how much money is put into tackling it, making life difficult on this planet. ...

President Biden has called for limiting price increases on home and apartment rentals to 5%, and Harris has proposed aid for families spending more than 30% of household income on housing costs.  Harris's role for the Border was limited to telling Central American migrants to stay home. Much of the migration was a result of wars started in the Reagan years in Central American states of Nicaragua and San Salvador. This destabilized the region and led to gangs taking over parts of the country in San Salvador and entrenching Castro style regime in Nicaragua, leading to outward migration of young people. As this report points out Harris was supposed to take on decades of such misguided policies in Central America in a few months. A drought hit agricultural coffee regions of Guatemala increasing migration. Her role instead was to ensure several wins. Win No.1 to generate stability setting up the peaceful transfer of power in Guatemala, singling out corrupt regimes. Win No. 2 to generate jobs. US AID and IFDC loans were increased, foreign investment attracted to generate 250,000 jobs. Win No. 3 the increased stability led to gradually declining migration from Central America. What replaced it was Venezuela. And that is a repeat story of Reagan style wars in Central America. Under the Trump Administration the US did not take up the Monroe Doctrine and act directly to support a stable fairly elected government in Venezuela, an obvious solution. Instead going half way- destabilizing the government but then left it on its own. The result about a third of the population leaving the country in these years to Colombia and other parts of Latin America in a immense humanitarian tragedy.  In 2023 Venezuelans not Guatemalans entered at the US Border in large numbers, most of them middle class families that left Venezuela after hyperinflation and mismanagement of the economy. Realizing the danger by January 2024 Biden negotiated with Senate Minority Leader McConnell and his Republican representative Senator Lankford to pass legislation in the Senate closing the Border. All that was needed was the House to act and 30 years of Border problem would be solved.This was blocked in the House by new Speaker Mike Johnson on advice from former president Trump who chose to use the issue in the 2024 election. Biden then used his executive powers to close the Border leading to lower numbers of migrants under Biden by July 2024 than under Trump. Migration Border Czar was never a term used by Democrats in the Obama and Biden years. Biden who also served in a role given migration as one of the issues to handle under Obama, had this as only one of his assignments. Biden played more important roles in foreign policy with his experience as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for decades. Border policy was made by president Obama and his advisers. The same is true of Harris, Border policy being done by president Biden and his advisers. Similar to Biden's role as VP Harris was given assignment to cover foreign policy and was the US representative at 3 Munich Security Conferences in 2021-2024 following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Chancellor Scholz of Germany said of Harris last week that he had full confidence in Harris as both competent and experienced. ...

Kamala Harris support could exceed the 92% won by Biden in 2020 in Detroit. Harris could also exceed the 45% support in Macomb County for Biden in 2020, as Whitmer support was 52% in 2022 Governor's election. Macomb is a county with mostly white voters and union voters.  Union vote is split with concerns about EV's helping Trump, and standing on the picket line in a UAW strike helping Biden. Harris is also doing much better with younger voters who feel energized by Harris. Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer did well even with voters in western Michigan towns like Grand Rapids in 2022.

These television channels along with CNN and NBC, ABC now appeal to an older demographic in the mid to late sixties age. Much of the younger audience gets its information from the internet. Murdoch failed to develop the internet side of the business appealing to younger audiences. In this sense much of the influence of these older television channels is in a fluid shape likely to diminish in the future. ...
