Ron Pinnelli of AutoData says the main difference between automakers doing well and ones that are struggling is a few big successes and a solid product line. The Detroit automakers need a good hit, a home run like the Honda Civic and some solid sellers. This is what Ford, GM need, one or two good hits and a the rest of the line pretty solid. Note auto sales increase 0.6 % overall for Feb. 2006 and the market is holding up. Note also 1) GM is deemphasizing fleet sales- "taking our medicine and going on." - Good thing in the long run. 2) Toyota sales not up by that much 2.6% in Feb. 2006. 3) Honda's success is a result of new Honda Civic sales which went up by 37% in Feb 2006, and helped increase Honda's market share from 7.8% in the prior year to 8.5%, according to Autodata.

Efforts to train China's rural village doctors.How a company Haoyisheng which means Good Doctor has setup 6000 clasrooms across rural China to educate rural doctors who have little medical training. The Chinese Ministry of Health has brought in 120,000 doctors to educate and is paying the company 1200 yuan out of the 3400 yuan fee for 3 years of classes. It is video and internet based and students progress on questions is monitored via intenet and the program is run from Beijing. Tests show students are making significant progress especially since the Chinese system of rural doctors is fallig apart with the intoroduction of privatized medicine and rural doctor training has suffered badly.The company was founded by Mark Engel and Gao Zhan.. Gao studied at the University of Munich for his PHD in Biochemistry and grew up in Shanghai. They own several health related businesses in China.

A 41 year old doctor, Vasant Narasimhan, is the new CEO of Novartis in Feb. 2018. Under Narasimhan R&D is expected to get prominence. His predecesor Mr. Jimenez's focus was on developing new prescription drugs. Dr. Narasimhan sees a shift to new technology, improving data science and digital capabilities to discover new medicines. This shift raises the possibility of a spinoff of the Alcon eyecare business and the Sandoz generics business.   Narasimhan joined Novartis in 2005 from consultancy Mckinsey & Co. and becoming head of R&D. He is expected to push a series of tech based initiatives including artificial intelligence to be used for new biomarkers showing effectiveness of treatment, new sensor technologies developed with Microsoft. This shift is a result of the earlier effort under previous CEO's to make up for the loss of patent protection on profitable drugs by diversifying into consumer healthcare. During the period under Jimenez Novartis share price performance was mediocre, rising 41% over 8 years. With majorities in both houses of parliament Lopez Obrador now has the mandate to come up with an independent position for Mexico on issues of NAFTA negotiation, and social programs to lift Mexico's poor and working class, come up with a new way to reduce violence and corruption in society.  Stakes are large in the relationship with the U.S. Mexico exported $340 billion of products to the U.S. and imported $276 billion in goods. On NAFTA Obrador supports the current negotiations and will have his advisers present at the negotiations. Obrador says Mexico is a country with a lot of natural resources and wealth, so that "the demise of the existing NAFTA will not be fatal for Mexicans." ...

Reorganizing a large and ineffective sales force at H-P is one of the biggest challenges facing new CEO Mark Hurd, who took the job in 2005. Under CEO Carly Fiorina the situation had deteriorated. The H-P sales force has become a large bureaucracy which takes much longer to get things done, with the added problems of duplication, redundant layers of management, delays getting approvals and so on. Corporate customers had difficulty reaching salespeople, and getting simple tasks done such as price quotes or getting a sample product took way too long for customers. Salespeople spent only 30% of their time in front of customers, with the bulk of their time spent navigating the large H-P bureaucracy to get things done. Out of 17000 salespeople only 10000 sell to customers, 7000 or 40% are in support or administrative positions. Four people from different groups can be found chasing the same customer, and different quotes from different salespeople cause duplication and confusion. H-P corporate salespeople did not specialize in any particular product area. And salespeople used 30 different types of software to track sales because of years of acquisitions, including the acquisition of Compaq. There are 11 layers of managers between the CEO and corporate customers. Hurd's solution was to organize the sales force so that it was responsible for specific products and specific countries, similiar to the situation he had seen at his previous company NCR. Responsibility and authority for decisionmaking were matched and clearly assigned. Each salesperson had a narrower focus and was to be limited to 3 accounts. H-P's 2000 corporate accounts would have just one salesperson to interface with. Sales would only use one type of software from Oracle Corporation. Changing an organization the size of H-P is a slow process. A year after these changes, the VP of Information Technology at Lear Corporation, says he still does not know who has been assigned as the salesperson for Lear. He has not seen much change in H-P sales. Hurd also reduced the number of employees by 10%, or about 14,500 people. After these layoffs the layers of management have been cut from eleven to eight between Hurd and the corporate customer, still too big a set of layers. ...

Feldstein wants to see a stronger dollar, that is less inflation eroding the value or purchasing power of the dollar at home. Abroad he wants to see a weaker dollar in relation to Europe, Japan and Canada where about half of US imports originate. And a weaker dollar in relation to lower wage Asian countries to improve America's trade balance. Better to do this now than to wait a few years when the adjustments needed would be greater. America needs to export more and import less to improve the trade balance. A competitive dollar in relation to trading partners in Europe and Asia would provide the improvement in the trade balance that the U.S. needs for keeping economic growth. With the risks to the economy from declining housing prices improving the trade balance becomes important. During the 1985-1988 period the dollar declined in value significantly, falling 37%, but the inflation rate averaged 3.1%,says Feldstein. This is what he means by having astrong dollar at home, which is to say not eroding its purchasing value, while at the same time increasing exports and reducing imports. During this period merchandise exports increased by 40% while imports increased at half that pace. A repeat of that experience is possible and necessary to maintain growth, according to Feldstein. See the link to McKinnon, at Stanford, The Yuan and the Greenback, WSJ, August 29, 2006, which cautions against anything but a very gradual and carefully managed appreciation of the yuan, giving importance to inflation and interest rate differentials between the US and China. One point to note narrowing of interest rate differentials between the US and China is seen as backdrop for dollar weakening on exchange rate basis. McKinnon appears to consider a smaller interest rate differential as a cue for an even lower appreciation of the yuan, see his example of 2% inflation in the US and 3% interest rates. Interestingly the two approaches may complement each other. Offering a perspective of China maintaining its growth and not risking deflation or slowdown, and of the US maintaining its growth and not risking a slowdown from the housing market collapse, by strong domestic investment and exports. How to keep both economies going may be the policymakers challenge for strong global economic growth....

Global aid to agriculture in developing countries is about $5 billion a year. Mr Obama made the decision to double U.S> aid to developing countries farmers to more than $1 billion ayear in 2010. THe NYT reports that with the G8 meeting in Italy in July, America will spend $3.5 billion dollars over 3 years for helping farmers in developing countries. This according to Michael Fromans, an Obama adminsitration official is going to be new money. As far as the other G8 countries are concerned it could include old money for the total $15 billion committed. Since the worst hit areas for agriculture are in Africa, and Africa has lost a lot of ground in development in the last 20 years, suffering neglect in aid to farmers over 20 years both form the American administrations and their own governments, it is surprising that the amount and the details for where it would go in Africa are not revealed. Mr Obama has grasped the need not just for shipping food assistance from the USA, but need to help farmers. He agrees with ANdrew Natsios former head of Agency of International Development, who says that most of the poorest people in developing countries are farmers and herders living in the countryside, the crux of any effort to improve their lives has to start with agriculture. Obama advocates using the "tried and true agricultural methodfs and technologies that are cheap and are efficient but can have huge impact" in the lives of people. Malawi, is a good example, say Prof. Sachs of Columbia University, as subsidies for fertilizer sharply increased food production. Sachs says it is possible to double or triple food production by giving small-holder farmers access to high yielding seeds, fertilizer and agricultural extension services. But more needs to be done and devloping countries themselves that have made progress like India, China and Brazil can provide their know-how and experts and should have been brought into this, which is another reason why there is no reason for a G-8 summit of countries of European origin. An enlarged organization can bring in the resources and ideas of all the major countries in the world, to especially bear in on Africa, where alot needs to be done. Just to get an idea the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization says the global economic crisis will put another 100 million people into facing hunger this year....

For passengers air travel nowadays is travelling on planes that are often totally booked. This is because airlines are cutting flights. And with fewer passengers after the economic crisis hit, airlines are having a difficult time cutting flights enough to meet the continuing drop in the number of passengers. Before the crisis business and international travel was a good source of revenue, now this is fading as there is more competition on transatlantic routes with about 50 airlines offering flights between US cities and European cities. The liberalization of air travel between the two continents with the 2007 "open skies" agreement is keeping downward pressure on prices. The International Air Transport Association says the number of passengers travelling on business and first class tickets between N. America and Europe was down 18.4% in April 2009, compared with same month in 2008. Traffic between N. America and Asia was down 26%, for the same period. This is hitting Lufthansa ansd KLM-Air France hard, but is helping Easyjet, Ryanair, and Air Berlin. As demand drops airlines will continue to cut capacity, and this will be done by cutting the number of flights on a route and using smaller planes. After all this capacity cutting takes place by September, OAG Aviation estimates that the seats on domestic flights will drop to 66.5 million from a peak of 84 million in 2001, a drop of 21%. Some airlines which rely less on corporate travellers will not see as steep a drop. These airlines are Southwest, JetBlue and AirTran. Airlines that may not survive the effects of the economic crisis, with tight credit and drop in air travel, and volatile oil prices, are United Airlines and US Airways. United relied heavily on corporate and trans-Pacific fliers before the economic crisis. Fitrch Ratings cites this in reducing the credit rating for United to junk status, as well as the heavy debt maturities in 2009 and 2010. In June 2009 United raised $175 million by issuing new debt, but at an interest rate of 17%. At US Airways the combined airline with America West after a$1.5 billion merger is struggling. It has the thinnest cash position of any airline according to a Morningstar research analyst, and may need further borrowing to meet debt payments. With all assets already mortgaged US Airways may have little borrowing capability left....

This is the higher education equivalent of the moonshot says one education expert. The community college initiative of President Obama would double the numbe of people graduating out of community colleges. About six million students a year enroll for credit at America's 1200 community colleges, but only about 555,000 earn a two year degree, and another 295,000 a year earn a vocational certificate. The administration is putting a big emphasis on community colleges. Martha Kanter, the former chancellor of the Foothill-De ANza Community college district in California, has been appointed to the No.2 position in the Education Department. Arne Duncan made his first official visit to Miami community college, and Joseph BIden's wife teaches at acommunity college. The way community colleges have functioned in the American system of higher education, is that they provide post-secondary schooling for low-income studetns who have few other options. This works through open admissions. And most students are employed adults attending parttime; and according to some studies more than half need remedial courses before tackling college level work. The Obama effort is to require community colleges to work harder to retain students until graduation, and to encourage partnerships between community colleges and employers to offer workforce training. Without the access to the additional funding community colleges would actually find themselves in a bind, with rising enrollment rates just as their funding access deteriorates with state spending budget cuts. Debra Bragg, co-director of the Forum on the Future of Public Education at the University of Illinois, says that most new graduates produced under the Obama proposal would complete certificate programs, usually lasting 6 months to ayear , offering specific credentials for middle skill jobs. These jobs could be in healthcare, information technology, or other growing areas. An example id autoworkers in Michigan taking up new skills for jobs in other fields. In this sense this program can be immensely useful in closing the gap. Turner Adair, head of Britain's Financial Regulatory Authority thinks that banks have assumed an outsize role in the British and world economy, and are coopting their regulators. He sees the need to check many of the excesses. Why not use profits to build up reserves rather than give out huge bonuses and paychecks, he asks. He sees the need to challenge the accepted thinking on Wall Street and in the City of London, where the ideology of efficient markets became embedded, as it did also in the regulatory community. He came in the week Lehman Brothers collapsed as chairman of the FSA. And he wants to shake up the existing thinking. In March, the Turner Review. a 126 page report was published. A lot of attention was paid to his suggesting atax on financial transactions, called the Tobin tax, but its designed more to get people thinking and questionning the existing way of running banking as Turner said in an interview, "we have begun to accept this idea of liquidity as the new God." Can British or American society and the financial industry in both countries work to the benefit of both? Nobel prize winning economists and other experts have advised ashift to productive investments that grow the economy using technology, science and brainpower and new ideas, as opposed to the investment in mortgages and other speculative investments. As the regulators -including former and current heads of the SEC, and other regulatory bodies in the US, Cox, Schapiro and others- once held on to the same theory of uninhibited operation of free markets as best for generating increased wealth for society as the banking community, they tended to get co-opted in letting bad practices flourish. He says, "banks need to be willing, like the regulator, to recognize that there are some profitable activities so unlikely to have a social benefit, direct or indirect, that they should voluntarily walk away from them." Investments in science, technology and new products, as in the 60's that generated a revolution in living standards, than the mortgages and consumer lending of the last decade, is what he may be saying, as do these Nobel prize winning economists....

Toyota is expanding an original recall announced in late 2009 for 4.3 million cars by adding an additional 1.1 million cars. That recall involved pedals catching on floor mats. The original recall followed afatal car accident for a Lexus E350 sedan on a San Diego highway when it accelerated out of control killing all 4 occupants. For Akio Toyoda this comes as something he suspected could happen when he assumed the CEO position last June. He said then that Toyota had made amistake in the last decade with its push to become the world's largest carmaker under previous CEO's Okuda and Watanabe. See the links to this where his father Shoichiro Toyoda had serious concerns about how the company was run and a sense of foreboding about problems still to come. Shoichiro's sense was that the company was becoming too complacent and expanding too quickly. This was also the reason he worked behind the scenes to get Akio into the CEO position as someone who could take Toyota back to its original spirit. This may make swallowing the problems -and the apology which has taken so long for Akio- more difficult, as he had a sense all along that things weren't running the way they should. Under Okuda and Watanabe the quality problems were already becoming evident. Okuda became CEO in 1995 and chairman in 1999. Between 2000 and 2007 Toyota sales expanded from 1.6 millon to 2.6 million in the USA and it expanded with new manufacturing facilities in the USA- a full size pickup plant in San Antonio in 2005, a RAV4 sport utility plant in Ontario in 2008 and another plant in Mississippi. With the rapid expansion came quality problems and in 2005 Toyota recalled 2.38 millon vehicles, more than it sold that year. Watanabe who was president in 2006 delayed introductions of models for 6 months to give engineers more time to work on improvments in design. A two month internal review showed at the time that the product development process was'nt working the way it should- it showed that engineers were not conducting the rigorous quality checks that were an established practice at Toyota and sending out products relying on computer simulations. Toyota engineers from that period say the current problems may have some connection to problems that may have not been completely addressed from that period....
