Societe General's Jerome Kerviel worked at a Delta trading desk in the investment banking operation. Kweku Adaboli, 31, a UBS trader, worked at a Delta One trading desk specialized in exchange-traded funds and other securities positions. He is charged with two counts of false accounting and one count of fraud. Delta is a term in the banking industry for how a bank can customize a security for a client, and following this closely replicate another transaction that acts to mitigate the risk. The first transaction is a "derivative" trade, which is basically a bet on the direction of a group of stocks or other securities. Jerome Kerviel was accused of trying to hide $7.2 billion in losses and was sentenced to three years in prison. The Delta One trading desks can generate $1 billion in annual revenue for banks and are used by Societe Generale, BNP Paribas, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley U.S. At the same time risk is increasing with unpredictability and higher volatility in the financial markets in 2011. Another feature of the trader problems at UBS and Societe Generale is the relative youth and lack of experience of the traders, and that risk management systems allow traders with insignificant experience to make such large transactions. Other questions about how much risk a bank should be allowed to take, and about ring fencing the investment banking units of each bank, are relevant. Swiss banking regulators were working to ringfence the investment banking units of UBS and other Swiss banks after earlier problems at Swiss banks in the global financial crisis of 2008. Under the proposed regulation by Swiss regulators UBS investment banking unit would be headquartered in another country and hold its own capital, and be subject to local regulators. ...

Goldman Sachs Group is in negotiations with the U.S. government to admit responsibility for its role in the 1MDB corruption scandal in Malaysia and pay a $2 billion fine. The WSJ reports that Goldman raised $6.5 billion for 1MDB, or 1Malaysia Development BhD. Money raised was intended to be used for development and infrastructure in Malaysia. WSJ points out that it was misused by Malaysian government advisors under the government of Mr. Najib Razak, and 2 Goldman bankers. Goldman pursued $600 million in fees and ignored red flags that this misuse of funds was happening. Malaysia's newly elected government of Mr. Mahathir Mohammed is trying to clear up the mess of the previous government of Mr. Najib Razak, and has charged Goldman in a separate criminal investigation including 17 former and current employees of Goldman offices in Asia. Mr. Mahathir Mohammed came to power on an anti-corruption platform. The WSJ was the first to look into problems at the development fund, which it has continued to do for many years, helping Malaysia redirect development finances for growth. ...

Oxford Biomedica is the company that is part of the consortium making the coronavirus vaccine being developed by Oxford University's Jenner Institute.  Her Mr. Dawson describes the challenges he faced and cash crunches 4 times in 12 years, the last 4 years ago. The turning point he says was in 2012 when the cell and gene therapy was validated with a new drug developed for a form of cancer using this method. Oxford Biomedica is setting up a facility for manufacturing the vaccine in England at a 84,000 square foot former Royal Mail sorting facility in the city's business park called Oxpark. Dawson says cell and gene therapy is going to be big in health care. He did not see it coming till 2012. In 2014 he says during a cash crunch they had realized that what they had to do at Biomedica was to get to the time when it was going to be big. Stephen Bannon the controversial adviser to president Trump is removed from the National Security Council cabinet level principals committee at the insistence of the National Security Adviser to president Trump, Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster. In addition the chairman of the Joint CHiefs of Staff and the director of national intelligence, were added back to the principals committee of NSC, and the earlier decision to have them as occasional participants was seen as a serious mistake, with Mr. Trump having wanting to change this much earlier. Karl Rove was a senior adviser to president Bush, but like other advisers was not put on the National Security Council. The reversal of the Bannon appointment brings the NSC to its normal membership.This report in the NYT refers to the large role played by Mr. Bannon in the early days with Bannon pushing for the first travel ban that was struck down in the courts, and for the ultimatum in negotiations with the Freedom Caucus that worsened relations with Republicans in Congress. Her inventive skills, networking and collaboration with other parts of Toshiba, hard work and perseverance paid off when her team solved the problem of being able to view the 3-D television without glasses. The solution was a new algorithm based on Toshiba processer Cell that sent different images to the left and right eyes. Here she describes the astonishment with which her team received the news that a woman was in charge of the team, just returning from maternity leave, and only 39! Was it tough as a woman? Yes, she says! Rieko was exceptional in many ways. Japan's challenge is to get more women with even a fraction of Rieko's talent to make a huge difference in a country where women play a minor role in positions of responsibility and initiative at all levels. It would make a large difference in Japan's prospects in the global economy- about 8.2 million more workers, and an estimated 15% increase in GNP....

Practically the whole town of Bergamo moved to Milan to watch the game for a home team. Italian dfoctors say there was a surge in coronavirus cases two weeks after the game on February 19. The virus then hit both Spain and Italy.  New York also went ahead with games with Madison Square Garden putting 100,000 people through its doors, having not received government guidance to stop. It was not till March 12 that game locations and stadiums were shut down. Doctors in infectious diseases say this was a distinctive amplifier, mass gatherings of people spread the virus quickly, especially one as contagious as this one. This report says in early January the coronavirus arrived from Munich, and in mid-February was still based on rumors about its spread in Lombardy, Italy, so that authorites were lax about it, not understanding the threat being faced.  ...

In just 7 months the Trump administration has a falling apart with business leaders and union leaders on the days following the Charlottesville car attack. Here Richard Trumka gives his reasons in the NYT for withdrawing from the president's Manufacturing Council. He says Trump presented big idea such as infrastructure and fair trade deals but he is not likely to live up to his promises. Only tweaks are expected on NAFTA says Trumka, and labor rights are taking a hit under president Trump. The AFL-CIO was not called to a single meeting by president Trump, says Trumka. He now sees the Trump administration in the same way as other political leaders- filled with broken promises. In the case of the Trump administration he sees working families ending up much worse off. Trumka says a University of Pennsylvania study shows even if a plan for infrastructure comes up the president's budget proposal would sink it- leading to a net loss of $55 billion for highway, water facilities and public transit. Trumka points out the damage to the social safety net as a matter of serious concern- cutting $1.5 trillion from Medicaid, $59 billion from Medicare, $64 billion from Social Security over 10 years. With cuts to construction workers wages, and a 6% cut for government workers. He calls as "morally bankrupt" and bad economic actions the effort for large scale deportation.  He calls the events in Charlottesville and the president's condoning of the violence in Charlottesville by blaming both sides, the last straw for his union. Separately business leaders resigned from two advisory groups. Chase CEO Dimon pointed out that for economic progress the basic consensus in the country must be preserved, and divisive rhetoric can lead to the unraveling of economic progress- the vital link between society, politics and the economy in line with America's ideals being evident to the business community, as well as to labor. ...

This report in DW.com presents a situation where supply of oil runs out as demand way exceeds supply as shale oils in US are depleted, and no new reserves are found. A story in WSJ last week reports that the salty water from shale oil extraction is injected back into reservoirs at a rate that creates serious problems in the Permian Basian of the US including East Texas. The IEA forecast in 2026 shows about 97 million b/d of production and demand slightly exceeding this in both 2030 and 2050 which would suggest defossilization has not taken place. Yet the US pullout from defossilization under DJT is sure to be reversed by future governments in as short as 3 years, and the current DJT policy is simply a response to the cost of living concerns of the majority of Americans. The scenario that fossil fuels will be required forever is promoted by the oil companies and by OPEC+ including Russia. But this situation will reverse as the cost of living crisis and the low wages and incomes, loss of factory jobs, low savings, health care inflation, is tackled under the DJT administration and the US economy becomes stronger with lower inflation.  This scenario of  steady oil demand can be reversed if China and India and Europe push ahead with renewable energy and technological change as is happening today, and will not be seriously impacted when the US joins the battle with its renewable energy push in 2028. This is not just an optimistic scenario, it is a balanced one as private industry in the US will sense this and move ahead with development of new technologies for renewable energy so as not to fall behind and to pioneer on their own. That is the history of innovation in the US for the last 100 years and will not change. ...

Not only are they included, they play a significant role in the diet. Also included and playing a large role in the diet are lentils and beans which provide a significant source of protein. When the idea of vegetarianism is broadened to a more normal vegetarianism as practiced in countries like India and includes dairy, lentils and beans, the diet is able to provide most of the nutrients needed. By including this kind of vegetarian food as an integral part of the diet and reducing meat is another way the health needs of Americans facing a high rate of obesity and other medical problems can be met. If insurance companies were to give incentives for increased consumption of these vegetarian foods and lowered consumption of meat, and the public was made aware of its benefits through advertising, the cost of health care in the U.S. could be brought down....

Sheila Bair is playing a larger and larger role in this crisis as the Bush administration and Paulson take a series of missteps. She had earlier proposed her own plan for addressing the roots of the crisis which she said are home prices, and preventing risisng foreclosures was the best way to address this. She has offered loan modifications through FDIC run IndyMac bank. Now she speaks up about her disagreement with how the crisis should be handled as little has been done to help homeowners considering the scale of the crisis. Alan Blinder of Princeton university, a former Fed vice chairman has called her the real hero in all this throughout this year as she has had the foresight to suggest action to help homeowners, and has acted vigorously in other areas related to the banks. "Why there has been such a political focus on making sure we are not unduly helping borrowers but then we are providing this massive assistance at the institutional level, I don't understand it." And Sheila Bair went on to say "This agency, with its genesis in the Great Depression, has a sense of purpose now perhaps more than any other agency." Her term as chairman of the FDIC lasts till mid 2011 and her term on the FDIC Board till 2013. With 2 weeks to go for the Presidential election and her term going into the next administration, her voice is increasingly the one that will be heard by policymakers coming to grips with the economy. ...

The former Chief Election Commissioner of India, Mr. S.Y Quraishi, looks at the 2019 Nigerian elections. Nigeria has about 47% of the population of West Africa. Muslims and Christians are almost equal in numbers and there are 300 ethnic groups. About 82.3 million voters were registered to vote. Quraishi sees the 41% registered voters to be disproportionate to the total population. In India about 62% of the total population is registered to vote. The Independent National Election Commission (INEC) chairman, Mr. Mahmood Yakubu, says security, fake news, hate  speech, and expenditure control are the top issues. Postponement, delays and chaos at polling stations contributed to a historic low turnout, 35.6% compared to 44% in 2015. Police presence was discreet and needed for the elections. A coalition of 70 civic organizations monitored the elections and contributed to its credibility. In Lagos there were 1.1 million valid votes. India has strong interest in Nigeria's democracy. Over 135 Indian companies have operations in Nigeria, including  State Bank of India, Bharti Airtel, Tata, Bajaj, Birla, Kirloskar, Mahindra. The election commissions of the two countries have met yet there is need for more engagement. About 50,000 Indians live in Nigeria. By continuing the process established by the two earlier elections including a peaceful transition from Mr. Goodfellow to Mr. Buhari, Nigeria is strengthening the democratic process. In continuing the fight against corruption, building infrastructure, the difficult process of modernization and development is taking place even with difficult economic conditions. ...

It is ameasure of how far the PC business has come since Mr Hurd was made CEO 4 years ago, and after he hired Mr Bradley a former Palm CEO to shake up the PC business. Mr. Bradley has made the PC division supply chain more efficinet especially in the fast growing consumer netbook PC business, and has cut costs. Meantime the printer business under Joshi has stagnated. The PC business was merged into printer business by Fiorina in the hope that Joshi could make a difference. Bradley has run alean business and improved PC margins even as prices of PC's have tumbled. HP also passed Dell in PC's sold. In the quarter ending July 31,2009 HP PC sales were$8.43 billion and $386 million in earnings, accounting for 12% of profits, printer and ink were $5.66 billion and $960 million in earnings for 30% of overall profit. A Whirlpool appliance factory in Amiens in the Somme region is slated for closure and relocation to Poland. Emmanual Macron made a surprise visit to the factory to talk to worker representatives. He says he cannot prevent the closure but can work to arrange for good terms for the closure. Marine Le Pen the far right candidate also visited the site at the factory gates where workers were on strike. Afterwards Macron said "I try to fix problems, not to exploit them."  Macron has come under criticism in the French press for taking too much for granted in the second round and not fighting for support the way he had earlier. Le Pen has appealed to workers facing factory closure and areas that have been neglected as factories closed in previous years. In the north and northeast smaller towns and areas neglected in the tech boom and facing deindustrialization have turned to Le Pen. Macron's effort to go into these areas is part of his style and his conviction that the problems have to be tackled in the deindustrialized areas, and to break the image that the National Front is striving to create of a candidate from investment banking that does not understand workers. ...

BAE Systems has a $120 million contract to provide social anthropologists to the Defense Department of the USA. In December, L-3 Communications Holdings Inc. acquired International Resources Ltd, a Washington based economic-development firm which is different from its military advisory business. This is the way the Defense Department and the suppliers to the Defense department are changing in response to Defense Secretary Gates philosophy that economic development, rule of law programs and strategic communications and a whole host of soft power initiatives are essential needs, and to the new President's philosophy. Now US Defense suppliers Lockheed and Northrop are providing peacekeepers thorugh the State Department, and BAE SYstems is providing social anthropologists in addition to armored vehicles to go with US troops on village patrols. The State Department, Agency of International Development and a changing Defense Department are all getting the attention of suppliers who are building new relationships for new needs and new services tackle the issues of terrorism, poverty, drugs and crime that generate or exacerbate conflict in other countries. In the first budget presented recently Obama pledged $50 billion double the amount before for foreign assistance. A portion of the $130 billion requested for wartime operations in 2010 will be allocated to these new kinds of services which are more effective and generate better understanding and support for the US in other countries....

Prof. Gorton and Prof. Metrick of the Yale School of Management review 16 scholarly studies and papers on the causes of the 2008-2009 global financial crisis in the current isue of the Journal of Economic Literature. Another article in the same journal reviews 21 books on the subject. Samuelson says the most cited causes- lax regulation and passive regulators, and the policy of home ownership that encourage the packaging and of securitization of mortgages to government sponsored agencies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac- are only the surface causes. If we are to explain how a whole society seemed to believe in the idea that somehow there was a way to maintain a rising tide continuously, with only small corrections over several decades, by the clever manipulation of monetary and fiscal policies; then one has to look to the hubris of economists who acted as if this was possible and the gullibility of business and a public that desperately wanted to believe as some have put it "that this time it was different," or that shrewd management of economic policy could actually bring about such a panacea. The abiding lesson is economic policies based on a better understanding of how modern industrial economies work are merely useful tools, no more no less, and there is no substitute for a good ethic, wise management and careful thinking on the part of the public, business and government, particularly for the people in leadership positions. ...

Biden was able to get the US on track for huge investments in infrastructure, chips, climate change, renewable energy, cost of living help, of trillions of dollars. (Not much was actually done for infrastructure by Trump.)  Edward Jenner invented the small pox vaccine in 1796. Before this a method called variolation was used. Pieces of fabric or threads moistened with a sick person's small pox postules were pulled through incisions in a person's arm. This was effective until Edward Jenner invented the vaccine itself for mass vaccination efforts. Tom Parfitt of The Times writes about how Catherine Empress of Russia invited Dr Dimsdale from Britain to give her the inoculation against smallpox. She became the first person to be inoculated in Russia and had the courage to do so after this method had been tried and successfully tested in Britain. Catherine writes in this letter to Count Rumyantsev that she had only mild discomfort. She then championed smallpox inoculation for the Russian people and says "it does not call for huge expenditure." Today the Russian government is making its best efforts to vaccinate the Russian people, yet only 38% are fully vaccinated. The example of a medical revolution 200 years ago and how it was handled in Europe is new inspiration for renewed efforts. ...
