Pope Francis plans a visit to the Philippines and Sri Lanka in Jan. 2015 This is an effort to support the Catholic Church in countries experiencing rapid population growth and change. The Philippines has 75 million Catholics, about the same number as in the U.S., and compared to 46 million in Italy. Mexico has 96 million Catholics, and Brazil 126 million Catholics, Sri Lanka 1 million, according to the Pew Research Center figures for 2010.

Sempra Infrastructure is to build a new LNG terminal on the Gulf Coast in the US in early 2023. The first phase of the $10.5 billion Port Arthur LNG project in South Texas is underway. The project will add 13.5 million metric tons of LNG to world gas supplies and is the largest project for LNG approved in 2022. Germany's RWE, Polish and British companies have signed supply agreements with Sempra.

Huseyn Gulerce, who is close to Gulen, says Gulen is critical of Turkey's drifting away from seeking membership of the European Union and not conducting democratic changes. Gulen and Erdogan worked together to bring the AKP to power in elections and reduce the military's influence in politics and government. Gulen left Turkey in 1999 after being accused of trying to turn Turkey into a Islamic state and has settled in Pennsylvania, U.S.. Erdogan is a one time Mayor of Istanbul, and critics say the construction industry business interests and Erdogan have ignored zoning laws to move ahead with haphazard development of the city pushing out old time residents. This was also a complaint of protesters in the summer 2013 protests in Taksim Square, Istanbul....

Conventional monetary policy is ineffective in a liquidity trap. At that point short term interest rates are at zero, and conventional monetary policy is ineffective at this zero bound. Unconventional policies such as buying long term Treasury bonds by the Federal Reserve may be adopted, but their effectiveness has not been proven. This is something the Fed is attempting to do in the U.S. after the 2008 financial crisis. This was tried in Japan in a deflationary situation and the results did not show conclusively that it works, because Japan remained at a borderline deflationary situation for years while this policy was implemented by the Bank of Japan. The $600 billion bond buying program of the U.S. Fed in late 2010, known as QE II, was implemented to reduce the chance of deflation taking hold and to stimulate growth. Krugman and others argue for the need of fiscal policy and government spending to step in to support the unconventional monetary policy. This becomes more difficult to do with the increasing budget deficit the U.S. is facing in 2011....

The U.S. Commerce Department announced in March 2012 that it would impose tariffs ranging from 2.9% to 4.73% on solar panels imported from China. China has about 47% of the U.S. market for solar panels- with Suntech at 17%, Yingli at 11%, and Trina at 10%. U.S. based companies have 29%, and other including EU countries 24%. The imports of solar panels from China were $2.65 billion in 2011. In the last 4 years Chinese lower priced products have reduced the cost of panels by two thirds. What this does is send a signal to encourage companies to manufacture in the U.S., and show that the U.S. government was taking action against illegal subsidies by China without disrupting the availability of lower cost imports.

Amtrak Biden says is an essential part of the fight to tackle climate change. Rail has 83% less greenhouse emissions than automobiles, and 73% less than plane air travel. It also has the potential to create half a million good jobs. President Biden was known as "Amtrak Joe" because he used Amtrak for decades as America's Senator from Delaware. In this video president Biden speaks at the 50th anniversary of Amtrak in Philadelphia. He says one of the conductors on his daily route estimated Biden has done 1.5 million miles on Amtrak compared to 1.1 million miles on Air Force One. Biden says he has traveled on Amtrak for as long as Amtrak has been in existence- for close to 50 years.

Matteo Renzi forms his own party as a breakaway party from the centre left Democratic Party. Renzi helped arrange the agreement to form a centre left government with the Five Star party. Following this effort he sets up his own party. Renzi says he wants his party to appeal more to the centre right on some issues to cut into the support going to Mr. Salvini of the Northern League. The devaluation of the Argentine peso from 9.8 to the dollar to 13 to the dollar in Dec. 2015 by president Macri is leading to higher inflation hurting the working class. The cutting of export taxes is helping farmers. Removing most currency controls is designed to help increase foreign investment by letting foreign companies freely repatriate profits. Also expected to be removed are bureaucratic procedures that limit imports of new equipment for manufacturers. Middle class voters see the moves helping the economy in the long run with new foreign investment and changing the outlook for investment. A former central bank president Mario Blejer points out that after 12 years of the previous Kirchner administration Argentina needs investment- by improving the outlook for investment and removing import controls the government plans to stimulate investment to lead to economic growth. Inflation is up 25% and Macri is keeping Mrs. Kirchner's price control programs in place to prevent a surge in inflation beyond the impact of the devaluation. ...
