Because the terminal hangups have been costly for British Airways leading to a shrinking of about 20% of its flight network, as it concentrated more on upscale customers, and lost passengers to more efficient airlines., ithe cost will likely be paid off quickly for BA. Demand. is so high at Heathrow that a pair of takeoff and landing spots can cost as much as $50 million and would be going up as Star Alliance and Skyteam member airlines move ito BA's old facilities. Considering the losses from th inefficient setup at the old terminal BA's estimate that T5 savings would cover its cost of 330 million pounds ($660 million) to equip the new building in in the next 10 years may even be understated. Of this 62 million pounds was spent on the new lounges. BA leases the T5 Terminal from Heathrow's BAA owned by Spain's Ferrovial SA, which spent $4.3 billion to build T5. ...

A review of the Volcker Rule for bank regulation in its final form by the WSJ in Dec. 2013 shows it leaves out language permitting portfolio hedging. Banks will not be allowed to use portfolio hedging creating new risks. Regulators wrote in the rule that hedges are not to "give rise .. to any significant new or additional risk that is not itself hedged contemporaneously." The Volcker Rule in its final form was influenced by regulators awareness of the J.P. Morgan Chase bank's huge losses from portfolio hedging in the Whale case. Senators Merkley and Levin in the U.S. Congress wrote to regulators saying a loophole in the Volcker Rule allowing portfolio hedging would lead to a repeat of the "London Whale."

Ted Cruz, US Senator from Texas makes a pitch for $1000 accounts for every newborn American child set up by the American government to which parents and relatives can contribute $5000 a year, invested in accounts based on S&P 500 index growth, which would create enough money by the age of 18 to create citizens with a share of the wealth in society. It would create $170,000 by the age of 18 for each child 18 years from now when invested at a historical average of 7% in mutual funds that are based on the S&P 500. It would give them a sense of participation in society that the current system fails to do when it puts most of the advantages on one side which is higher educated and with higher income parents vs the other side of less educated and lower income parents with additional burdens from social ills.

Sluggish sales of GM cars in mature markets like Germany and in markets with exacerbated credit crunch like Spain lead to decliing sales for GM's Opel brand in Western Europe. GM announced that sales in western Europe declined by 11% during the first three quarters of the year. The Opel brand is the higher margin brand for GM and is prominent in western Europe. Its Chevy brand is prominent in Eastern Europe and these sales increased by 43%. In Russia the mood is uncertain as September sales for Chevy declined by 2% and Ford's sales slipped 13%. Over 1 million people turn out across France in protests against pension reform that takes the retirement age from 62 to 64 years. Women feel more discriminated against in this reform. The prevalent age discrimination bias in France makes it harder to find jobs after 50 years, even harder after 60 years. There is a perception that the reform is not the first priority so soon after a pandemic with its after effects, and that other changes including age discrimination and the way it affects women need to be tackled before pension reform. The government lacks an overall majority, the eight unions are united in protests and possible strikes, creating a situation in which French president Macron needs to rethink his whole approach on addressing pension reform- when tacking the cost of living crisis and climate change, energy transition, are other priorities that need more attention at this time.

The US may just move on to other priorities if both Russia and Ukraine cannot come to terms on a ceasefire, says Marco Rubio, US Secretary of State. The crux of the problem from the beginning were eastern regions of Ukraine that are more Russian in culture than western Ukraine. On the Russian side it was a loss of respect from the capitalist states US, UK and Western Europe compared to its historical importance in Europe, as everything was measured in GDP terms. The last straw was NATO and Ukraine with its Russian connected history joining it. By drawing eastern Ukraine into its orbit Russia was responding to actions by US and the EU support for Kiev, ignoring Russian perspectives. On the Ukrainian side the issue came down to Ukraine being able to decide its own future. Because of corruption and mismanagement, poor governance what could have happened with a clean governance and efficient growth oriented leadership working with Russia and the EU never happened. The result was veering from a pro-Russian to a anti-Russian government following the Maidan protests in Kiev in 2013. Enter China by 2019 with support of US companies shifting almost the entire US industrial base to China. Putin was handed a rare opportunity to act with China's tacit support to push back the US and EU and their defense arm NATO. He decided to take it thinking this would end quickly with Ukraine capitulating. The loss of hundreds of thousands of young Russian youth in the land war led to Russia getting entrenched into this war. As has happened before Russia with it's greater population and resources has prevailed in Eastern Europe over centuries of warfare. This is the situation in 2025 when DJT seeks to end the war and bring peace to Ukraine. ...

In his foreign policy address following the northeast state primaries Donald Trump outlines a policy with less foreign engagement in trouble spots, and greater reliance on partners in Europe and Asia contributing to joint defense. It also includes building up the military and nuclear arsenal. It criticizes the Bush administration for intervention in Iraq that benefitted Iran, and the Obama administration for policies that led to the rise of Islamic State. Because Trump is not for supporting foreign engagements in trouble spots the difference in Trump's policies is not announcing or signalling in advance what U.S. response would be, instead keeping it unpredictable. It is not clear how much this would work given that any president would inherit the situation before him, and also the complexity of the situation would not change, such as the need to have Iranian cooperation and Saudi cooperation to tackle Islamic State. The Bush administration started with a similiar intention to focus on domestic policy, till the 9/11 surprise attack steered it away towards nationbuilding overseas. The pendulum swung in the latter years of the Bush adminstration to the Iraq intervention, Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo, followed by a swing in the other direction to allowing Libya and Syria disntegrate leading to millions of refugees. Complexity, surprises, and swings of popular opinion, are unlikely to go away, even as caution is exercized and military capabilities enhanced....

The American Institute in Taipei, Taiwan, acts as the U.S. embassy in Taiwan. It is about half the size of the embassy in Beijing- with 450 diplomats and is set on a hillside in Taipei over 16 acres. The $250 million complex was planned during the Bush administration and built during the Obama administration. The U.S. withdrew diplomatic recognition of Taiwan as representing China in 1978 in an effort to counter the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Researchers at MIT, Peking University, Tsinghua University, and Hebrew University, have released a report on the dangerous effects of air pollution from the dependence on coal for energy in China. The report shows that areas in northern China north of the Huai River in central China -where coal use is much higher with government support than the area south of the river- have about 5 years lower life expectancy than areas south of the river.
