The FDIC had $19 billion in its fund that insures consumer's deposits at the end of 2008. A bill in Congress by Christopher Dodd, the Senate Banking Committee chairman, gives the FDIC access to $500 billion till the end of 2010 if the Fed, the President and Treasury secretary support that, and $100 billion without that approval. The FDIC proposed raising the fees banks pay into the deposit insurance fund to buildup the fund, that has been depleted by bank bailouts like the one at IndyMac which cost $10 billion. But banks protested because it comes at a time when bank's are already in a bad condition. Under a 1991 law the FDIC can borrow from the Treasury amaximum of $30 billion. The access to $500 billion is meant to let the FDIC act as another source of funds to address systemic risks that arise in the future, in addition to the $700 billion already approved by Congress for that purpose. In an interview Sheila Bair, head of the FDIC, said that a change in the law would "ease the mechanics of how seamlessly we can access our lines of" funding. This story describes the thinking of people in the Biden circle who thought this was a bad idea.  This includes Hunter Biden's partner in the investment firm, a stepson of John Kerry, Secretary of State in the Obama administration, and other advisers of the Bidens. It has raised questions about why steps were not taken to prevent the perceived conflict of interest.  As a result of this Ukraine, a country at war with Russia and having elected a new president outside the conventional politics, is now at the centre of the impeachment inquiry. U.S. healthcare spending of about $3 trillion comes with poor results. The cost per person is about three times that of countries such as France, Britain, yet the results show U.S. doing extremely poorly. The author points out that less spending on healthcare and more on social services in areas such as education, nutrition, housing and other services would improve the outcomes and results. It is this missing factor that is helping other countries in Europe, Japan and China achieve better outcomes and returns per dollar spent.  Social spending can affect such things as nutrition, exercize levels, lifestyles, housing and result in dramatic improvements in obesity levels for instance, or inflammation levels in the population that play a role in many diseases. The idea is prevention. This is not happening because higher health dollar spending has lobbies to support it. Social spending also is a dollar expense that shows up immediately whereas results are spread out into the future as a longer term benefit with healthier populations that need to consume less healthcare and treatment. Elizabeth Bradley, president of Vassar College is an expert on this subject. She says social services spending gives more bang for buck  in health outcomes.  The point is relevant also for countries in South Asia and Africa that have taken some on some aspects of the U.S. health system resulting in health care spending that does not deliver the most for the dollar spent, and ignores the critical role of prevention.  The solution lies in moving these health care dollars out of the health care spending and into education for health outcomes, lifestyles, exercize habits education, and into social services that enable prevention and better health. ...

Over the years since Harry Truman's presidency the Republican party was able to peel off less educated working class white voters from the Democratic party on the basis of religion, race, gender and traditional attitudes to culture. Could this have gone too far and will the Democratic Party in the U.S. fight to recover support from its traditional base of common people, just as the Labour Party in Britain under Jeremy Corbyn sees itself as defending working class and common people's aspirations. Biden's future depends on how much he can rally the party back to its roots with his  Harry Truman like style and fighting spirit. Few American presidents in the modern period could match the courage, simplicity, openness and tenacity of Harry Truman, which is why he was able to come from behind and win in 1948 elections after the death of president Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1945. ...

For it to be real it becomes important to not self-censor. Other people may have the same experience but it is not talked about much, that itself may add to its newness and claim to being something fresh, and it may take some courage overcoming fear of ridicule to tell the story. Telling stories also can work to bring an organization or different departments work better around shared perceptions, values and goals. In this sense stories and narrative are about everyday life and anywhere we are trying to achieve something worthwhile. ...

OPEC and Russian oil producers are planning to increase oil production by 400,000 barrels a day for each month through 2022. Demand is increasing with economic recovery and this will lead to higher oil prices. Oil prices are now $80 a barrel in October 2021. Shortages of natural gas and high prices are leading power generation companies to use oil in place of natural gas. This will increase demand for oil by 500,000 barrels a day. Oil export revenue was cut in half to $119 billion for Saudi Arabia in 2020 and Saudis want to see higher prices to make up for lost revenue. In recent years shale oil producers in the US quickly responded to higher prices of oil and increased production.
