SPD was seeing poll numbers of as low as 15% in the spring of 2021, just months before the election. Scholz believed in his party's ideas for the renewal of Germany, remained undeterred even after losing an election to lead the SPD to Esken and Walter-Borjans in 2019, when Esken and Walter-Borjans reinforced the idea that the SPD should stand for workers and families, what it always stood for. Scholz was put forward as candidate by Esken and Walter-Borjans in 2021 with conviction. By Spring 2021 it was clear that Scholz had achieved the impossible, getting the conservative Merkel and the CDU, with instincts against borrowing in all situations, to agree to a huge aid package for Germany to fight the pandemic, and a huge aid package for the European Union to fight the pandemic.  That Scholz remained undeterred in his campaign by low poll numbers and went on campaigning on the basis of convictions about what is right for Germans and Germany, comes from deeper convictions from his days growing up in the Hamburg youth wing of Social Democrats in the years following SPD's Wily Brandt and the post war recovery. Germany's most remembered leader after Adenauer, Willy Brandt was leader of the SPD Social Democrats from 1964 to 1987, and chancellor 1969-74. Both Adenauer and Brandt are respected some 50 years later in the world and in Germany. That Germany is going back to this tradition of leadership after the period of the Merkel years when Germany was held back, brings new hope to Europe and the world. In allying with the Greens under a younger generation leaders Scholz saw the promise of an opportunity to tackle problems of climate change and investment in infrastructure together. Both parties see borrowing as essential to invest big in the future. Scholz message to Germans, Europeans and the world is - "Big jobs, but our country is capable of doing them." A message sent out from the US by president Biden, and from Asia by the Indian prime minister. ...

Yet the government pays $2 for every park reservation made on that site to Booz Allen, a private company.

President Macron shows flexibility on pension age being raised from 62 to 64 after two weeks of crippling transport strikes in Paris and on national railways. Some aspects of the pensions reform consolidating 42 different pension schemes into one national pension is broadly supported by the public and the CDFT union. The raising of the pension age for transport employees who often retire in their fifties is also broadly supported. The strikes by the CGT union have about 60% support and Mr. Macron's approval ratings have dropped to 33%, leading to Mr. Macron giving ground.

China's prime minister Li Keqiang leads the task force tackling the coronavirus outbreak. He visits the city of Wuhan to calm anxiety and frustration about the outbreak. The lunar new year holiday in China which starts now is being extended to Feb 2.  Shanghai and Beijing city officials are advising returning workers not to return till February 9. The rural areas are a weak part of the link in the effort to stop the outbreak. Millions of workers return to cities after visiting homes in rural areas during this holiday period.

Germany's retail association HDE says about 50,000 shops will be lost in non food sector. There are about 300,000 shops in Germany. These shops have lost 30 billion euros already in lost sales, and with traffic low are losing about 1 billion euros a day, even after being allowed to open. Many shops will be missing when one walks around cities in Germany. 

A big problem is the cost of rent which is not being deferred in the crisis. When rent is deferred corporate landlords charge 5% to 9% interest.

P&G also makes diapers and Gillette razors. The company is making more high end products to boost sales. He is seen as the best choice for Italy's recovery with financial help from EU funds. With 27% of votes counted over half or 57% of Berliners voted for nationalization of private developer housing units, only 39% voted no. Berliners cast more votes than they ever have. China has emerged as the largest buyer of Iranian oil, in the face of sanctions by the Trump administration to cut Iranian oil exports. China has replaced French company Total for the Pars oil field. It is investing heavily in Iranian oil industry. Iran has offered a 12% discount for China's oil supply needs. China has promised to invest $280 billion in the Iranian oil industry and is seeking to pull Iran into its Belt and Road Initiative. India also seeks to continue its oil trading relationship with Iran, in the face of U.S. sanctions.

A new French law will ban cellphone use for students age 3 to 15, from preschool to ninth grade, on school grounds. The law aims to reduce distraction so that children can read a book or a play outside during recreation. One parent says children lack the maturity for smartphone use.

Mike Flynn, who briefly held the position of National Security Adviser before resigning, tells the FBI and Congressional officials that he is willing to be interviewed if he is given immunity for prosecution. Flynn, a former general, resigned after accepting that he misled White House officials about the phone conversations with the Russian ambassador. Also an issue and seen as improper is that Flynn was paid for speeches by Russia's state sponsored network RT just before becoming an adviser to the Trump campaign, according to documents given to a congressional oversight committee.

In this article in the WP Hohmann points out a rule mentioned by Secretary Powell and Armitage, that "you brake it, you own it," a kind of Pottery Barn rule. When you have the majorities in both houses of Congress and the White House, then there is nobody to blame if you cannot produce results or things don't improve. This happened to Obama, Pelosi and Reid after 2008 when they lost both houses of Congress in the 2010 midterms. Now the Trump Republicans with Ryan and McConnell face the same situation.

The 2019 election recorded the lowest turnout in Nigeria's history. Germany has performed poorly in banking by copying practices of American banks. Deutsche Bank is a notable example. After years of government scrutiny and investigations into faulty practices, efforts to merge it with other German bank by the government, and losses plus penalties, legal liabilities, the bank's management is now retrenching by cutting down the size of the bank. Tens of thousands of jobs will be cut and the bank returning to a more traditional role of what a bank should be before the faulty practices and mismanagement of the bank resulted in this mess.
