The average of vehicles on the road reached a record of 11.1 years in 2011, according to R.L. Polk research company. Using the average of 15,000 miles driven a year used by the EPA for cost calculation on fuel economy labels, shows that car are being driven for much longer nowadays, over 150,000 miles. In the 1960's and 1970's the average was closer to 100,000 miles. Because of the EPA mandated fuel emissions standards and technological advances the newer cars in 2012 have better life than the older cars in the 1970's. Toyota's, Honda's and Volvo's frequently get 150,000 or 200,000 miles and still have some usage left for example. In addition the tighter fuel efficiency standards of the Obama administration and technological advances now underway are likely to bring a new generation of cars that provide another level of improved performance.

The Obama administration is pushing for new U.S. fuel efficiency standards of 56.2 mpg by 2025. In May 2009 President Obama announced domestic car and light truck fuel efficiency standards of 35 mpg by 2016. Europe is expected to reach fuel efficiency of 60 mpg by 2020. This would still leave Europe considerably ahead of the U.S. in fuel efficiency for automobiles, but the gap would be much smaller. For the last several decades the U.S. has fallen sadly behind Europe and Japan in fuel efficiency. The perception of poor fuel efficiency hurt the automakers badly during periods of high fuel prices and when buyers were facing difficult economic choices. The automakers are beginning to grasp this fact. Mark Reuss, president of General Motors, commented that- "it's very challenging, but its upto us engineers to provide high value to the customer and support the environment." This is an issue that has serious national and global implications as it affects the future prices and demand for oil, emissions, and future economic growth. It would also bring the U.S. in line with Europe and Japan when it comes to fuel efficiency of automobiles. ...

Qatar's sovereign wealth fund supports PSG Paris and Qatar Airways supports Bayern Munich. Barcelona is one of the richest clubs along with PSG but says this report it has wasted a lot of money about $950 million getting players that it later deemed not needed, 30 players for that amount since 2014.This includes Coutinho who scored 2 of the 8 goals of Bayern in the 8-2 Bayern win over Barcelona. Bayern also played with Thiago Alcantara a player released by Barcelona. All the time Barcelona was looking at players to support Messi and making bad decisions. It released Neymar to PSG for $260 million even though it had second thoughts about the merits of that decision, just because of the money. For what you get for the money Bayern got key players for under $120 million to beat Lyon. Manchester city spent $600 million by contrast to put together its team. For Bayern its home grown talent comes from Thomas Muller and Alaba. Lewandowski and Goretzka were signed up. The best talent comes from youngsters Serge Gnabry of France and Alphonso Davies of Canada, for a combined $21 million. PSG also has broken the bank in signings but it has cooled down since and is calmer now. It signed Mbappe for $160 million, a critical piece of the plan for PSG. PSG coach Tuchel brought back Chuopo Moting for free and he was the hero for the win over Atalanta in the closing minutes. Simply an act of faith in his players by Tuchel from old times when Tuchel coached the youth leagues, which he loved doing.  Bayern chairman Rummenigge says "we'll try to save money." Making the best use of money starting with homegrown talent and young promising players is a winning game. At key points in the game with Barcelona, Davies and Coutinho showed the value of this approach. ...

Google Inc. has made an agreement to acquire Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. for $12.5 billion in cash. This deal puts Google in direct competition with Apple Inc., RIM, and Nokia. Google is taking on new risks with this acquisition. It is known as a software company, and the acquisition puts it in an area with which it has little experience- manufacturing and managing sales of devices working with retailers. It also risks making partners- such as Samsung, HTC Corp., Sony Ericsson, and LG Electronics that make mobile phones- into rivals. Forrester Research points out that this could lead to these companies hedging their bets and also making mobile phones that use the Microsoft operating system. Google considered a similiar plan for entry into the PC market after it developed the Chrome operating system but decided against it, opting instead to work with PC manufacturers Acer Inc and Samsung. The deal brings with it a large number of patents Motorola holds in mobile technology.

The PM of India is interviewed by Smitha Prakash of ANI before the April 2024 federal elections.  PM Modi describes his effort to bring transparency and remove the use of "black money" in elections and politics. He sees this use of "black money" as a constant danger to India's democratic process and to the development of the country. Electoral bonds was one idea he tried to do this, says Modi. About Enforcement Directorate on illicit activities PM Modi says it was the opposition Congress party that made the laws to prevent corruption of the democratic process yet never enforced the laws, in large part merely left them on the books. About the fears surrounding his party and the PM coming in for a third successive term Modi says there is no need to fear as he has devoted his life to the development aspirations of the young people of the country regardless of color, caste religion or region. He said the striking difference between him and the ranks of opposition parties in Maharashtra, Bihar, UP, Tamilnadu and West Bengal was the "parivar vadi" or dynastic spirit of the leaders who followed age old practices of promoting family members to lead, such being the case in the INC after Nehru for several generations, depriving the country of better leaders and stifling democratic processes. He did not say this yet Indians of all ages remember the leadership of Lal Bahadur Shastri who succeeded Nehru in 1964, his championing of farmers with the slogan Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan. Like JFK in the US his life was cut short  before he could put his mark on the period after 1964. Shastri was Parliamentary Secretary in the first Indian government in 1946 and served in every capacity for India at the state level in Uttar Pradesh India's heartland around the Ganges river, and at the federal level till 1966. During this interview PM Modi was asked about Tamilnadu and southern states, a north-south divide, Modi does not see India in "tukde tukde," piece and piece-even as Chief Minister of Gujarat he said he aspired to progress of India and Gujarat's progress and modernization as part of this Republic India.  ...

EU's Leyen and Costa at India's Republic Day Parade 2026 with PM Modi. European Union's Leyen said on her visit to India with Da Costa- "We are on the cusp of a historic trade Agreement indeed some call it the mother of all deals one that would create a market of two billion people." "A free trade agreement between the EU and India would be the largest deal of this kind anywhere in the world. I am well aware it will not be easy. But I also know that timing and determination counts, and that this partnership comes at the right moment for both of us." Leyen concluded that this was a moment that seemed so opportunity filled for both regions. "In troubled times great opportunities come. And I believe 2025 is a historic window of opportunity to build an indivisible partnership between Europe and India. Our interests align. Our commitment is iron-clad. And if it can be done anywhere, it can be done here. Because as Romain Rolland – the French writer and great admirer of India said: “If there is one place on the face of earth where all the dreams of living men have found a home from the very earliest days when man began the dream of existence, it is India.”  "And today we are one step closer to making our common dream a reality. Thank you and long live our friendship." ...

What we need now is a multi-annual program tht goes far beyond the program that we discussed ony 10 days ago." Winkler says the Autonomy acquisition could be a useful step in executing H-P CEO Apotheker's new strategy to focus on higher margin businesses, but it comes at an expensive price tag. H-P paid ten times expected revenue for Autonomy, or 20 times earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. This is too much cash considering that the share price of H-P has dropped by half since February 2011.

The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute said the average fuel economy of all new passenger vehicles purchased in January 2012 was 23 miles per gallon, up 0.8 or 4% from December 2011. This includes cars, light trucks, minivans, and SUV's. Professors Sivak and Schoettle of the Institute also released a U.S. Eco-Driving Index, or EDI, which estimates average monthly emissions of individual U.S. drivers for Nov. 2011 at 0.86- this is down 14% from October 2007. The need to reduce reliance on imported oil for the U.S., Europe, China and India, the high price of oil, and the need to reduce automobile emissions to improve air quality, make improvements in average fuel economy and emissions per driver absolutely critical.
