Dar es Salaam has population 6 million and has grown eightfold since 1980. Four of five people live on the sprawling fringes in informal settlements that take a commute of over 2 hours to city centre. Dar es Salaam has chosen a bus system with dedicated lanes and areas instead of a metro which is costlier to build. The city has only four arterial roads with 2 lanes each way. Most of the growth is on the periphery and unplanned. The Dart System now in place separates the bus lanes from other traffic to reduce stoppages. The average journey from the centre to the terminus at Kimara is now down from 2 hours each way to 45 minutes.saving 50 hours each week for the average bus passenger.

The title says it all. The Jobs bank the United Autoworkers trade union in the US setup in GM in 1984 threatened American automaker GM's very survival in 2006. It put workers who were not needed at GM in a jobs bank. It basically meant the idled workers -many of them close to retirement -would stay there till they retired doing nothing collecting full salary. As Mohandas Gandhi had done for India in Hind Swaraj in 1910, the American labor movement needs to look at itself in the mirror if labor is to find its way into a world of dignity and fairness in wages that Mr.Biden truly seeks for American workers.   It was setup when GM had 45% of the US market and 415,000 workers. By 2006 113,000 workers were not needed with GM having lost marketshare to Japanese makers and the Jobs bank was costing GM about $10 million a week, half a billion a year threatening its survival. The Labor movement and the UAW union did nothing to fight its own membership and set it on the right course in union with management, putting at risk the very foundation that labor had put in place since Wilson, FDR and Truman for  fairness in wages and working conditions. Jeremy Peters tells the story in the NYT. That it was recent as 2006 and shows how much had gone wrong with the labor movement and the failure of its leaders to do the right thing. The Jobs Bank says NYT was intended to prevent manufacturers from shifting manufacturing overseas, instead it did just that by undermining confidence in unions and the American labor movement, and in American workers. Two crippling wars initiated by Republicans Bush and continued by Democrat Obama, disinvestment in American manufacturing, companies like Apple shifting their entire manufacturing through outshoring to Taiwan and China, the 2009 crisis from deregulation of American banks, led to the loss of not one, but two decades for America. In today's news a modest $2 in minimum wage increase from $15 to $17 over 3 years is all that New York governor Kathy Hochul could get- even though Assembly Democrats were asking for more- to give American workers and families a fair wage to meet the cost of living crisis.  ...

Ross Sorkin says the information put out in Groupon's IPO filing by the investment banks and other information raises warning signs. Groupon has $225 million in the bank, lost $102 million in the 3rd quarter 2011 on revenue of $878 million. The company has current liabilities of $681 million and only $376 million in assets. It owes vendors $392 millon as part of the current liabilities. Groupon spent $432 million in the first 6 months of 2011 on marketing. Other information shows Eric Lefkovsky, Groupon's chairman, sold a dotcom company in 1999 which went into bankruptcy a year later. And of the $950 million in a pre-IPO round in January 2011, Groupon paid out $810 million to investors and employees. Of this Mr. Lefkovsky and his wife were given $319 million. Goldman Sachs is the lead underwriter behind Groupon's IPO offering. Because of the huge fees involved investment banks and accounting firms were willing to come up with inflated valuations and a questionable metric called Adjusted Consolidated Segment Operating Income, that showed operating income excluding major marketing and acquisition related costs....

Hanif describes the activist nature of Pakistan's judiciary. This is part of a tradition in Pakistan where the courts have played a role to check executive power in the form of military in the government or political parties in government affected by corruption in the system. Earlier in the last decade the courts acted as a check on the power of Gen. Musharraf. It is now acting as a check on the Sharif government, including a decision removing Sharif as head of the government and the ruling political party. This opinion reflects skepticism about this role. In Pakistan's system the way it has evolved the military, the party elected to government in free elections, and the judiciary, each act as a check on the other, particularly now that Pakistan has experienced for the first time a peaceful transition of power between opposition parties. North Korea's trade with China has plunged 75% in 2020 and the economy has suffered the worst in a generation. Trade with China withered to $1.7 million in October for a 99% drop. A weak health system meant North Korea had no choice but to shut down completely. It locked off some provinces and shut down foreign tourism. Prices of food staples like sugar have quadrupled.

Emmanuel Macron says he is listening to voters and will change the pension reform to meet voter concerns. The age will go from 62 to 64 instead of 65, it will be implemented gradually till 2030, and try to build a consensus, and be delayed for now. He said "I have heard the message from those who voted for the extremes including Ms. Le Pen." 

Mr. Macron pushed through pension reform in 2020 without a parliamentary vote in the face of street protests and it was not implemented because of the pandemic.

Much of Google's efforts in the last five years have gone into preserving its monopoly of the search business without adding much through innovation and new ideas. If there is a hot summer the situation for electricity supplies in Japan could get a lot worse. After the shutdown of reactors at the Fukushima nuclear plant, Japan is coping with rolling blackouts, and lower demand from industry, but a hot summer could change things. If there is a hot summer it is estimated that Japan will have enough electricity supplies to meet only three fourth of the demand of the region around Tokyo. Tokyo Electric Company has provided detailed information of the status of all its nuclear plants, including ones undergoing maintenance.
