Muhammad Azhar Ali, factory manager for National Foods plant near Karanchi, Pakistan, describes what it is like running a manufacturing operation in Pakistan. National Foods is the largest manufacturer of pickles and other spice products in Pakistan. A big problem is the lack of security and terrorism. This remains a constant cause of anxiety for business people in Pakistan. Its like being in a war zone says the National Foods chairman Abdul Majeed. Another major problem is lack of reliable electricity supplies. Supply of electricity is only one third of national demand in Pakistan. Larger companies such as Lucky Cement generate their own electricity, with Lucky Cement producing 150 megawatts from its plants. Smaller companies like National Foods rely on diesel generators. To conserve electricity many factory, floor office and bathroom lights are turned off. For workers the lack of electric supplies and high inflation affect lives in many ways. National Foods has a weighing department and assesses workers picked up from many parts of Karanchi to see if they are fit for work or are unduly stressed from poor living conditions. This is a side of Pakistani life that is rarely touched on-the daily lives of workers and managers. Ali works harder than other production managers in other countries because of the power shortages and lack of security. He would like to devote time to increase productivity and be more like other production managers. The war with the Taliban has cost Pakistan $68 billion in destroyed infrastructure, security costs, lost foreign investment according to one estimate. ...

To ensure a recovery in profits in 2010-2011, Ford's strategy was to sell the Focus and Fiesta small cars at a higher price point even if this meant lower sales. Profit margins for the North American region were above 10%, and Ford's president of the Americas, Mark Fields, says this will be maintained for 2012. In the first 3 quarters of 2011, Ford's profits were $6.6 billion. Analysts for Edmunds.com say Ford has shied away from offering large discounts, subsidizing leases and other incentives, and tried to maintain higher margins. The average price for the Focus of $20,589 being higher than average prices of rivals except for the Jetta from VW, according to Edmunds. The average price of the Fiesta is higher than rivals except for the Honda Fit, according to this information. Focus sales increased by 2% in 2011 over 2010, even as compact car sales went up by 8.7%, according to Autodata. Sales of the Fiesta actually fell by 30% in December 2011 compared to the prior year. The result of this strategy is that inventories of small cars are up significantly for Ford. By 2011 years end Ford had on dealer lots inventory of Focus cars at 92 days current sales, and Fiesta cars at 126 days. Normal inventory is considered less than 60 days supply. By comparison GM had a 68 day supply for the Cruze, and a 61 day supply for the Chevy Sonic. The challenge for Ford is to hold on to its pricing strategy, which means reducing production to work off the extra inventory....

Corner Office will cover leadership and Management. This is a wide ranging interview with Brenneman sharing not only his philosophy on work and business, but also his philosophy of life. He describes his approach to a company based on asking what are the two or three most important things you do, levers that you pull, that will make a difference in this company. It should all fit in one page. If its not simple and easy to tell a colleague, then its not right or its too complicated with buzzwords. Another approach is ask what are the 2 or 3 things you don't do which are bleeding the the business. Can you put these things down on a mental page, just one page, just 2 or 3 things that stick out, you absolutely don't want to do. That helps you put down the plan of attack. Brenneman sees too many executives focussed on economic gains and not having a rounded life, a balance that helps them lead happy, productive lives. In his view the balanced person is better at work because he finds fulfillment from all aspects of life. What leaders consider important is a shadow that they cast on the whole organization, in Brenneman's view, making it very important that the leaders actions convey the right message that they care about people....

Osborn and Gauthier Villars describe how Russian president Putin and his former Dresden KGB associate Chemezov executed their strategy for Avtovaz to create a Russian state owned autombile industry in alliance with Renault. Troika Dialog and state banks put in hundreds of millions of dollars, and Renault put up $1 billion with more of it in cash up front, to get the necessary restructuring and financial setup to obtain state ownership and control of all of Avtovaz's assets. This had to be done because the company had descended into control by gangs and criminal elements by 2005 when Putin put Chemezov in charge with help of state police and prosecutors. And Putin conceded only 25% ownership to Renault as the Russians have gradually reasserted control of their companies and driven out gangs and elements that have grabbed assets in the lawless environment that prevailed with the collapse of communism. What is happening is that the state is then attracting capital and technology from foreign companies by selling them a stake at the best price possible. In the case of Avtovaz because of the highly deteriorated lawless situation, the state will use some of the Renault money to take financial ownership of Avtovaz in addition to loans from state banks. Putin says he has attracted $80 billion in foreign capital in 2007. During the Brezhnev years Fiat invested in Russian automobile factories which became part of Avtovaz. In 1993 it was privatized, but by 2005 it had fallen into Mafia type gangs hands and the state had only about 2% control of ownership. From this low level Avtovaz has recovered, and now is where it was before privatization, with the added infusion of technology and capital and part ownership by foreign companies interested in expanding in a fast growing Russian market. Note that its location is Southern Russia, and its employment base is huge employing 104,000 people. The company is now back on its feet and improving its prospects with newer models to replace the old Lada, of which 736,000 are turned out each year. With the help of Renault, Russians hope to create a large automobile industry of their own. Compared to 2004 when 24% of companies were state owned, now 40% are stateowned as the Putin strategy continues. By getting much better deals and selling off stakes at higher prices, keeping state control of the bulk of the assets, and seeing that capital and technology infusions occur as technology moves forward, this strategy is proving to be a winning proposition for Russia. For foreign companies the growing attractiveness of the Russian market, and the probability that even at the higher prices these assets might be worth much more in the future, makes it a win-win proposition. This is the direction Russia will increasingly take under the Putin-Medvedev administration. Note that Chemezov may take up Aviation industry reorganization next....

Jane Spencer interviews Lenovo CEO, Bill Amelio. Amelio throws light into how a company can best operate in China and reach out to a global market. Consider the way Amelio recruits Chinese talent working in the local language, and how he works with Chinese managers who tend to be more reticent on issues and opinion. Amelio is unique in his approach to hiring Chinese managers and building a bench with deep talent. He has abandoned what he calls the "colonial approach" of hiring with expat executives interviewing in English for managers in emerging markets. He says its a good idea to leave the English filter out to get more talent. Instead he has English language classes for the hired managers to help them improve language skills. Amelio talks about Lenovo's approach to the U.S. and other international markets as it competes with the likes of Acer and Dell. Amelio headed Dell's Asian operations prior to this position. Lenovo is testing ideas for giving low cost access at $100-$150 to people in India and China. The way this works is for Lenovo working with Intel and Microsoft to reduce the cost by 50%. For the bank to have half the ownership and the customer paying for the rest. Customers would buy cards for 10 hours of computing, and buy the computer back from the bank through regular use. Lenovo's strategy is to go after small and medium size businesses and consumers to increase market share in the U.S. and Europe. To do this it is using soccer star Ronaldinho and basketball stars to give Lenovo visibility as a brand. In other areas, Amelio has brought Dell managers to Lenovo to improve the supply chain management, an area Lenovo needed to improve....

The crisis of late 2008 and early 2009 in the global economy saw huge stimulus programs, resposible economic management, and rapid recovery by the end of 2009 in developing countries. China put in place a large stimulus program, and in most developing countries, India, Vietnam, Brazil and other countries efforts were made to strengthen the safety net for the poor and to introduce stimulus for creating jobs. India and Indonesis saw the return of ruling party governments and in Brazil Lula da Silva had favorability ratings above 60%. So contrary to earlier fears in late 2008 their was both asense of political stability and asense of confidence in the developing countries. Capital is flowing into these countries and the IIF says that net private capital inflows to developing countries will double in 2010 to $672 billion. Russia which saw capital outflows of $50 billion in the first 9 months saw $20 billon of capital inflows in the fourth quarter of 2009. Half of the 140 million laborers working in Chinese cities returned home in early 2009, a fifth stayed there and another fifth counld not find work when they returned to the cities. But as the stimulus in China kicked in, and infrastructure development surged, (see link to the rail infrastructure spending) by the middle of 2009 jobless ness among rural migrant workers went down to less than 3%. This shows in the Pew Global Attitudes Project wth more than 40% of respondents in India, China and Indonesia saying that they were satisfied with their lives, in China this was 87%. In France, Japan and Britain the share is below 30%. In America 49% of those in the Pew pollingfelt that America should mind its own business internationally, 30 points higher than in 1964. When asked "Are you better off in free markets?" the respondents share fell in 2009 in Germany by 4 points, in Spain by 10 points. Shares rose in India and China, and stayed flat in Brazil and Turkey, so there is no backlash against free markets in developing countries....

U.S. auto sales increased by 7.5% in October 2011. Chrysler sales were up 27% in October. Its Jeep vehicles had the best sales performance in 5 years. Jeep sales were up 25% and Ram pickup sales were up 21%. Ford Motor Company sales were up 6.2%, and GM sales were up 1.7%. Sales of Ford's F- series pickup trucks were up 7% and sales of Escape sport utility vehicles were up 30%. Lincoln sales declined 11%. For GM the Cruze small car and the Equinox crossover sales were up, while Buick sales were down 7% and Cadillac 12%. Because of limited vehicle supplies Honda and Toyota showed decline in sales by 1% and 7.9% respectively. The annualized seasonally adjusted selling rate in October was 13.26 million vehicles. Reasons given for the pickup in auto sales by analysts are that buyers had held off buying in 2009 and 2010 and are now back in the market as their vehicles show signs of aging. Hyundai sales were up 23%, VW's up 39.6% and Mercedes-Benz's sales up 28%.

Brazil's infrastructure needs include port and road facilities for its agricultural exports and mining industry. Road and rail transport networks for passengers are small considering Brazil's size. The rail network is smaller than that of France and only 12% of the one million mile road network is paved. Brazilian petroleum fund Petrosal will invest in infrastructure needs. Investments are being made to upgrade port facilities by Santos Brazil, and investment in toll roads by CCR, a private-highways company. The government is planning investments in infrastructure to prepare for the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016.

Nimsdal Purja leads a team of Nepalese climbers to the top of K2 the world's second largest mountain. Purja's equipment and supplies were blown away January 12 on the mountain. Yet the team put together a second effort  and successfully reached the top.

Purja first learned to climb at age 29. He is now at 38 years a climber with the unique achievement of climbing all the world's mountains 5 miles long. K2 was the toughest because unlike Mt. Everest it has no flat sections, a pyramid that goes straight up. Unlike Sherpa climbers Purja was born in the lowlands of Nepal, born in a Gurkha family and settled in Hampshire, England.

For Nepal this is a singular achievement as Tenzing aspired to climb K2 after making it to the top of Everest in 1953 with Edmund Hillary.

David Brooks of NYT povides this exceptional essay on a long neglected question. If so much of the politics today is about different communities that are alienated from each  other, what is it about these communities that makes this happen, and how did this come about? After decades of integrating communities and building the economy after the second world war through a strong middle class, what has happened now to see all that progress reverse itself. Rural America and the less educated voted in one way and the urban areas voted in the opposite way, one feeling neglected and the other becoming more segregated in cultural outlook, education, and work. Brooks cites a new book by Richard Reeves of the Brookings Institution called the "Dream Hoarders." The book shows two structural barriers that divide America. One is the residential zoning restrictions, housing and construction rules that keep the less educated away from the opportunities and schools in cities such as Portland, San Francisco and New York. The second structural barrier is the college admissions game that favors the parents and children of the better educated classes. The immigrant communities who come from families that are struggling hard to get into the middle class and upper class work hard to get an edge. As a result about 70 percent of the students in the top 200 competitive schools in America are from the top 25% in the income distribution.  Other barriers are formed by the extent of investment parents in one group put into their children, estimated at 300% by Brooks compared to a flat line for the other group. This accelerated investment leaves the other group far behind. Social barriers form to prevent the kind of interactions one would find normal in an open democratic society. Brooks say the cultural differences show up in the language and product selections, in food and other choices. Just take a typical Brooklyite and someone from western New York state. It is not the intent of one group to look upon this as a desired result. It is their indifference to what is happening that is alarming for a free, open and democratic society. It is their lack of understanding about the implications for life in a free, open, democratic society, of segregating themselves from the vast expanse of humanity around them. It is their lack of knowledge of the history of this continent built on the idea of education and opportunities for all from the time of Benjamin Franklin in Pennsylvania and the early settlers, the idea of out of many one- E Pluribus Unum. Yet out of this crisis something good can emerge if a way is found, and leadership is needed in the right direction with the right ideas, consistent with the ideals that guided the best leaders from its past. What resentment, alienation and wrong direction cannot do, courage, perseverance and right direction can do.     ...

Troops who served in Konar province near the Pakistan border saw some of the heaviest fighting in Afghanistan. Here they give their account of what they saw and why there is a big gap in what they saw and what military officers and President Obama are telling Americans. Fort Campbell is spread out over 100,000 acres on the Kentucky-Tennessee border. Tweny thousand troops from this base served in Afghanistan. Brigades of the 101st Airborne Division from Fort Campbell fought some of the toughest battles in the eastern part of Afghanistan even while the surge concentrated troops in the southern part near populated centers. What the troops remember is battles fought in remote valleys where troops came out of nowhere like "ghosts," in areas which were held only for a few months and abandoned with no idea what they had accomplished. This description also fits with the reality of the Taliban being both Pakistani and Afghan in the sense that the borders were defined by the British during colonial times, but the tribes of the Pashtun region are on both sides, in Pakistan and Afghanistan. To subdue the region would be to subdue the Pakistani side and the support they enjoy in large parts of Pakistan, with the large and mountainous terrain making movement difficult. Which is why these troops talk about "ghosts" turning up from nowhere and find the fighting to have lost meaning in terms of purposes it is supposed to accomplish and how this is to be done. The reality of the valleys and hills over a vast mountainous terrain of Afghanistan and Pakistan and the people and fighting there does not fit the speeches made by President Obama on Afghanistan, and say soldiers this gap is widening every day....

Throughout this crisis both had little sleep paulson some 4 hour and Bernanke leaving at midnight to catch some sleep and how the crisis kept going on and on, with one fire put out another remaining to be put out and finally after day after day on Diet coke or diet Dr. Pepper and little sleep Paulson agreed with Bernanke's opinion that "we've got to go to Congress." In fact based on his studies and research on the Great Depression and of the crisis in Japan in the nineties in the banking system there, Bernanke had given his conclusion early on about a year earlier that if there were significant decline in housing prices the government would have to step in with a large intervention. But in the end it happened all so suddenly with Paulson agreeing and both Paulson and Bernanke going upto the President and the President saying lets do it. So the meeting with Congressmen was arranged a few hours later after the inital meeting in Speaker Pelosi's office. Any reluctance to meet Congressmen who had considered any steps in this session unlikely having disappeared, and the stark nature of the crisis in the words of Senator Dodd, Chairman of the Banking Committee, became clear in the opening remarks of Paulson and Bernanke. Dodd told a news reporter that for a long time there was complete silence in the room and he does not recall a moment like this in 25 years in Congress and it being a scary story. By now it had become overwhelmingly obvious that something needed to be done in hours and days....

Inflation in countries like Turkey and Romania. In Turkey inflation reaches 9.2% in March and looking to be worsening. Both countries have high foreign debt and export prospects worsening so their situation is getting difficult. Turkey's interest rate is at 15.25% and the central Bank is not about to reduce rates because of inflation even as growth is flat. Complicating Turkey's problem even further the Turkish lira lost 30% of its value in May 2006 requiring higher interest rates to support the currency and aslo because a further weakening of currency would mean higher price for imports and higher inflation. The corporate sector in Turkey has been on a hard currency borrowing binge so devt servicing costs would rise with further weakening of the currency. meanwhile growth is sputtering in Turkey.

Toshiba bought Westinghouse 2 years ago for $5.4 billion. Westinghouse is only the nuclear power division, three units., one that services nuclear reactors, one that builds nuclear plants and one that provides fuel for nuclear reactors. Because of concerns for climate change and nuclear power looking more acceptable than dirty coal fired plants, sales at Engineering Services unit have tripled since 2003 as dozens of nuclear plants are being refurbished. Now the unit that builds plants is taking off while engineering services is flat in revenues. But the Engineering Services division is trying new things to help engineers do a better job and trying new things with senior managers actively tackling things in the way of growth. The push from Toshiba has helped kickstart the culture at Westinghouse.

This is why it is not true- It is about fentanyl flows that have led to 490,000 deaths over 12 years in the US and few in the US like to talk about it. Smoot Hawley had nothing to do with fentanyl, drugs trafficking and migrant trafficking that every nation not only has a right but a No.1 responsibility to its citizens to keep its neighborhoods and its children in neighborhoods safe. Smoot and Hawley were US Senators and US Congress was isolationist in mood. Their grasp of the world trading system was meager and they stepped in at a time when the world had economically not recovered from World War I, and the French against US General Pershing's advice had set the most punitive arrangement in Germany that crushed Germany after an armistice Pershing opposed that left the Kaiser's political structures intact. Tariffs is not DJT's idea. It is the solid experience of Deputy US Trade Representative, Robert Lighthizer under Reagan who conducted negotiations with the Japanese who stalled and stalled Lighthizer says, let negotiations drag on into endless nights, and Lighthizer and his team stood firm. The relentless Japanese relented and Lighthizer secured the agreements that ended this phase of trade relations in the 1980's. Lighthizer was Trade Representative in the DJT first term 2016-2020 and launched the negotiations with China. This is now 8 years since 2016 and 2016 itself was 35 years after Lighthizer negotiated with the Japanese. Today's US Trade Representative is Jamieson who was Deputy Trade Representative under Lighthizer in 2016. Each detail is carefully thought through to bring it to a fair conclusion in the interests of the world and the US. Information traveled slowly GM could not tell at any time how many cars were in inventory on its lots in 1920's. US lacked basic infrastructure for government that FDR and Labor Secretary added firt in New York in the 1930's and which was transferred to 50 states by 1940's. Today information is quickly at fingertips and consultation processes are built in between industry and government at all levels. A lot of information is carefully evaluated. USTR as DJT showed, the major study of USTR Office in the Rose Garden on April 2, 2025, has all trade barriers carefully analyzed in minute details for every country. And is working on this for 40 years. There isn't even a slightest  comparison between this and the Smoot Hawley crowd in the 1920's.  The goal not to beat anybody. Just to set the goal of a level playing field for world trade. That is the foundation of trade that is fair and respected, and is a win-win for all. WTO's basic foundation No. 1 principle is a level playing field. It is just that this was a kind of Marshall Plan for Asia of the US to let poor countries such as Japan war wrecked in 1950, and China colonial power wrecked by first Britain then Japan struggling and poor in 1990's, giving them some time to rebuild by ignoring unfair barriers to trade for 10-15 years 2005 for China. Barriers that never got dismantled and technology that leaked from the US 2005-2016 under the Obama administration. Smoot Hawley was not about the US Navy building its own ships and US shipyards in the 1920's. In 2025 US shipbuilding industry is stolen, this is why the words used "pillaged" "looted" were used in the Rose Garden. Little by little American private enterprise capitalism was superseded by a new form of capitalism in Japan then in China that combined state capitalism with private enterprise capitalism. This then was the threat America faced, and needed to redouble its energies and seek fair play.   ...

With the aggressive actions taken along the 1600 kilometre border in eastern Ladakh by China's People's Liberation Army, India needs a younger soldier to protect the border at high altitudes in below freezing temperatures. The entire 3500 kilometre border in the high Himalayan regions from east to west need technology driven surveillance with soldiers fit and ready for such duty. Agnipath's goal is to bring down the average age in the army from 32 years to 26 years to better reflect the youthful population in India. A tighter better disciplined force with high tech is needed. Bringing in more and new recruits is intended. Both the 25% of recruits retained after 4 years benefit and the 75% benefit. The 25% will have opportunities to move up the ranks. The 75% who come back out of the military will have the advanced technical training and courses, certification, that would make them attractive to the public and private sector companies in 2026 and beyond when India's economy will be 50% larger than today at growth rates of 10-12%. This is already seen in the way technologically trained military recruits from World War II in the US Army, Navy and Air Force were quickly absorbed at high salaries in the high growth period of America 1950-1970, with incentives like the GI Bill. Modifications that could be discussed- The 25% retained after 4 years. There is no magic number it could be raised to 30 or 40% during these post pandemic years and then lowered to 25% as the economy grows rapidly by 2025, or kept at 30% without changes, a number of options could be open.The financial aspect of the training can be modified where the 25% retained could have these 4 years added to their years for calculating pensions. The 75% are given 1.2 million rupees and even this can be adjusted upwards so that they could start businesses as entrepreneurs or have the time to pursue higher education before taking up for example with free education to enhance their education in areas of interest as was given by the GI bill to Americans in the armed services after World War II in 1946. Ideas from the GI Bill signed by president Franklin Roosvelt in 1944- Adding one year of unemployment payments, low interest loans to start a farm or business, full tution and living expenses for college. In 2008 the Veterans Act in the US continued support for education of servicement by making eduction free at a public college or university.  The Roosevelt GI bill benefited about 7.8 million servicemen in the US armed services. 2.2 million went to college, 7.6 million took training programs. It was an impressive achievement. No scheme is perfect there are budgetary constraints such as how to manage pensions to give the armed services the best possible funding including the training and course capabilities that also need good financing and the higher pensions for armed services. Every political party  government around the world without exception will have to face these budgetary constraints and the goal is to do right by the armed services providing the income and opportunities they deserve. Was a decent effort made with the right goals set? This is how these matters of national interest for India and the Free World that includes South East Asia, Africa and Latin America, should be discussed.    ...

The situation is analogous to the intraparty struggles that beset the Democratic party after the abrupt end after 1000 days of the John F. Kennedy presidency and administration. Since the 1920's and two periods of rising inequality accompanied by technological change from the 1870's that ended with the Great Depression, the US had experienced a great revival under Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman and Eisenhower. In 1960 a new future was articulated by Kennedy of the new world that lay ahead, one he had seen upfront in Asia before, during and after the war. How would we bring the post colonial world of billions of people into the modern world. Since then both a modern China and now modern India are part of this change. "Today our concern must be with that future. For the world is changing. The old era is ending. The old ways will not do." Acceptance speech for the Democratic nomination for President, July 15, 1960. It was interrupted after the intraparty disputes that began in 1968, Robert Kennedy challenging LBJ, leading to Richard Nixon, and Edward Kennedy challenging Jimmy Carter leading to Ronald Reagan. John F. Kennedy had articulated a vision that still is alive today based on an understanding of how America's needs fit into all humanity's needs.  In some ways the situation after 2024 or 2028 still goes back to the vision of a new order of the world with emerging nations in Asia with 3 billion people, and additional billions of people in Africa, Latin America. The Arms buildup promised by Reagan in 1980 has yielded little about 50 years later, not even the fall of the Berlin Wall which today has been replaced by another struggle in Eastern Europe in 2024. Truman tackled the Berlin Blockade,  Eisenhower had faced upto Soviet tanks in Budapest, Kennedy had faced the Berlin crisis in 1963 his ich bin ein Berliner (I am Berliner). What purpose would an orbital weapons program serve- and could the US ever be or even want to be  "only one superpower in a safe world," with an orbital weapons program as Reagan and Weinberger went out to do and failed completely. America faces a situation analogous to 1920's with increasing inequality and weakness in the social fabric, as a result of four decades of rising inequality accompanied by technological changes, and misguided Reagan programs that diverted from John Kennedy's vision that the "old era is ending, the old ways will not do."  The vision put forward by John F. Kennedy has more relevance today for the future. That vision he articulated in the First Inaugural Address in which he also said that this work may not be accomplished "in our lifetime on the planet." It is important to remember that John F. Kennedy connected his vision to FDR when he said in his State of the Union Address to Congress in Jan. 1961- In the name of a great President whose birthday we honor today, closing his final State of the Union Message sixteen years ago. "We pray that we may be worthy of the unlimited opportunities that God has given us." This is the vision that stands before America even today in 2024.   ...
